No way Richie Wellens would be accepted as manager....

....after saying we play in orange. Not once, but twice 😲

But actually, his memories of our two LDV Cup wins and that period make for a decent read.

And for those thinking it's a worthless competition, Wellens gives a player's point of view:-
"....we won the EFL Trophy twice, a lot of players will play for 10 or 15 years and never get that opportunity...."
“Once you’ve tasted that success and held silverware, any player would tell you that as soon as you finish the day, you’re thinking, ‘when can the next one come?’

They were 2 of my favourite of our very many wins at Wembley and Millennium Stadium. None of the pressure or consequences of losing which the playoffs have, just a good day out, fantastic if you win, ah well never mind if you lose.

Whether i'm quite in the Critchley out campaign yet, I'm not so sure but if Wellens was the right man for the job and he brought some sort of success then I'd not have a problem with him being our manager. The past is the past and tbh I never really got all this vitriol towards him.

I'll forgive him for that. Cracking player for us and others and I never got the pantomime villain thing some of the fans went for that bizarrely carried on long after the way he left. Probably just because most EFL fans don't recognise opposition players so when they do and know they're a threat then you can get that. But funny when some of ours wouldn't say boo to a goose when it came to Oyston yet would be heckling and jeering the likes of Richie or Billy Sharp or Brett Pitman at first sight.

Have to say I loved Richie as a player and love how he sets his teams up as a manager. I'm also grateful for him recommending Jerry and Keshi to us when he interviewed for a job 😜. If Critch was to go he would be the 1st on a very short list for me.

It's just because he was such a good player for us, David Eyres got the same.

To be fair, Eyres left us for Burnley who we'd developed quite a rivalry with which annoyed many. He also upset the melts because he celebrated a goal when he returned and scored against us. He then went to Preston

Wellens was driven out by Hendry. Loved him as a player and have no animosity towards him whatsoever.

Didn’t Hendry sell him after 5 minutes to replace him with that midfield powerhouse - John Doolan?
A bit longer than that. He made him turn up to the ground on match day, with no intention of playing him. He was head and shoulders above anyone else we had at the time. If needed a damning indictment of the managerial skills of Hendry.

Hendry and I were in the same quiz team at Bloomfield Road and I told him that in my opinion Welllens was our best midfielder since late 70’s. He said he didn’t see it. Highlight of night was Jamie Burns and Matt Blinkhorn giving their manager dogs abuse about the shirt he was wearing.

Ayers got abuse because rumour was he wanted to leave but Mullen couldn’t afford to sign him. So for last few months he never tried a tap and left on the cheap. Wellens got abuse for saying he was better than Blackpool. Still loved him.

Ayers never played for us. He played funk, soul and jazz. But is also a rock.

Why did Micky Mellon get such abuse? I was at Burnley away when he did 'that' celebration, which I found funny. I'd have done the same too if I was him.

At the time he was a lot better than Blackpool.

Totally agree 20’s. And that would be the same for any manager.
As we all know though as soon as it starts to go pear shaped then the usual suspects would be soon spouting about how they didn’t want them in the first place.
