Has been cancelled for a couple of stupid tweets he made when he was 18. Unbelievable 🤦🏻‍♂️ When will this madness end.

Scara,

I can understand the point that comments made several years ago - especially when the person is effectively a child - are out of context and not representative of the person today.

On the other hand, they was a clear racial tone to the tweets and once they emerged, the ECB had little choice but to punish once they were in the open. They couldn’t do nothing.

Ultimately, this goes away if he never made the tweets in the first place.

He hasn't been 'cancelled' though. He might have to serve a punishment of missing a test, it won't do him any harm in the long run, but are you suggesting this should just be ignored by the ECB when they're trying to make the sport more inclusive?

He was a silly boy in his youth - many of us were - but in this day and age the ECB have to be seen to act and rightly so. Robinson has done the right thing and apologised unreservedly and will receive a small punishment then it will be forgotten.

Very little to see here...

He wasn't a silly boy in his youth, he tweeted this stuff when he was 18. I sure as hell knew what I was saying at 18. He even used the hashtag #racist so knew what he was doing.

They aren't the worst racist tweets in the world, not an excuse, and I doubt he had an audience or a platform for it. YHe should be fined, made to attend some anti discrimination courses and then we move on. We can't cancel someones career because of stuff they said 10 years ago.

his mate says he’s not racist, don’t we think it’s time to stop it now. I take it of course everyone on this board has lived perfect lives and never said something silly or spoken out of touch at some point. Can you imagine doing well in your job only for some woke news hound to dig out one of your old school books to get you put out of work. It’s absurd and it’s just going too far.

It's harsh. I don't disagree. But there's an obvious difference between a professional sportsman and me or you.

I was hoping the UK was going to bypass the rest of this bloody Yankee influenced crap. Stand by for more to come.

You really could make all this nonsense up.

I do think/hope everybody will come to their senses at some point and we will move back to normality and I just hope that it's not too late before we do so.

Can someone explain how he has been cancelled?
He is still playing in the test match and was able to speak to the media extensively yesterday to explain himself, the very opposite of what I understand to being cancelled.
You do have to wonder about the person who leaked this information on the morning of his test debut, they must be very spiteful. Everyone does stupid things when they are young and he seems to have matured since then. As stated above, it will all be forgotten about in a few months time.

Exactly Scara.

Nobody would have a job if employers could look back at the actions of their employees over their whole lives.

A good point re the ECB Spud.

If they were to completely ignore the matter, they would certainly face problems down the line.

Issues such as sponsors being forced to terminate their details after customers informing them that they wouldn't deal with them if they continued to support the ECB.

Personally, I'd like to see people standing up to these modern day pile ons usually made by doo gooders who haven't heard of the person they are complaining about and work towards returning to a time when an 18 year old lad making a daft comment was just an 18 year old lad making a daft comment.

We can't allow this nonsense to continue.

Dropped for the next test regardless of performance

When I was a teenager back in 80's I was calling Referees B**** B*******. Was also going to places where it was the norm to use offensive and derogatory names towards the locals.
I guess back then although going to anti NF rallies, I by my actions was racist. And would also nowdays also be on the sex offenders register. Back then it was also the norm to touch up women in the disco/nightclub. However for the last 35+ yrs I wouldn't put myself in these categories.
I suppose what I am asking the good folk on AVFTT is forgiveness and some sort of exception that back in them days even on main stream TV being racist and a sexuall predictor was seen as the norm. At what point does someone stop being a racist, sexual deviant???. And at what point would you say unfortunately that because that sort of behaviour was normal back then and part of the way we was brought up then you can't really be blamed for being all them nasty, horrible things.?.. But if you was born and brought up in the last 20yrs have no excuse for your bigoted views....

Give over, the self morally perfect on here just won’t have it. You will be forever deems a racist and a sex predator and should be castrated in public. 😂😂

Agree he made a stupid mistake but, like you, I wondered what sort of person (who had obviously been sitting on this information) waited until the morning of this guys test debut (one of the greatest days of his life) to stick the knife in. Nobody comes out of this with any credit.

You're putting words in people's mouths to try and exaggerate your point, no one has said that.

One test match ban is perfectly right in this environment (no matter what Dowden says), it's a slap on the wrist.

I think you're right FY8 but he absolutely won't be selected for a while because of this. Similar to Foden and Greenwood breaking da rules in Iceland.

Not really, I don’t need to as the decision is absolutely pathetic.

In this context, I think all humans should be judged the same. He made a couple of stupid comments about 10 years ago - when he was 18.
Contrary to one of the posters above I don't believe most 18 year olds never say something they "shouldn't".
He wasn't a famous cricketer then, just a young man.
He's apologised. Let's move on with no further punishment, I would say.
If he did it now, as a grown adult and very much in the public eye. Fair enough.
How far back should we delve into people's lives?
I doubt many famous people in any walk of life were totally perfect in every aspect of their lives as young adults - just like 95%+ of us, I reckon.
What next? Someone banned because 20 years ago, they ended a relationship with a cruel text or message i.e. treating another woman or man badly...so therefore "they must hate all men/women". I think the ECB decision is ridiculous and weak.

Yeah, let's have lots more racist rants on twitter etc. Woke culture gone mad.
How is kneeling on the pitch going to stop the crap on Twitter?

He's not putting words in peoples mouths at all, how many accusations of racism have you seen on these threads over a simple disagreement?

The human brain doesn't develop fully until around the age of 25. We use the frontal cortex to use logic and experience to make decisions. Children on the other hand use the amygdala which is the seat of emotion. As children get older connections between the amygdala and. the frontal cortex develop only becoming fully formed at 25.

