O/T Global warming!!

I can remember in the early seventies, some of the the top boffins in the country had worked out all the science, crunched the numbers and had come to the indisputable fact that we were heading for a new ice age, especially after the unusually harsh winters in North America during 1972-73., and it would happen in the late twenty and early twenty first centuries here was no doubt about the scientific data, and it was even stated that we would all have to move south, as the northern hemisphere would be so cold that it would be uninhabitlable, and that we as a nation should be looking after the poorer nations south of the UK, so that they would welcome us in, when the time came for us to move there
 
Imagine an Olympic sized swimming pool ( which contains 550,000 gallons of water) as The Atmoshere. CO2 in the atmosphere is 0.04% (220 gallons) and the UK contributes 1% of the global CO2 (2.2 gallons). So if you get a plastic bucket from B&Q (3 gallons), take a bucket of water out of the pool, that is us reaching net zero. Anyone notice the difference in the pool, with our contribution deducted. No.

Unfortunately, people have short memories and fall for the new panic every time.
 
As my work is heavily involved in the energy transition, I hear the arguments for and against every day. I totally agree that our impact is small compared to India, China etc. but I do believe that we should take the moral lead. Also, being the leader should have a positive impact on the developing industry in this country.

Oh, and as a pedant, the current 'weather' is not down to global warming but the climate (and frequency of such events) is.
 
34 degrees in the shade currently in my garden in Old Trafford.

Local warming. I can feel the jet stream on my skin. 👍

Do you mean the countries who make the goods that we create the demand for. Just because we don’t produce the goods here doesn’t mean we’re not responsible.
 
As usual there’s no mileage in this thread, only disputes.
 
China are doing well actually if you consider emissions per head of population. China has massively reduced Co2 emissions and energy consumption over a relatively sort period of time and continues to meet externally set targets though remains the largest polluter.

OK but on a realistic level, my step-grandson's 4 months old. I hate to think what the world's going to be like when he's my age.

It’ll be fine, don’t worry, the media is as usual going way over the top and cant wait until the record temperature is beaten. Let’s face it, that was three years ago and we’re having a couple of days of hot weather, that’s all.
 
Is it time to revisit my Iron Overlord directive???

All women are allowed only 2 children.
They get to choose their partners not the choice of men.
If one child dies prematurely they can then have a second child again.

As some women won’t have children and some can’t it’ll reduce population and strain on planet resources. Plus it’s nicely in the hands of the matriarch so it’ll work a treat 👍

Total hysteria by the media and the nanny state, forecasts of thousands dying, including fit and healthy people. Well yes, some fit and healthy people have died by tragically and stupidly jumping into canals and quarry’s, but we haven’t been told of multiple deaths. Just heard some young researcher on sky news saying that by 2050 we will have sum temperatures of 35 degrees every year and that between 5000, and 7000 people will die every year as a result.

two days of hot weather ffs, wait until six months of winter with freezing cold and lashing rain.

Can you remember the last time we had a cold winter, five years ago?
 
Always feel like the emphasis is put on the people but realistically when heinze (just one example) are continuing to ** out millions of single use plastic bottles then what small difference are my/our own efforts going to make? Needs to be a nationwide (worldwide really but thats more difficult) collective enforced by government and law to have any kind of significant change. Needs to target all areas not just the common people as our input to climate change matters little in comparison to industrialised production/big coorperations etc.

Unfortunately Pool, the world wont end but it will rid itself of the human race, survive and prosper.
We have been warned periodically of this but have just produced more pollution, plastics, people etc. each decade.
Mentally and politically we can not change as a species and as Darwin states those that can not adapt become extinct.

The impact of your, mine and all other individuals' efforts is not the volumetric impact on global warming. Rather, it is the moral impact and a visible sign to the industrial polluters that the citizens don't approve of their actions. That does have an impact.
 
Too many people on this planet simples and still growing they all need food,homes to live in energy, transport to get to work clothes to wear etc.

Until you sort that problem out your pissing in the wind the world will continue to consume.

Also we need to stop buying crap so instead of having a draw full of £5 t-shirts have a couple of well made ones instead.

What a load of shite. I and many others have been giving a shit for years and still they don't give a fuck. Ridiculous comment. Until they change the world will not and the impact of global warming will be the end of us. Expecting huge cooperations to have morals because a few bottom feeders like me and you do, laughable really.

Thank you for your courteous reply. Since global warming first came to everyone's notice and the public began to favour carbon-saving policies we have seen the election of Britain's first Green MP and councillors. Domestic waste has begun to be seperated into marked bins. There has been a growth in green energy initiatives, both domestically and commercially.The large oil companies have been falling over each other to publicise their green credentials. Governments have legislated to remove diesel-fuelled cars from the road. Commercial aircraft manufacturers have brought more carbon-efficient engines to the market. Energy-efficient lightbulbs are now a significant part of the lighting industry - again, domestically and commercially.

In addition to these few things I have quickly reeled off, there are far more initiatives cropping up all the time. Yes, some of them will be more PR than reality but my point stands. Businesses and Governments make these changes because there is a public that sees the importance of making these changes. Your scornful words are empty of meaning.
