Northampton Town v Blackpool Official Matchday Thread 01.05.21

It's pretty much done and dusted. Just a point from either Donny or Bristol Rovers. A quality quality season all round.

Who do we want in the play offs? Got to be one of whoever finishes 6th out of Pompey or Oxford (unlikely to be Charlton).
3rd plays 6th.
4th plays 5th
Think we may play Lincoln

How secure are the play-offs now? they may not be mathematically but without a capitulation we should be alright.

Teams that can catch us, and how they'd be able to do it:

Charlton are basically out of reach. They'd have to win both their remaining fixtures and we'd have to lose both of ours for them to match our points, on top of that we have a goal difference of 9 superior to theirs.

Oxford again can only match our points tally if we lose both our fixtures and they win theirs. Their goal difference is fairly close but even a point out of next two puts us mathematically out of reach.

It is basically secured lads and ladies, a point against Doncaster on Tuesday will put all doubt aside but even still we can relax (slightly).

That was as comfortable as they come. I thought it would be harder than it was. The Northampton subs seemed to weaken their team. Players returning from injury as well. Well done Pool.

Yates on the spot. Need to keep him and add a quality striking partner next season.
Backtracking after spending the first half of the season telling everybody how crap he is. Yet another one of your many outbursts that fell spectacularly on it's arse!

You are a very unpleasant person. Do you actually have any real life friends? I find it hard to imagine that there is another human being on this planet that would like you.

Anyway. I'm not wasting any more time on you. A great result and a professional, solid performance on a difficult pitch. Keep it going 'Pool. We're almost there 👍🏻

1 point from 6. If we mess that up, we don't deserve to be anywhere near the play offs. I happen to think we may end up 3rd.
Must press for 3rd by winning our last two games, no easing up. Hopefully we will then have an easier play off semi final. Don’t fancy Sunderland at all so let’s avoid them!
Wouldn’t mind Lincoln to be honest

No sympathy for Lincoln even though it wasn't a penalty. Appleton played the Covid card to rest his players and would you believe it, they've been on an unbeaten run since their two week rest. Fuck 'em !

You only have to look at this thread earlier and how he was pulling the team to shreds

No need to be nasty to the poor bloke, some people are not happy unless they have something to whinge and whine about. 😁

TP, allow me to cover your glass half full with my glass half empty.
A point on Tuesday or Saturday and we're in the play-offs. The fat lady is gargling but she ain't standing at the mic.

Lose on Tuesday the pressure would be really on come Saturday against horrible Joe’s Barton’s lot. Let’s sort it Tuesday.

I don't tend to read this thread too much in game. Clearly some posters aren't watching judging by the number of times they post.
It's always amusing though to read post match particularly the posts before we got the second goal to hear the opinion of some how poor we are.

Yeah that's what worries me. I hope we can sort it on Tuesday and then rest our key players for the last game.

As for the PBoro penalty, worst decision I've ever seen. Absolute shocker.

Fergie time/decisions passed to his ugly son.

Wouldn’t say we were brilliant at all but very professional in getting the 3 points which was all that mattered, onwards and upwards
UTP

They will have to attack us and that is what we want.
They are not in the relegation zone by being fired up for games, so I'm going for a 3-0 win today, maybe more if we can upset them early.
Well it was nice to be spot on today. Could've been 4 or 5 easily as they were wimps and threw in the towel far too easily.

Im the exact opposite. Don’t mind any of them bar Lincoln

Another excellent three points on the road, and I didn't feel the result was in any doubt after the first goal. We had 16 shots, with 10 on target which is pretty good for an away side. That said, I thought Northampton were dreadful for a side that needed to win to stay up. Talk about going down with a whimper. Anyway, you can only beat what's in front of you, and we've followed up a wobble - that could easily have turned in to a catastrophe - with two massive away wins. They have some guts and determination this team, there's no doubt about it.

It was good to see Yates get back on the scoresheet to give his confidence a boost at the right time, and the fact we were so comfortable without Kaikai and Ward was good to see. Not to mention Ekpiteta and Anderson returning. Gutted for Robson but hopefully not too serious. We're finally getting some real options on the bench at just the right time.

I actually think the Oxford and Portsmouth results aren't necessarily a bad thing, because imo it will mean there will be no let up from us in these last two games, and we can get some momentum going. When we played Forest in the playoffs in 2010, I think part of their problem was they'd lost momentum precisely because they were comfortably in the playoffs and started pissing around with their team, losing along the way. We will need to play a strong side against Donny, and possibly only get to rest players against Bristol - but they're the worst team in the league and we might be able to rest players and still win to get another run going.

Either way, 74 points with two to play is way beyond my expectations after the first few games. I really hope fans can get to show their appreciation before the season is over.

As an aside, we now have the joint best defensive record in the league alongside Hull, as others have already said. 37 conceded in 44 games, with the third best on 41 conceded. That takes some doing considering how many different centre half combinations we've had this season, and massive credit must go to Ballard, Ekpiteta, Gretarsson, Thorniley, Husband and Turton who have all played there, for being able to slot in effortlessly when required. We do have some very adaptable defenders at the club, who have been absolutely key to our success this season.
