Omicron - should be worried?

The point is / was that nobody knows how serious or how bad Omicron is.
We have taken (for once) some pre-emptive action, but like everything with Johnson, he is trying to please everybody so we end up with these illogical half-measures. For instance, don't travel to work but do go to an xmas party - it is crazy. My workplace have just cancelled all xmas parties, this is the correct thing to do IMO.
As things move forward, more information will become available and policy and measures can be changed accordingly. I've always been fairly easy going and these small things that we have been asked to do are minor sacrifices (wear a mask, get vaccinated, social distance etc). This period will end one day and we will find a way of living with the virus. Omicron could be the beginning of the end of the pandemic but ATM it is too early to tell, hence the restrictions.
Illogical measures are a consequence of having a populist PM. He'll do and say anything to keep people happy.

I’m negative, thankfully.

But it’s almost certain the virus was brought into my office by the one unvaccinated person in the room and the facts are that if if you aren’t vaccinated you are more infectious.

As a result a few of my vaccinated friends and colleagues have had a really sh*t week of it having caught it from this person.

I don’t think the vaccine should be mandatory, but if you decide not to have it, know that it really is others you are affecting too.

All around me caught it last week. We have decided I am a medical marvel, or I really did have it early last year before testing and all that.

Hope it’s the latter and I’m done with it.

Thinking it was from the unvaccinated person is just a hunch by the sounds of it. This divide and rule must stop, if you've been vaccinated (as I have) that's great but let's stop blaming non vaccinated folk as its not right, last time I checked other vaccines eg measles protects you and who gives a toss about others.

They were the first person in the room with symptoms, by a few days. So more than a hunch unfortunately. And the science does say the non vaccinated are more infectious.
I’m not saying that everyone should be vaccinated, I know it’s an individual choice. But I’m not about denying that it makes a diffetence to yourself and others, because it does. And we shouldn’t be afraid to acknowledge that for fear of upsetting anyone.

The 1st role of a govt is to protect its citizens. I'm ** sick of this word scaremongering, whether it be aimed at brexit or covid, its childish deflection from adult issues, it's the perfect phrase for a dumbed down society.
Calm down dear. Scaremongering is exactly the right word to describe new restrictions being imposed and a deluge of panicky headlines for a new variant that all evidence (so far) suggests is less dangerous.

It's still unproven though. I'm vaccinated and just had the booster. I'm not too fussed if others hadn't had it as long as the vaccine does what it's supposed to do.

It may be less dangerous, the jury is still out on that. The R rate is 4 5 which is far more transmissible and has an ability to bypass vaccines. I'm sure that most people can see the issue, if it turns out to be a wet lettuce that great but to brand it as scaremongering is just a bland catchphrase.

This is the truth about the virus.

Those in some of the best positions to know about the dangers of this virus didn't care about it, they weren't afraid which tells us a lot.

This was pre vaccine too.

Also Mark nails this...

A lot want to keep hating on this but GB news is one of the only channel questioning the questionable decisions being made.

I predict, just as many have come round to saying they won't let the government ruin their Christmas now and will ignore them, that as time goes on more and more people see it like this and we look back at this pandemic and restrictions, the costs of the restrictions unfavourably.

A lot were unnecessary and the doomsday scientists who always want more and harder restrictions forever to try and beat a virus which is impossible. I predict more and more people start to see that this just isn't necessary and as long as sage are effectively running the country normailty will never return.

Scaremongering is absolutely the right word.
With regards to the GB News clips posted above, I agree with much of the content, but not all of it.
However, what’s striking is you don’t see anything like that on sky or bbc news. Instead you get the ones who have been vetted and who agree to hold the party line. It’s completely one-dimensional biased brainwashing.
If anyone does slip through the net, they’re quickly taken off air. As with the epidemiology statistician from st.Andrews university that was giving a critique of plan B when it was initially drawn up. All was going swimmingly well until she said statistically there was no difference with infection rates between masked and unmasked populations. The presenter challenged this saying surely that’s not right as otherwise ‘why would mask wearing be part of plan B?’ - to which she replied that she was just stating what the statistics showed. I could almost hear the producer in the presenters earphone saying ‘oh my god - get this woman off NOW!’, as he calmly said ‘thanks we’ll have to leave it there’. This statistician hasn’t been seen since. For now it’s just her tv career that’s been blighted. But if it were China she’d perhaps be disappeared. That’s the direction we’re headed too. No room for any dissenting voices. They’re branded crackpots or idiots and cancelled. We’ve seen news/chat shows where panels of 4 or 5 have pounced on anyone who has had the audacity to question something Covid related. Pounced on. Bullied. Ridiculed. And cancelled.
That’s sadly why too many have fallen into group think syndrome. They’re almost labotomised with after two years of being fed the same scaremongering and the drastically exaggerated figures.
We could see 25,000 or 1 million or 10 million or five zillion quintillion by tomorrow. A tsunami. Armageddon. It’s the end of the world as we know it.

