I bet Stan never wore those boots that he promoted and advertised either, they weremade from very hard leather with no give and they played havoc with your ankles even if you wore two pairs of socks.Never smoked in his life, of course.
We were all fooled, Stan must have smoked 50 fags a day, look at the colour of his fingers where he is holding the cigarette!! If Stan hadn’t smoked he would probably still be playing today!!Never smoked in his life, of course.
I read his autobiography. He had boots specially made for him and they were that soft and pliable he said he could fold them in half and put them in his coat pocket.I bet Stan never wore those boots that he promoted and advertised either, they weremade from very hard leather with no give and they played havoc with your ankles even if you wore two pairs of socks.
Yes that is true but the typical man on the street and young kids from working class families could never afford the boots that Stan wore. I have read lots of books about Stan Matthews and he apparently never smoked apart from the last 20 minutes of the 1953 FA Cup final when he was on fire.I read his autobiography. He had boots specially made for him and they were that soft and pliable he said he could fold them in half and put them in his coat pocket.
I had a couple of pairs of Stan's boots that my dad got me and they really were soft, I was too young to appreciate their value [historically not justI read his autobiography. Where did they get that disgusting racing green paint from?,seemed to be at a few grounds in the 70s.
Blackpool Tram sheds I would guess .Where did they get that disgusting racing green paint from?,seemed to be at a few grounds in the 70s.
I actually remember that page. Bloody hell!
We have one more Ballon D'Or than Man City for all their recent success.

Would love to know what was wrong with Harry Thomson in the second half of that Div 1 home game against Chelsea in Oct 1970. Blackpool were winning 3-0 at half time and ended up losing 4-3. Thomson was rooted to his goal line in the second half and didn’t come for crosses and seemed to struggle to catch and hold the ball.
The team imploded in the second half, I just don't think they believed they could beat Chelsea even with a 3-0 lead. I don't think you can blame Harry For Scotland for Dave Hatton's sliced own goal from 10 yards for Chelsea's winner.Would love to know what was wrong with Harry Thomson in the second half of that Div 1 home game against Chelsea in Oct 1970. And one more member of an England World Cup winning side.We have one more Ballon D'Or than Man City for all their recent success.
I remember this game Ike it was yesterday, Harry Thomson never left his goal line for the whole of the 2nd half. Pressure was building and Chelsea were putting lots of balls into the box and our defence was having to play very deep so Hutton’s sliced own goal didn’t surprise meThe team imploded in the second half, I just don't think they believed they could beat Chelsea even with a 3-0 lead. Yes and surprisingly both our Balon D’OR and World Cup winner still don‘t have statues at Bloomfield Road. And one more member of an England World Cup winning side.
If you have £100-£150,000 to spare crack on!Yes and surprisingly both our Balon D’OR and World Cup winner still don‘t have statues at Bloomfield Road.
Peanuts when we paid around £500K for Dale and even more for Lubala and Nuttall, none of whom will ever become Pool Legends. I also heard Simon Sadler paid £250,000 for Matthews 1953 FA Cup medal, you could get 2 fantastic statues for £250,000, all depends on your priorities. Blackpool are one of only 8 teams who had an England player who won the World Cup in 1966, every other player has a statue but not Alan Ball. Stan Matthews has a fantastic statue at Stoke City but Stan’s achievements at Stoke do not bear comparison with his achievements at Blackpool. Alan Ball’s last competitive appearance as a Blackpool player was in a World Cup final, that fact alone is worth a statue. If you have £100-£150,000 to spare crack on!
Breaking News this weekend. The Fylde Coast now does have a Ball statue, comedian Bobby Ball’s statue was revealed in Lowther Gardens, Lytham yesterday. If you have £100-£150,000 to spare crack on!

14 different Clubs supplied the 22 players for England’s 1966 World Cup squad, 2 Clubs supplied two players each — Blackpool & Leeds Utd and 3 Clubs supplied three players each — Man Utd, Liverpool & West Ham. Blackpool were in great company back in 1966. Alan Ball is still the last Blackpool player to play for England and that was in a World Cup final. Two members of an England World Cup winning squad
Thomson was a good shot stopper but not good on crosses. Leeds away that season was a game I remember when he dropped a cross that he should have taken comfortably and Leeds scored to go ahead. We used several keepers that season as Thomson was dropped. Ramsbottom,Blacklaw,Burridge,Taylor if my memory serves me right.Would love to know what was wrong with Harry Thomson in the second half of that Div 1 home game against Chelsea in Oct 1970. Some people might not, nothing wrong with sharing.Do you think we don't know all this?
Blackpool Manager Les Shannon resigned after that Chelsea result and soon afterwards Bob Stokoe became Manager, Harry Thomson had been disciplined by Blackpool, don‘t know the reason why, but he missed half a dozen League games, Stokoe picked Thomson for 3 games and then terminated his contract in Feb 1971.Thomson was a good shot stopper but not good on crosses. Alan Ball's last competitive game for Blackpool was at Brentford in 1981, a 2-0 defeat, not the 1966 Cup FinalPeanuts when we paid around £500K for Dale and even more for Lubala and Nuttall, none of whom will ever become Pool Legends. Perhaps he should have said that a Blackpool player's last competitive game for England was in the World Cup Final.Alan Ball's last competitive game for Blackpool was at Brentford in 1981, a 2-0 defeat, not the 1966 Cup Final
Yes you are correct, however I don’t count Alan Ball’s Blackpool appearances playing in the third tier of English football in the 1980s, he was in his mid 30s by then and had not played for England for 5 years and was very close to retirement. The Alan Ball I prefer to remember played for Blackpool from the aged of 17 to 21, arguably was MOM for England in the 1966 World Cup final and was sold to Everton for a record transfer fee in Aug 1966. Alan Ball became one of the outstanding midfield players in the 1960s & 1970s and I am very proud he was discovered and developed by Blackpool FC.Alan Ball's last competitive game for Blackpool was at Brentford in 1981, a 2-0 defeat, not the 1966 Cup Final
I still say Alan Ball’s last competitive appearance as a Blackpool player was in the 1966 World Cup final, did you ever see Alan Ball playing for Blackpool in the 3rd tier of English football in the early 1980s, he may have been competitive but the team definitely weren’t?Perhaps he should have said that a Blackpool player's last competitive game for England was in the World Cup Final.
Yes I did. From very high expectation to huge disappointment.I still say Alan Ball’s last competitive appearance as a Blackpool player was in the 1966 World Cup final, did you ever see Alan Ball playing for Blackpool in the 3rd tier of English football in the early 1980s, he may have been competitive but the team definitely weren’t?
Did she play for the reserves?Violet Carson looked very happy at her home in her garden in Blackpool in the 60s.

As a young lad, standing on the South - and with the writing on top of the corrugated roof of the West being at an angle - I used to wonder what Cod refreshing flavour meant.
Think that's Blackpool South.
