O/T Kieran Trippier ban

Reading about this today, it appears that his 2 month ban relates to him allegedly tipping off someone that he was going to move to Atletico Madrid. Or someone finding out what was going on somehow.

What a effing joke. The whole betting industry runs on the basis of the bookie having superior knowledge to the punter. When it’s that way round, everything is fine, but when the bookie gets a tiny bit stung they shout unfair.

Nobody forces bookies to offer odds on players moving, new managerial appointments etc etc. Yet they and the FA get precious about what happens when they do. Also handy that the player is now based overseas so the Premier League “ brand” is not harmed. If my memory is right Daniel Sturridge was also playing abroad in Turkey when he was banned for a similar offence.

The FA should concentrate their resources on betting related to football games. Thats an issue that cuts to the integrity of the game, not who moves where or who moves to manage who.

My mate was in the bookies watching idly as they started running on Santiago, Chile. Twenty minutes later they were still taking bets on the race. Was it out of order to have £50 on the winner? £600 profit. He didn't put more on in case it drew attention.

Good post and something to think about but gambling is all over football and even the predominant broadcaster eg Sky has its own company.
There needs to be a serious approach to gambling by not just football but by society, where there has been great success with smoking and drinking regarding sports advertising.
Taking it up with very soft targets isn't proactive and just makes some sort of artificial statement in that respect

Well by the rules he's pretty damn guilty. Apparently telling his mates to "lump on" his move to AM.

The betting markets are mad. You can bet on ** anything. The version I heard is a bit different, that simply he broke a technicality by talking about his move and his mate lumped money on.

Whatever way it works, why the fuck you can place a bet on a transfer is bizarre. It's so open to abuse it's ridiculous. I don't get why it's a valid market for a bet. It's not assessing the sporting prowess of anything.

Can I go to the bookies and bet what's in the middle aisle in Aldi next week? It's just about the same thing surely.

Betting is out of control. Football is carrying on partly because if it doesn't, the data industry (oh, think of the XG stats people!) and consequently the gambling industry will be in a big hole. They pump money into football and therefore it's a circle that reinforces the mutual dependence.

Whether Trippier told his mate or not doesn't seem to be the main story about gambling and football atm to me. I also think it's absurd to ban a young lad from talking about how he might be moving to a foreign country. Surely he must tell people, surely he discussed that with someone? What if he tells his wife, she tells her mate, her mate tells her husband who mentions it in the pub?

It's the same as who is going to be the next manager of a club. A lot of people will be privy to that information.