Malced we already know that Omicron is much more transmissible don't we?

What would you suggest to stop the transmission? 😷

You know what strikes me?

The greatest scientific minds the country, doctors, professors, etc, they all say "we don't know", but the anti-vax Covid deniers know everything.

Here's a thought: maybe you don't know either.
I'm not an anti vax nor covid denier, had both jabs and took it all too seriously at first and my opinion has altered over time, plus once jabbed it all changed anyway as we all got the protection that should last for serious disease according to many studies.

But I can see there's other ways to approach things than what were doing and the collateral damage of the restrictions is in many cases worse than the disease.

The fact is when put in charge, scientists will always work to their models and think worst case just in case and not factor in other issues it causes. Has Neil Ferguson ever been right about a prediction and when you have people like that Professor Susan Mitchiein sage, is an apparent member of the communist party who wants restrictions forever....

Then we can see why this won't end well.

Yep, at least on there you hear all sides, they have people on who support the measures but also people who see though it.

I watch GMB and others if the content is worth watching and then can make our own minds up.

But I have to say I'm in much agreement with the content above now.

About cancelling from mainstream media and programmes heres just another example of not getting the answer they wanted.

We can’t stop the transmission. Just like we couldn’t stop delta.
We have a population with a very high vaccination rate.
We know who the most vulnerable are.
We know that for almost all of us it will be a mild illness if an illness at all.
We know over 90% of the country have antibodies.
By all accounts so far this new variant is less harmful.
We know that restrictions cause huge damage financially and health-wise.
We should and could be much smarter on protecting the vulnerable whilst ensuring healthy low risk folk can live and prosper in a free society.
We seem to have a government being controlled by pessimistic scientific geeks who have a one dimensional obsessive perspective on the world. They don’t consider the impact of restrictions in the round.
The government has a huge majority given that they have Labour voting with them on all things Covid.
So unfortunately we aren’t getting true debate or challenge on Covid restrictions. I find that uncomfortable. I also feel the mainstream press are awful and merely support the government narrative.
I don’t like the direction of travel where we are shaming and bullying folk into getting vaccinated. I don’t like the concept of having show a digital passport to live our lives.
We know it’s a serious disease for those it afflicts.
But we should in a free western society where we encourage vaccine take up with positivity. We should accept and respect that not all will want to take it.
We should protect the vulnerable better and let the rest of us get on with working and living with the low risk this virus brings.
We’ve had two years of this and it’s no way to live. It’s not sustainable. It’s incredibly damaging. It’s disproportionate. We can do much better.
This is just my opinion. I’m not an expert. Even the experts don’t agree with each other. It’s difficult and I can see why the government need to err on the side of caution at times. But we need an exit strategy rather than taking the path of crippling the country every time there’s a new variant.

Exactly - it stinks.
They’re not reporting the news. They’re trying to make the news in line with their own opinions.

Look its never going to change, you have the paranoid (scared ) believers and and the non believers ( past caring ). Both sides will continue to argue their cases, but nothing will change and nobody is going to change the others minds.

Exactly, and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on it goes. Past caring.

We cannot just wish this away.
The first Omicron cases have now arrived in UK hospitals despite what the experts on this thread are saying;

Omicron cases doubling in the UK every 2.4 days.
You do know this is people already in hospital who have simply tested positive?

It’s classic media scaremongering like this that’s the problem and that people struggle to see through.

Some of their minds will change as this goes on, thats my prediction as the evidence becomes clear. Obviously the government, opposition and media are powerful and may not concede they were wrong which makes anyone arguing the opposite case a crackpot in their eyes. But I think as has already happened people realise this cannot go on.

I see the German police walking about with 2meter measuring sticks yesterday 😂😂😂

I’ve had my three vaccinations, I work from home, I socially distance and I’ve done my bit over the past 20 months so I’m getting on with my life now.
Those of you who want to worry and watch the news and get more worried and believe what the government are telling you more fool you.

Are you referring to this which I found on a BBC article or some other evidence?

"Dr Susan Hopkins, chief medical adviser for the UK Health Security Agency, said that she expected to see an increase in the number of people in hospital with Omicron infection.

It is not clear if those people who are in hospital with Omicron are there because of the virus or for other reasons."

There will be some hospitalised by this variant but in SA they said only 10% needed oxygen compared to 100% in past waves and are recovering quicker, so less of a burden.

Not to mention SA is vastly unjabbed too, were massively jabbed as a nation.

Also whilst a joke i don't get why people support showing passports linked to medical procedures it's a dangerous path.

The above pic is a joke but imagine if and when its not just applied to big events but everywhere.

No more dashing to the shops if your battery is gone for eg. Old people who don't have phones maybe and lose their pass.

These are just the smaller issues.

I’m getting on with my life and I certainly don’t want anymore lockdowns.
I’m still taking sensible precautions though, the mask is back on in shops and Im keeping my distance from crowds and 1 metre from strangers where possible.

You can sit somewhere in the middle, not being hysterical, but still being mindful.

