New vaccine.

Sounds great and a real step forward in getting life back to normal. Not too sure I’ll want to be at the front of the queue until any potential side effects are known tho, but I’m sure we have come a long way since the likes of thalidomide in new medicines.

Well, I wouldn't worry, it won't be available here until at least the middle of next year and I am sure there will be others before then. Of course if it was available today I would have it, why wouldn't you? I hope the Astra Zeneca and Oxford Uni one is close to being okay too as that one will be available here pretty much immediately.

You haven't half turned into a cranky, grumpy fucker Halifax!! Is it the strain of having a brother who looks like Bella Lugosi?? 😝

I’d want to see more information, but I’d expect that he risk is likely outweighed by the benefit. It seems daft to dismiss it though ?

Great news - a big step to getting out of this mess
Two more vaccine trials should also be reporting soon, Oxford and a US pharma one

It is unclear but from the limited information it sounds like it does provide immunity which would be massive,
BBC report talks about 'stopping people from getting it' - presumably people in the trial were regularily give CV tests and 90% of the group given the vaccine consistently have tested negative (or at least 90% of the expected number of exposed subjects). Trial is continuing.
Very limited information atm, looks like it has been rushed out so we can maybe expect other news about one of the other two vaccines very soon.

Trump won't be pleased.

He said a vaccine was imminent.

Now he'll argue it was a conspiracy by the media and the drug companies to suppress this information, and engineer his defeat.

Last week I was discussing the possibility of a vaccine with an orthopaedic surgeon. He said NHS staff, such as himself will be offered it but he will decline, he felt it had been rushed without the necessary testing. I was surprised at his stance.

What happened to the Chinese and Russian vaccines that were dished out in September? I assume there was no problem with them or we would have heard. Or then again maybe not.

90 % efficacy is pretty good for a new vaccine. OP probably confused between efficacy and safety (which there is no info on in the link).

For comparison measles vaccine is 97 % effective after 2 doses and 93 % after 1 dose.

There's a BBC report on how MI6 is working to prevent anti-vaxxers from clogging up the internet with fake news about the dangers of vaccines, mainly planted by foreign powers. Is Halifax a KGB operative?

Just started a thread on that Wiz.

I read that this morning. Surprisingly open account of what they are doing. Russia seeing the pandemic as an opportunity. Just wish they could behave a bit more normal & responsibly when we all need to be working together.

More trialists than an Oyston pre-season yet still only 90% effective?

I'll take a rain check 😎

There was a funny quote about them not intercepting the bat shit crazy posts by individuals on social media.

Obviously a fan of this board 😁👍

Nothing personal Lala, but I thought the default name for ignorance on Facebook was Karen 😉
Karen's are more the kind of person who likes to complain to anyone who will listen should their entitled way of life not be granted to them by everyone else.

Karen is one of your anti-mask, anti-vaccine, casually racist types. Can usually be heard aggressively saying ‘let me speak to your manager’ to staff on minimum wage.

Well i still havent had a flu shot this year as waiting for more to arrive as the uptake apparently is a lot higher than normal.
Vax Bandwagon jumpers will no doubt be an issue 😅

We may have a real chance of controlling this pandemic and people are saying no
Halifax is turning into something strange
Pro Farage and Trump ,herd immunity by letting it run free and now anti vax .
Suspect I will be one of the first up and have no issues
Has the cheese slid off your cracker

The company that invented this "Pfizer" vaccine is called Biontech. It's a German medical start-up founded by second-generation immigrant Turks. I assume Brexit means Boris won't do any deal for this vaccine because they need us more than we need them.

Everyone’s entitled to their choice. I just hope all those who choose not to take a vaccination choose to also fund their own treatment if they should get the virus. Can’t see why the rest of us should have our hospitals clogged up and lose access to treatment because of their decision.

I would be agreeable to this. Same principle applies if your nose drops off after the jab though.

40,000,000 doses already on order.

Yes, providing safety protocols have been met

Vaccinated herd immunity is the only long term solution, let us hope the immunity it offers lasts at least as long as the Flu jab (4-5 months?) and we can vaccinate 30 million people plus in a short time.

I've signed up for the NHS trial.
It's a no brainer.
Is that the one at Layton Medical Centre? I'm due to have mine on 22nd November. Somebody has to test these out. Otherwise there'll never be a vaccine that works. Personally, I'm grateful for the people involved in this Pfizer trial that's been announced today.
People like the o/p can feel assured that if enough other people take it, it'll help them keep safer too 🤪

Definitely not that one because I don't live in Blackpool.
Just completed a form on the NHS website. I've not been contacted yet.

Surely any side effects will have been identified in a extensive trials? Otherwise, they couldn't clear it for use or to identify those that may not be able to have one?
I will certainly be having one because being an above 60 male I am classified in one of the at risk groups and my wife is even more vulnerable having asthma. Also had my flu jab. Whilst it is everyone's individual choice I can't really understand why you would not have one. Even if you are not particularly vulnerable yourself you may pass it onto family or friends who are.
The pushback by some against the MMR based on tenuous rumours has lead to a rise in measles cases for the first time in decades. Can be a terrible disease that and the benefits of mass vaccination programes were wisely recognised by our earlier generations.
And one last point. Many people (including on here) have been moaning about the restrictions and impact of lockdown. If this is a route towards a return to normality then surely we should all be part of it?

It has been tested in 20,000+ people and is about to be tested (used) on millions more in phase 4 - which is general monitored use
The results are IMO a bit thin but statistically valid (only 94 infections in total, 80+ in the control group). As far as I can tell no definitive information on whether it confers immunity (sounds like it does). I hope that we will see more information as a result of the challenge testing that was reported to be taking place here in the UK. This is when volunteers are deliberately infected (or an infection is attempted) under various experimental conditions.

It has become part of the problem that some don`t seem to want to recognize genuinely good news...

Yep, good points.

One small point: whilst the prima facie evidence is very good indeed, the trials will have been conducted on mainly younger and fitter volunteers, and the results impacted as such.

Until the full data is released, we will not be sure of its efficacy rate for other subsets - such as older and more vulnerable people.

But it is important to recognize this for what it is, and it is very encouraging news.

Even those who are down a rabbit hole of Covid denial or are anti-vaxxers, should still welcome this breakthrough as ultimately it may provide us with a route out of this, and back to a semblance of normality.

So I will be certainly having it...

Anyone in denial of Covid shouldn’t be offered it plain and simple.

There will be several vaccines becoming available over the coming months not all will be successful
this one announced yesterday has still got hurdles to pass
