New signing

Says to me husband will be used more as the left centre back which I personally think he thrives in...

Mitchell and garbutt to fight out the LB role.

Garbutt and Mitchell tbf are an absolute coup for us. Very exciting times.

I'm amazed that he has remained at Everton until the age of 27 despite seeing virtually no first team football.
I thought it was a typo at first.

I'm not passing judgement on his ability, just very surprised because other than keepers it can't happen that often.

Looks like he could be used as the left side of a front three

Really good signing for us, turned down a contract with Ipswich according to their fans as well so just shows that we now have some pulling power. Like others have said, I think Husband will go into the left side CH position now, which personally I believe he is best at. Happy with this one.

Critch could push Mitchel forward on the LW, and put Garbutt at LB - ?

I think it will be Mitchell left back and Garbutt left mid...interchange and attack at pace...I think Kai Kai will have to shape up or he will be struggling to get in. The fact Garbutt can hit free kicks into the onion bag will be massive for us too...our set pieces have been woeful for ages.

Seems a strange signing to me this one.

It’s not as if we’re playing 442 with a recognised winger, with Husband and The emergence of Mitchell at left back you have to wonder where he’s going to slot in.

Perhaps left back is for Mitchell and Garbutt to fight over and Husband goes in at central defence as we’ve not been able to source the right centre back as of yet.

Although on a 12 month deal he could be a ‘dressing room’ player. Good to have some experience around the squad but will have limited playing time.

I had exactly the same thought. Probably aither a mixture of Premier League stockpiling at its most extreme, and being given a 5 year contract but not quite hitting the level of his previous potential.

Can't imagine a way back now then for Callum MacDonald if we have signed 2 quality left sided players in the position he plays in.

He was probably on a very nice secure contract at Everton so saw no reason to leave. It's not like he was rotting in the reserves, he has a fair amount of experience. Ipswich fans seemed to want to hold on to him.

Mitchell looks particularly good going forward, he has the looks of a player who was asked to adapt to defending at United but is really an attacking player? We definitely need a right sided player much more than the left - and a central defender. I guess they just saw an opportunity to get a quality player in and went for it? There are three slots down the left side of the team, maybe Garbutt and Mitchell are seen as capable of filling any of the three?

Garbutt scored 6 goals last season in 30 Ipswich appearances. Not bad if he is a defender.

Also, just a 12 month contract, no option mentioned. Seems unusual!

left centre back

There's certainly gonna be plenty of competition in certain positions. Whereas i see Nottingham and Ekpiteta improving, I'd still like another centre half. One who could go straight into the team..

i Voy, more reason why Shaw needs to go out on loan. 😄

Agree with this about kaikai. For me he has flattered to deceive and last season turned out to be a fans favourite mainly due to the dross around him. Looks good in flashes but needs to be in a position where he sees lots of the ball or enforce himself on the game more.

Out of the starting xi for me he is the weak link, and with this new lad and sarvic, who are critchley men, he needs to pull his socks up a bit.

Got this text from my Ipswich supporting mate:

"See you've got Garbutt. V. good player. Brilliant at set pieces...Depending on how you play he's a LB or LM. Better in a back 5 or midfield. We wanted to keep him, but couldn't afford him. V. good player at this level, surprised he didn't go to Championship."

Of course, I can still remember what Leeds fans said about Crainey so....

iVoy? Is that the new digital me? What platforms am I available on, anyone know? Can I be downloaded?

I think Shaw needs to go on loan, been obvious for weeks! 🤣

But he won't - cos Critchley wants to work with these players, I think. And he is versatile, and above all else, we have Covid - we could be hit by a spate of positive tests at any time. He's outside the 22 so he is a useful squad member.

Another attacking type of player who can play left back but also as a winger he doesn't do the defending types NC.

I know 20s is desperate to send Shaw to Outer Mongolia but I need to remind you again we need a back up "homegrown 'un" for Sims. Of course Antwi could fill role.

Shaw needs to get game time rather than be sat in the stands on matchdays. There's a lot of potential in him and sure I get the point about Critchleys coaching but it's an oft quoted thing about experience and the only way Shaw gets that is by playing games. And the only way he'll play games is by going out on loan.
Yep, Sims is perhaps the back up. I like Antwi too. Another one that impressed me in pre-season but the nearer to the start of the season, the less he was involved. He'd benefit from a loan too, I'd guess there's plenty of choice for simply providing a name for the bench.

I can't see us sending out any U21 players who are capable of doing a job in the first team, we need the depth due to Covid. They make the squad bigger than 22.

Don't forget, we have the most highly qualified coach on the planet running the team.
You would expect every player available to be improved under Critchley. If they don't, they will be moved on swiftly. And I think that's what will become more apparent at the weeks go by. Some players will be left behind, fall by the wayside. MacDonald, Hardie are the first of these. If they aren't buying into the theory and showing potential to improve within the framework, they're out. It's not quite coaching by numbers, but there's a ruthless analytical approach that doesn't leave room for sentiment.

Does anyone think this could pave the way to maybe playing 3 CH at the back. Husband playing on the left side of it. We would need another RB who loves to go forward, (which I think we will be getting regardless) but it opens up more options.

Isn't it just a pleasure to read about new signings. Just asked my Everton mate and he said ...

Was like the Leighton Baines 5 years ago but never got a game. Great going forward down the left and so you'll get good service for strikers, not the best defensively but good to watch.

I'm starting to wonder if Critch doesn't rate Hubby. In fact there don't seem to be many he rates from last seasons squad. Was it just 3 starters on Sat, Maxwell (and he probably relies on Banksy for that) Turts and Notts. Goal machine on the bench.

Think it's a valid observation. Apart from Maxwell I wouldn't be surprised if the team that finishes the season is made up of Critchley signings.

I think with Husband it's more a case of where his best position lies and how that works within the system NC wants to implement.

If - possibly lazy thinking but... - If you assume he'll adopt a Liverpool style system, then the full backs are a vital part of the attacking threat. They bomb forward and 2 of the 3 midfielders move side-to-side to cover them and support the centre backs defensively. Husband is not a bombing forward style left back. He's not got the searing pace or the delivery from crosses.
In the middle, he's too small and not quick enough to not be exposed in a pair, but he's well suited to playing on the left of a 3. If NC doesn't want to play a 3 then...

The same probably applies for Turton.

Don't forget Critchley knows Turton from when they were both at Crewe.

12 month contract, maybe just a bit of cover. Maybe Husbands Injury is worst than they thought.
