On one of the VHS highlights videos, the camera is following the play right to left....Briggsy appears for a split second on screen and takes out one of the forwards, full body smash. I'm surprised the poor sod didn't end up in hospital. He didn't see him coming and it was like being hit by a train.
I remember this game well, mainly due to the fact that hardly any bugger who lived in Wigan seemed to know that a football team existed outside of Wigan RLFC Central Park.I have fond memories of a game at Wigan in 1985, where we drew 1-1 thanks to a brilliant Eamonn O'Keefe goal. He ran from the halfway line and beat Tunks in style to send the Tangerine Army (seen in the top left pic) wild in the autumn sun. Colin Greenall, Nicky Law, Mike Conroy and Steve Hetzke are also some of the players on these pics; not forgotten.
Maybe a lack of squad depth was to blame?. The forward line of Madden,Walwyn,Cunningham and Taylor for our 87/88 Centenary season should definitely done better than mid table. The 1986-87 team should've done better; on its day, it was unstoppable. We hit Swindon, Bristol Rovers and Port Vale for six; these 2 images are of our veteran defenders at Vale Park in what was a weird game. We might have been behind after they initially dominated but then we ran riot in the second half.
Here we see The Ginger Pele, Mike Davies, steaming in to a challenge with Skully Methven in the background. I shall never forget Ozzy raging at Davies for not playing in Paul Stewart for what would have been a seventh...
