Not enough quality up front for promotion

Agree, we do need at least one more.

Good thing is there is over 1 month to get that sorted so not in panic mode yet.

Last time in league 1 we had Yates, Madine, Simms & Lavery ( lethal at best ) hope I’m wrong tho 🤞🍊
Madine was frequently called shite by some, while Simms played less than half the season and took some time to really get going.

We only remember the highlights of each player.

We do still need another, but maybe a loanee of the ilk of Simms might be the answer rather than a permanent.

Also Yates took 10/11 games to score a goal didn’t he?

I think we’re in a good place. We still likely have Madine for the second half of the season and I’d be surprised if we don’t bring in another forward before August 5th

Lavery, Joseph and Beesley will all likely get 10-15 goals each.

What we need is another 20-30 from midfield / out wide.

We didn’t have Simms neither until second half of season.

We have until August 31st in this transfer window.
Loans will be key issue for a striker or winger.

Think losing Yates and Madine gives opportunities to others and they may well yet step up to the plate. Leave a squad place open to last day when some players are desperate to get fixed up and see who is available.
Happy to start season with the squad as it stands

There are 2 weeks to go and as yet we have not seen Joseph or Kouassi. I'm sure we have a few targets in talks and possibly waiting on a loan or 2 also. Keep the faith, we are in for a good season.

I also remember Simms getting pelters for his first 4 or 5 games. He was called lazy, cumbersome, a downgrade on big Gaz.

He only really kicked in right at the end of his spell and of course those two semi finals where he monstered them.

Lavery can certainly score 15/20 goals in league one.sure he scored something like 10 in his first season in the championship.
Joseph can score all types of goals head/left foot right foot and I’d like to think he could score a similar amount.
can see Carey hitting double figures this season also.
I’d like to see another striker come in though whether that be loan or permanent.

We are playing a different style of football this season from what I saw yesterday. The type of football which doesn't solely rely on big forwards . It's also the type that ripped us apart on many occasions, last season possession based and quick decisive finishing . It will help us consolidate when we get there again.

Heard from a mate who is a well informed Rovers supporter that we are still keen on Jack Vale on loan if he recovers from his hamstring injury in time. This does imply at least one incoming forward is likely whether it is Vale or another.

Beesley is nowhere near good enough.

Lavery is first choice with possibly Joseph, if they can find him??

I’d say we need 2 more forwards

If we are only playing one forward with a tricky 10 behind him then that means currently it is a requirement for one striker.

So we have 3 currently for one position. They’ll add one more for plan B of 2 up front.

He was definitely rubbish at first. We had to learn to play to his strengths and he had a lot to learn to.

Think we need both a perm and loanee. As it stands an injury in that department will probably cost points.

Watch Lavery yesterday at Barrow the lad is going to tear a good one in this league certain starter.
I rarely take anything from pre-season, but hearing The Wasp is fully fit and still retains that goalscoring instinct is fantastic news.

I have great hopes for him this season. Then again, had we stayed up I'd say the same.

I just hope he holds back on the rash challenges- no red cards and no self inflicted injury.

On what basis is he nowhere near good enough? What qualifies you to make that judgement? Critchley and the coaches and the recruitment team brought him to the club for Championship football and in the few Championship games he played he managed a few goals. We’re now in League 1 with the same manager that deemed him good enough for football in the League above so surely the logic suggests he’s good enough enough for this level at least.

I think we have a strong squad of players, and if there's a better squad in L1, I'd love to know who has that squad. We do need a striker though - not to replace Yates, as I think Joseph fills that role, but to replace Madine. Loan or permanent would suffice for me provided that the player has the necessary qualities, in terms of holding the ball up, being good in the air, and having a high nuisance value generally. That will enable us to adapt starting line-ups, formations etc as required - and it WILL be required at some point.

Having seen the video of the Barrow match, it looks a concern, even if we scored 5. Carey, Norburn and Trybull v good, defense should be solid too. First game , Dale forward with Lavery. Second was Apter forward with Beesley. Beesley looks too slow to me, Apter or Dale not very convincing. Joseph to come but there is a risk of not enough penetration and goals without a couple of forwards with talent/goals.

League Goals that season:

Yates 20
Simms 8
Kaikai 7
Hamilton 5
Madine 4

So Lavery hadn't arrived, Simms only came halfway through and our other striker was Joe Nuttall 🤣
So yes Yates bagged 20 but look at the goal distribution yesterday - Virtue with one and Carey with two - the season we went up from the Championship Charlie was our top scorer. Problem last season was not much came from midfield or defence and that's where we need an improvement,
I think Lavery can get to double figures and Beesley and Joseph should be up there .. but I'd agree we need another one in but I do like the idea of goals coming from all areas of the pitch as last season Jerry was a marked man in too many games as he was our only goal threat.

Go on I will bite..I think we are still 4-5 quality players short and whilst we have a decent first 11 we haven’t got sufficient strength in depth…off the top of my head Derby will have a much stronger squad than we have but there are others aswell…I hope we still strengthen but fear we wont

Promoted sides almost always score plenty of goals. I too think we lack sufficient quality up front. And also some experience there. Also think we are short of a left sided centre back

Wow I just saw that.

I’ve just gone £10 E/w. So if in the top 4 goalscorers I’m well in.

Joseph is the same odds but we’ve not seen him yet.

If Shayne stays fit, we know Critch likes his play from first time around in the Championship
A mate and myself had a lump on CJ at the Swindon Covid game when he got his 2nd then he just turned into a lump.....

Early season enthusiasm ehh🤷‍♀️🤦‍♂️

I also think there are a couple of pieces missing from the jigsaw, but until he brings his best 11 together never mind 18 time
will tell. At this moment a experienced front man and the left sided C/B other people are asking for seems to be what is
required. Is Critchley waiting on the progress of 2/3 players in this squad to see how far they can go. The next 2 games
will no doubt show us more. Another Pennington for the left side would be a great addition if Tharme or Casey are not to
be successful. Oakley-Boothe shows in his video he can handle the ball, if the coach can get inside his head and effect
his game he could be a good player.
