OT The Hundred

Really enjoyed that tonight, Salt and Buttler were simply awesome.

It was bloody brilliant tonight. Can knock the tournament all you like but 19000 there after an afternoon of rain. It's popular. And with a game like that you can see why. Entertainment for all.

Bodes really well for the 50 over WC and the T20 WC early next year.

Listened to Salt after the game and he explained their roles that he has a rather hit or miss role of going for it to allow JB to anchor the innings. Salt has been dreadful this comp but has turned a corner just in time.

To be honest I've still not got my head around the 5 and 10 ball sets, I much prefer a proper 6 ball over like all the other white ball comps, but love it or loathe it you have to admire the numbers and people of all ages are turning up to see these run fests, it also helps develop our young home grown players improve against world class stars with the likes of Jamie Smith, Will Smeed, Gus Atkinson, Henry Brookes and John Turner all now pushing for an England call up.

i just can’t get my head round this tournament nothing wrong with 20/20 maybe it’s no Lancashire and being forced to support Manchester or force feeding women’s cricket on us I have tried but not for me

Any other of the worlds cricket countries took on the hundred yet?
Why would they? All of the major cricketing nation's have their own franchise T20 tournaments. The Hundred is no different other than them tweaking the format. I understand people not liking the format but at the end of the day it's a 16.4 over cricket match. Very little difference to T20.

If you like short form cricket you will tune in. Despite it being trashed by the AVFTT so called experts the general public love it and turn out in their thousands for 2 hours of family entertainment. Which is what cricket is meant to be.

Turned the shite off on BBC. Talk about southern bias. It's a ** joke and don't enjoy watching.

It's absolutely a triumph of marketing. People bumming it cos it's got people watching! It's on terrestrial telly and you can't move on the BBC without them going on about it and they fire out free tickets left right and centre cos they've chucked shit loads at it. It would be a miracle if there wasn't a full house.

It's a marketing executives idea of sport, the equivalent of coked up pricks saying 'yeah, what about football but with, like 8 players and 3 goals, yeah, with third goal for bonus goals'

It's actually worse than shit.

Shifting text cricket to accommodate this is like pulping the works of Shakespeare to print the Sunday Sport

(I only said the above really cos I though Mac wanted someone to give him the froth and bile he loves to mock - I just ignore it in reality)

(and I actually quite like T20, don't mind it at all been good for the game - this is just a competition too far and in all seriousness, the cricket schedule is an absolute mess and the ECB should play either the Hundred OR the T20 cos it's pure burn out and confusion in cricket as there's players playing literally 6 different formats all year round now)

The only reason it exists is to be a product the ECB can license I think.

Well my old pal we will have to agree to disagree on this one.

It's been huge for the women's game. It attracts the world's best when not on international duty and is pure entertainment.

And the free ticket thing is a huge exaggeration.

It's cricket in it's purest form. As it was dreamed up when it was invented. "Other" cricket is moved because it's old fashioned, boring, and nobody is watching it. Factamundo.

The only reason they came up with the Hundred was because the ECB cocked up, didn't register ie trademark T20, which would have been lucrative with other countries copying the format, so they came up with the new brand which no other country wants. With county players scattered all over cricket supporters have no allegiance to clubs especially if they no where near the major cities.

Ridiculous.

The whole premise of franchise cricket is that there is a game on every evening (2 with the women's game). County cricket does not work in franchise terms due to squads playing other forms and there was already an established T20 county competition.

You say nobody wants it. Meaning you don't like it. But the grounds are full. People are watching it and enjoying it. So get used to it.

The only criticism I have is the Manchester Originals name. It should have been a North West something name. I get that.

Imagine you've no Sky and been starved of any live cricket for years and years on terrestrial TV and your suddenly served up this pile of sh1t?
It won't last and there's already plenty of plans to shelve it and replace it with T20. It will probably stumble on for a couple of years just to save face but it will be gone very soon.

This comp was sold to us by the “price of everything, value of nothing” ECB management team of Colin Graves and Tom Harrison as the saviour of English cricket.

Per those pair of counts, the finances would revolutionise English cricket. It has. The competition loses money. But hey ho, it was bonuses all round before these two left the building.

We would see the best overseas players in the world playing in the comp. We don’t.

And we would get the game back on terrestrial TV. Done that, but tv numbers were down in 2022 compared to 2021.
And whilst the pair of counts made sure there was a Sky deal with their buddies till 2028, the terrestrial deal runs out in either this or next year (not sure which)

We had a established T20 comp, which could have been combined with a regional womens comp. But as said above, this was never about the cricket. It was all about inventing a product which could be licensed around the world. That’s not happening, the specific 100 product isn’t wanted.

So the last hope is for the ECB to sell the franchises to overseas investors who see the boom in sports TV rights and think they can make money out of that,

If what they are buying is a 4 week prime window in the cricket season, then maybe they can. But it remains a long shot, and meanwhile the Hundred distorts the rest of the season’s structure.

I've watched it as I love cricket but its just a slightly shorter version of T20.

We already have a fantastic T20 competition so why invent another? It said it would be on 'normal' TV but its only the odd game so that was a lie!!

The calendar is already packed so there's absolutely no need for it . . . yes it's been popular but not as much as the T20 blast.

The only good thing about it is that it gives the younger players a chance in the 50 over comp.

Crazy idea that needs to be scrapped.

Also it's very hard for most fans to have an affinity with one club because they are a mixture of players from all counties.

Lancs players are playing for nearly all the various teams so very hard to support any one team.

Saying that I will always support the Northern team so was wanting Manchester to be Oval yesterday.

It's like if we had a region football team . . could you support a North West team that had both Blackpool and Preston players in it . . don't think I could?

Was I the only one who enjoyed it then 🤷‍♂️

My only gripe is the name of 'our' team.
Shouldn't have been Manchester. Should have been something like North West....

Nope - I enjoyed it . . just feel it's totally unnecessary.

It has been given priority over every other form of cricket and it's a format of cricket which is internationally irrelevant.

It forced the Ashes test series into a very small window . . . it has totally devalued 50 over cricket - you know that white ball format we are world champions at and is actually played by other countries . . . tried but failed to replace the T20 blast . . made a mockery of the county championship by totally hijacking the grounds and the fixture list.

Big crowds in the school summer holidays shock! Have a T20 game on every evening IN August and big crowds will attend especially if broadcast on terrestrial TV. Some big crowds have been turning up for the Metro 50 over competition, which mainly features second eleven players, ( but they are our players) not a mercenary in for his big pay day with no interest in the county team.

Yeah because the Metro 50 gets crowds like The Hundred (rolls eyes).....

No mate. I think it's been fabulous too. But you'll get no change from this lot on here.

They'd prefer these stadiums empty other than a few "members" watching 4 day games. They complained when T20 came and said it was the death of cricket. It's still here, absolutely prospering and funding all other forms of cricket.

The Hundred is essentially a T20 game minus 20 balls (obviously) and looks to be another massive hit for the sport in terms of viewing figures and finance. Another one for the moaners to moan about yet it's making cricket a global phenomenon.

People who don't like change get left behind.

Because the whole purpose of franchise cricket is to have a smaller number of teams in which a match is showcased every evening. There are too many teams in the Blast to do this and there is a schedule of multiple games at random times in the week.

A new franchise gave them chance to develop something new around the major grounds. As for players crossing over it was weird in the first year but doesn't bother me at all now.
