MOTM - Big Marv or Jerry boom-boom Yates ?

Our defence was very solid all game, particularly Thorniley and Big Marv. Big Marv was quick and imperious. We were more physical and Watfords forwards were not up to the physical confrontation. Connolly and Thompson were solid , physical and busy.

Our midfield looked much better when Bridcutt came on, he closed down their players and got tackles in. Charlie Patino's best game in Tangerine ? Wright was decent as well .Patino had a super first time shot.

Madine took his goal well, won lots of balls in the air and also had two good second half headers saved . Corbeanu runs well with the ball and had a few shots, perhaps a bit selfishly, but if you dont buy a ticket.......

Jerry Yates. Two great goals , one a really sweet strike and the second a typical Jerry baboozling dribble and clinical strike .Jerry Yates puts so much effort in to every game and spent much of the second half as a wing back protecting Connolly's right side , winning several defensive headers , If you havent watched the highlights, do !!

Im often critical of CJ's finishing but his run and cross for Jerry was the sort of supply that our forwards have been missing.

Watford dominated midfield in the first half and we looked lightweight in the centre. Bridcutt coming on gave us much more presence and solidity and released Patino to pass the ball forward , but I also liked how Patino and Bridcutt got forward in midfield to harrass and stop Watford getting forward. This made Watford go long and The Pool dealt easily with the long ball.

Against Watford, our team looked like they wanted points but more importantly were playing a formula that works in the Championship.

Thorniley was better than Marv. Although both very good, Thorniley had more 1v1 opportunities which he defended excellently.

It was the second or third time we’ve played without a true defensive midfielder and it’s never really worked yet?

Shows why even the top teams always have at least one holding midfielder.

Personally after Madine scored the opener I thought Watford dominated without threatening too much.
Then they scored that cracking free kick and I thought it was a matter of time before they got their 2nd.
Watford looked far more comfortable on the ball compared to Blackpool who looked like they couldn't trap a bag of cement at times but the defence held out against a poor attack, they were very like the seasiders this season where they built a good attack then nothing.
If Lavery for Theo baffled me then CJ on for Madine totally mashed my brain, however CJ's cross for Jerry's sublime finish was excellent but we have to remember, even a blind squirrel finds a nut every now and again!! It's something he has to repeat regularly. Bridcutt for Carey, imo, should have happened before half time.
A moral boosting win but still a few things to work on . Ball control needs to be better and if we're going to play the high press it needs to be done by more than just Gary Madine, onwards and upwards👍🏻

Interestingly, people are saying Bridcutt was often in an advanced role. This was only because his job was a successful man marking job on Louza. As Louza dropped deeper, Bridcutt could attack more.
We are always hung up about having a permanent CDM when a good man marker is more effective

First half Watford’s number 6 ran the show.
Bridcutt came on, kicked their number 6 straight away & he did hardly anything after that. Effective shit house football but what is needed sometimes.
Louza - probably our only really creative midfielder.

Has been injured for a while so that was his first start this season .

Everyone’s tactic should be to put pressure on us and target our defence.

I think they’d struggle against a lot of teams in the EFL tbh !

Also double mark Sarr and he is basically a passenger in a game .

Lots of outstanding individual perfomances. Personally up til Jerrys two goals I'd have given Madine motm as he possibly had his best game ever in a tangerine shirt. Chunky made a great point on another thread about their no 14 having the freedom of the park down that left side in the first half so credit to the manager for recognising it and doing something about it as well as making the change at half time too which shored up our central midfield. Marv and Thorniley again were excellent and Maxwell had very little to do throughout the game.

I wasn't positive before the game but boy, that was a really positive performance and now the players need to take the confidence gained from that into the next few games.

Good O/P.
The relentless press eventually ground Watford into submission and they couldn't handle the intensity of us chasing everything down in packs.
The substitutions though were inspired.
Once Bridcutt settled he was excellent and CJ looked like a player reborn.
Top marks to Jerry ..his two goals were nothing less than he's deserved after his recent performances.

That's what impressed me about Bridcutt, not just the way he helped neutralise their midfield straight away, well after his first misplaced pass and foul, but the calmness and experience, talking and organising.

It's exactly what you'd want and what we need.

It made a real difference.

CJ had the second most assists last season but unfair comparing him to a blind squirrel

A strong press will break almost every team in this division and i would say most PL teams. One of the big problems this season i think is that we have let teams play onto us. On saturday not long after the first goal we sat back and let them play onto us. There were times where we looked to be playing a 6-3-1 even in the second half with Jerry as an out and out right back, connolly was moving inside as an addition CH and Bridcutt was sitting alongside almost as a fourth. I recall a period where ten of Blackpool's players were playing in a band that had no more than 6 or 7 yards of depth across the pitch from about two yards inside our pen box.

it wasnt until Bridcutt started chasing their playmaker all over the pitch and forcing him deeper and deeper that we started playing more advanced, and pressing them in defence at which point we took control of the game. I really dont understand why we have been so passive in most of our games, because we have players who have high energy and can press for relatively long periods.

it was a stupendous performance from every pool player.

Marvin Ekpiteta was his usual class self but would have to give MOM to Jerry Yates. Took his goals well and never stopped running and tracking back. So many fine performances though , real quality in central midfield now and Madine was very decent. Walked away on saturday feeling very good.