At 18 he isn't still a child but on the other hand, he isn't fully developed either. In fact, he is only halfway between being an 11-year-old and having reached full maturity.

I see the parole board have agreed to let "sexual predator" from the 80's Colin Pitchfork out of jail

So no worries....he's done his time and was only a young man when he committed those killings.....so according to some on here.....
We should leave him alone because it was 33 years ago....and he was only 22.... 🤔

Oh........🙌🙌🙌...Hands up if you find your knuckles dragging as you walk.....Anyone???

If you think that sexual assault is on a par with some mildly offensive tweets, then I think you are the one who needs to lift his knuckles a little higher 😀. It's a poor analogy, and not like you.

B-Side is obviously a solid gold wind-up merchant, not to be taken seriously. He never really has anything to contribute unless he wants to try and insult somebody.

Must admit it was a little close to the bone and not one of my better attempts.....so I do apologise....ill get me coat

I haven't seen the Tweets by Mr Robinson and to be honest, I doubt I would go looking for them.
Lets not go down the route of reading more into it than really happened....kid says something stupid.....now regrets it.....A bit like my last post....!!!
He's said sorry...and it's tomorrows chip paper......a bit like my last post.

So..Nothing to see here....unless Eagle Day wants to finish off Montag with a chorus of "Tomorrow belongs to me".........Yes, got the insult in as well...!

I agree. It must be hard work having to post froth about this sort of stuff when what you really want to do is save energy to rally round Yaxley-Lennon next time he needs it.

Gotta say, I always look forward to your posts, did Carol sing that?

Agreed, the other thing here is the media’s role in this, I mean how scummy do you need to be to wait for this lad to get his dream debut and drop the bombshell to try and create a pathetic smear story. They really are the lowest of the low

Horrible as it is to think, I can imagine some of the people on these threads diving into some historical post and sending the info to the media.

I take it you'll be supporting the return of Shemima Begum, she was only 15 after all...
I think you will find it’s the likes of you who were telling everyone she should be allowed back in as she didn’t know what she was doing due to her age. I think the decision to cancel him over daft comments the scum media dug up to purposely defame the man on his debut is pure wokery at its finest from people like you. And to answer your question, don’t be ** ridiculous

You're making out he should be excused because of his age. Doesn't the same apply or does that only count if you're white? I'm not advocating her return but I am interested in your bed wetting snowflakery.

On the subject of something we said/did at some point in our life, I guess most of us are guilty, whether we’re white, black or any other colour. It’s then a question of how far you take it, should we lose our jobs? I’m not sure that’s going to stop serious racists, and even those who make casual comments, will now be more careful, but it’s still there, just hidden.

But you are putting Robinsons silly messages in the same bracket as someone who joined Isis. Class.
I don't understand what relevance the seriousness of the offence has to the question of whether age is a mitigating factor. Either it is and therefore applies across the whole gamut of criminal behaviour or it isn't and everyone should face the same punishment for the same crime regardless of age. Though to be fair to Robinson is what he did even a crime?

But criminal behaviour has different levels of punishment depending on the crime. And that's irrespective of age.

We can debate how the tweets were unearthed, but once they were, the ECB were put in a position where they had to act. It's no good saying 'he was only a kid' or 'in the real world' etc...He's an England cricket international. It's the national summer sport and is covered by all major media outlets and generates a lot of revenue. The governing body simply could not sit back and do nothing and then expect to be taken seriously when discussing inclusivity. The 'target' of some of the tweets becomes even more relevant when you consider the popularity of cricket within British asian communities and the obvious divisions that often exist between Asian-dominated club teams and white-british teams. And then there's also the question over encouraging more black kids to take up the sport.

I wonder who dug up these facts about Ollie Robinson?
Have they nothing better to do than search for what people said when they were young, naive and inexperienced?

Lessons to be learned. If you put things in writing they can be useful as evidence but can also come back to bite you. Whereas a verbal comment in the correct context within a conversation can be construed to mean something completely different. I don’t consider myself a racist but you’re not telling me all the shock horror merchants haven’t told a joke about how many Pakistanis can you get in a phone box. This merely takes the micky out of the amount of people in houses, cars etc compared to our norm. Or closer to home the Englishman Irishman & Scotsman. There are lots of cultures with things we don’t approve of & I'm sure this applies to us too. I’m not convinced that is being racist though. I don’t particularly like some of the Yanks, the mad gun toting lunatics but we can’t tar all Americans with the same brush. Plus we also have our share. I believe there is a difference between comments over cultural things & genuine race hatred & violence. PS I haven’t seen this cricketers Tweets.

But criminal behaviour has different levels of punishment depending on the crime. And that's irrespective of age.
Of course. The effect of age as a mitigating factor though is the same. For example if being 18 means you are 20% less culpable then a crime with a full tariff of 10 years means you get 8 years instead while a crime worth 10 months means 8 months.

Scara appeared to argue that it was ridiculous to apply the argument that a 15-year-old should have any allowance made for her age based on the seriousness of what she has done. To me it appears totally illogical to claim maturity is not age based but offence based.

Not great timing given all this taking the knee and BLM being spoke about. The ECB will need to do something that appeases public and media opinion.
OK the jokes were racist but there are programmes on TV still shown to this day that tell blatant racist jokes as a form of comedy and entertainment. If they were posted on Twitter then you could expect a call from the police. Why is a post on Twitter so bad yet broadcasting on national tv ok?

Lets all get upset and get him banned or suspended from all TV work.
Well that’s just it isn’t it, it’s an unnecessary racist comment, where’s the uproar. Should he be held accountable or is it all a load of one sided political garbage. You decide.