All hail Essex publican Alex Brooks. If only Jade Goody was alive to offer her pearls of wisdom 👍 I'd love to know what Joey Essex and Arge think.

Does it matter who posts the data they get from other sources like lbc, channel 4 and the spectator doomsday sage modelling.

What matters is the data.

Similar for me - except I try to keep 1m+ away from everyone as your friends/neighbours/relatives are just as likely as "strangers" to have covid 🤪 👍

It’s not his pearl of wisdom it’s from the SA doctor who discovered the new variant. Is that a reputable enough source for you 🤡

Oh and he’s called Adam.

And I've just listened to the South African doctor. Covid in general is classed as a mild disease, it still hospitalises a lot of people and generally they weak and vulnerable are prone to death. Omicron may be milder but the transmission rate is very high meaning it can still cause havoc. But let's all get behind Adam the Essex publican.

Why are you focusing on Adam? It’s very strange. Your focus should be on what the SA Doctor said in the video which is pleasing news is it not? Who tweets it is irrelevant.

But no, you focus on Adam the Essex publican.

I've heard what the doctor said and commented. One of the above threads has Adam retweeting Steve ** Baker FFS I've just spat my brew out laughing. Credibility zero

Jesus a retweet?! Wasn’t worth wasting a brew over.
It's a well know fact, apparently, that if anyone who isn't an expert retweets good information from a good source, that instantly becomes useless information.

Let's think about this in a digital world, the equivalent in the real world would be like a fact sheet coming through the letter box from a source you trust.

That letter is picked up off the floor in front to you and passed to you by your flat mate.

Suddenly the facts you are reading lose all credibility.

Why would I believe this shit passed to me from Barry who lives in a flat, what nonsense 😒

So the fear ramps up, now alert level 4 OMG 😲

Despite no matter what info we have through from South Africa, like the video above with that doctor reiterating what's been said all along, this is mild in all ages, she couldn't be clearer and they can't fathom why we won't believe them.

They aren't even well jabbed in numbers there like we are.

Yet now its all about the booster, the booster get the booster, full steam ahead. The south Africans could come out and say only joking there is no omicron and our lot would say well just in case there ever is we better carry on.

We now have % fear wars used to scare people.

Like for eg if they say hospitalisation up 500% they might leave out if its from 1 person to now 5 people.

I can't wait to see how the government and main media try to spin this if it carries on as expected. Using % with no context can be misleading and there will be some who need treatment, but so far not a death reported anywhere.

I thought I would have a look on some South African news websites to see if we should be .concerned.
What I found out is that they are more concerned about the worst host ever for this years Miss Universe competition! And the result of the Abu Dhabi grand prix.
This tells me we should be more concerned by the reaction of our government and less concerned by omicron.

It does feel like we are back in the summer when the Govt removed the tier restrictions and all the predictions from Sage were for 200k per day cases and mass genocide.

We had the same arguments on here with some saying let’s go and others wanting Boris tried as a war criminal.
Result was nothing happened.

Then it was because it was summer and Sept would be the apocalypse as kids went back to school.

Result was nothing happened.

We now seem to be back there again. Same debate, probably same outcome.

The modelling is clealry a load of worst case crap.

You can see in that chart in the tweet above taken from the spectator, the predicted doom and reality.

But it was however a tweet passed on by a publican which as we know makes the data invalid....

How many times have sage been wrong now? Some in sage want restrictions forever.

The government now though has put itself in a position where it followed this so if it doesn't its suddenly going against the science, same with the opposition, although they want more restrictions anyway.

But if someone doesn't go along with it it's... how wreckless ignoring the data.

Well if the data is proven wrong on many occasions.

Also the constant news from SA about how mild it in in any age she said, jabbed or unjabbed, yet 2 isn't enough for us.

What they mean is 2 isn't enough to stop you catching it, they're obsessed with not catching it which is almost unachievable with covid, the main protection is against severe disease.

The problem with all this is that the government are trying to keep the pressure off the NHS without making it obvious that years and years of underinvestment, a big lack of staff post-Brexit and a lot wasted of money (Nightingale hospitals anyone...?) are the fundamental reasons why the NHS is under pressure anyway.

The narrative that the country is being ruled through fear is nonsense. It's about keeping ICU beds free of people who have a preventable virus so those who keel over with an unexpected issue can be treated.

The problem with the above though, is that messages have become so daft (like mask on to walk in the pub. mask off to sit in the pub. mask on to go to the bog) that it's impossible to trust anyone.

Agree about the contradictory messaging etc.

However, they clearly have used fear, yo great effect and the media have played a huge part.

Fear has been one of their main tools for compliance with often questionable rules.

Fear allows them to claim and keep the unprecedented powers they now have.

It's been massively used.

Can you explain why they want 'the unprecedented powers'? The damage this has done to the UK economy will be felt for years. Even the bunch of jokers in charge aren't stupid enough to think it's worthwhile for some dystopian myth around Big Brother style surveillance or whatever.
