Nottingham Forest v Blackpool Official Matchday Thread 07.01.23

Connelly was our big weak link at the back today, so I'd start Ekpiteta instead. Dougall for Norburn as well as I thought Norburn was missing for alot of the game. Otherwise just go for it again. As for fitness, there's a definite gap.
Connolly will make mistakes, but would Eki have made more?
Whether right or wrong Critchley trusts Connolly more than Eki.
To be honest I would like a new CB, Eki may be leaving he is not likely to improve at his age, and Connolly should be named on the bench, he is good cover and allows greater flexibility on substitutes who are named.

Depends on how many they show.

I agree Bolton, Bristol look likely and throw in the token 'magic of the cup' with Eastleigh and you have 3. 4th would be us, possibly 3rd.
And if Arsenal/Liverpool draw then that's an absolute banker of a telly match as a match between 2 premier teams is a given 🤷☹️

Yes we should just stand anywhere and hoof it in?
I can guarantee we've scored more goals from taking a corner/free kick traditionally (whipping the ball in), than playing it short and trying some training ground nonsense.

That free kick we tried was shite when it was in a brilliant position to whip a cross in, instead played it short then Norburn took 10 minutes to decide what to do, by that point the opportunity was wasted.

And has less time to get sent off !!

the bit with two balls on the pitch was odd. Should be stopped immediately. In fact did the game carry on with the ball that wasn't the primary ball ?
Yes it was very strange that the game wasn’t stopped. I think Connelly kicked the extra one towards where the play was and I couldn’t work out if the correct ball was being used.

Ridiculous that the referee carried on that bit of play, especially in an attacking area of the pitch so close to the end of the game.

We look far better with Lyons and Gabriel out wide. Both comfortably championship players imo.

Our main problem I think is that when Dougall doesn't play, we have absolutely zero aggression in the middle of the park, and not a great deal of strength either. Someone to really get in the faces of the opposition midfield. Even today, their midfielders were never put under much pressure.

If I was to say what one player we need to sign this January, it would be a hard nosed, aggressive midfielder.
CB with pace maybe? When we play Connolly, Husband and Pennington we have very little pace and we have played that combination a fair bit.

Casey is a bit better and Marv too, although he has his flaws.

I’d have taken this 2.5 hours ago. Great result away to a team that recently put Utd and Newcastle to the sword. Was always going to be tough. Dont get the slagging off of some of the players. No need for it today. For a league one team (as that’s what we are) that was a fantastic result. Roll on the replay
Totally agree and I can't believe the slagging off of our players on here. Moan moan moan. Every player was a credit to our club today and credit to Critchley for setting out the team to stifle Forest but still enabled us to get forward and score two good goals.

Forest had a warm weather training camp planned which they will have to cancel or modify now. All this talk about giving Forest the East Stand how about the people of Blackpool coming out and selling out the ground. I get sick of supposed fans coming on here and telling Sadler how to spend his money but don't want to put their hands in their pocket to support the team.

Forest are a miles bigger club than Luton so we should be second choice imo. Bigger scalp

Not sure the replay will interfere with their getaway. It could be the week after. After all the FA wouldn't want to upset the poor little mites.

Yeah good shout. Casey's good, but he is very slow too.

In a strange way I would have like to have seen how VAR would have played out if Forest had scored. Surely the ref had to stop the game but he gave virtually every decision to Forest so wasn't surprised he let them play on.

Every single player deserves credit for their performances and the manager. I was cautious when 2-0 but to come away with a result is a huge positive to the players which will breed confidence.

Hopefully we can sort our away form against far weaker opposition and make the playoffs. UTP 👏.

Disagree strongly with that

First half especially he got into space behind and there was nobody in the middle to cross the ball to.

I also worried a bit at the end when Critchley subbed him for Dale because he was the only outlet we had from all the pressure at the end.

He got into space well today I thought
Interesting response that’s the good thing about having different opinions just goes to show how us fans see things differently. I thought Connolly had a decent game but others didn’t. One thing l think we can all agree on is that that was a much better performance playing 4 at the back!

Was listening to 5 Live.

Critchley was happy in the interview.

He also hoped we'd be on TV.

I don't want it; we lose far too to often.

Yes, the problem is we signed Norburn to be captain and main man in midfield, but his play so far has not been up to it. They way he started out for us I really thought we had the right man, now I'm not so sure at all.
i think Norburn had a couple of games at the beginning of the season where he looked ok, then there was his absolute shocker at lincoln where Marv took a lot of stick, and i dont think hes had a good game or even an average one since then.

That'll be the same plodder that notched a hat trick against the multi million pound defence of Newcastle.
He's become more effective lately it seems, but I still say he's pretty slow. As is our back three without Marv's recovery tackles. All that said I thought we held out well in the latter stages of the second half. When we get stretched out we are very vulnerable though, even against division 1 teams.

Right. I was at a 60th birthday dinner today so I couldn't watch. Still, I followed live updates on the BBC and have read through this thread since then. So far I understand that CJ, who provided the assist for the second goal, was shit. Norburn was utter shit. Connolly was more shit than a very shit thing. It was not Dembele's day. Our second half performance was shit. Forest scored a worldy. Virtue was good for 10 mins. Rhodes? Barely mentioned so must have been shit.
And yet, we drew 2-2 away against a Prem team. I'd hate to think what a real-life AVFTT commentary team would sound like.

I’m sure Kouassi could play that role, when he’s back fit again. Certainly the best we have at winning headers. And he’s a unit.

Yes, I like him think he'll be a decent player for us, and offers something different to our other forwards. We do need some strength in the final third as Rhodes, CJ and the like are physically quite weak and easily brushed off the ball at times.

Tbf fans are coming out in the league considering we're in League 1, the price/affordability right now and the form we've been in.

This replay isn't a glamour tie and wont appeal much to any casuals, for me it needs to be priced cheap if we're to fill it, as it's an unexpected bonus game anyway. We also played them last season. It'll be on a weeknight so I doubt loads of exiles will travel.

It might help of there's a decent draw to look forward to.

Can't fault the players. Lacked quality in the end which is expected. The negatives are obviously the defence. Once again all over the place at times and you can't say because it's Premier League opposition as it happens every away match.
For chrissakes were you actually at the game. We were playing premier team full of internationals. Couldn't keep the ball at times but defence was immense. Kept their shape, won most of their challenges, defence set pieces well, no mistakes and took 2 well constructed goals to beat them. Dare I say 5-2-3 worked well and team well set up by Critch.
