Our famous sovereignty

It's not counting for much, is it?

Compare the comprehensive response to Russia by the EU with our feeble effort.

Turns out that "taking back control" doesn't include biting the hand that feeds the Tory Party.
We do what we want
We do what we want
We are the UK
We do what we want...

Good, bad or indifferent it's our choice to make in our national interest.

So if the EU declare war on Russia we won’t do anything because it’s not our war?

Jesus H Christ. 🙄

Admit it it’s just another stick to beat over Brexit.

It's a sign to Russia that Western Europe is divided. Surely you can see that?
We may be divided over Brexit, but make no mistake here wiz, if and when required the UK will be in arms together with the rest of Europe to get rid of a mentalist if required. If putin doesn’t understand that then he’s made a very poor judgment call.

Hi. I'm not in the Uk now, as I can only get a job abroad, though not in Europe, which will no longer accept native English speakers to teach their mother tongue. I'd like to go back to the UK to reunite with my ageing parents (87 and 89), brother, sister and grand-kids. How much more favourable is it to live and work in the UK for a highly-qualified, experienced professional, now that we're not in the EU? I'm open to persuasion, and have very valuable skills.

Agreed. It's not an EU response, it's NATO in that event.

Except that Western Europe isn't divided over this subject. Surely you can see that?
Our sanctions are a sop compared to what others have done.

And I was referring to the general political tone, not the current situation.

Sanctions refer to the current situation, not the general political situation.

Our sanctions are what is in our remit to control. Compared to say, Belguim's or Netherlands' sanctions they're amazing.

The test will be how hard the sanctions hit our own economies and which countries are prepared to take the hit. NordStream 2 isn't running yet so keeping it not running isn't that big a deal and Germany has a big economic presence in Russia. Let's see how things play out before condemning the UK.

Well for a highly qualified, experienced professional.. your not very bright then!!! But of course you still live in the UK, just like all those that where leaving the UK once Brexit happened. Must try harder at being a smart arse!!

UK, USA and EUpay Russia £700 million a day for gas and oil.

Unbelievable were still taking those flows. Stop it now.

It’s most certainly not divided in times of war.
Surely you can see that?
I agree, but the war has happened because of the obvious splits and the assumption we won't do anything about it. It's 1939 all over again.

We haven't stood up to the bully, we've invited him and his mates in and let them run the place with impunity.

So when you say the obvious splits what exactly do you mean? Are you referring to us leaving the EU?

A split funded by Russia of course. Of course that. It played completely into Russia's hands to have a major player actively slagging off the rest of their erstwhile colleagues.

So a simple Yes/No.

Would Putin have invaded Ukraine had we still been in the EU?
A more coordinated response might have prevented it. We'll never know.

As it is, we've had a decade of taking our eye off the ball, taking the Russian rouble and alienating our partners.

Using what manpower and weaponry? The Tories have denuded the armed forces. We are at our weakest we've ever been Why don't you just go and fly a flag if it makes you feel better? Just don't let reality interfere with your daydreams.

Russia invades another country and some on here [AVFTT] are more obsessed with criticising this country than condemning Russias actions. Shame on you but that's what you lefties are good at.
That’s rich coming from someone who hasn’t condemned Putin’s ‘actions‘ yet

Whilst our European neighbours who are members of the EU have had their leaders meeting in Brussels today to discuss and present a united front, we have chosen to absent ourselves from these discussions because of our desire for “Sovereignty” - we have reduced our influence on the World Stage and that is a direct consequence of the path this country decided to take.

We are now just a side note in this whole crisis with no influence on a large portion of Europe where, once upon a time we were one of the big boys at the table, still that’s what we voted for, innit!

PS but lets be clear, Putin is the bad guy and there has never been a better time to provide a united front with our NATO Allies and hopefully some of the damage caused recently with our neighbours can be repaired, but we must stand strong and together.

Not one single person of any persuasion has condoned Russias actions. That's a fact.

You're making it up.

This situation has come about because of the lack of cooperation in Europe, whether real or perceived. Its given Putin carte blanche to do what he likes.

Utter rubbish! This situation hasn't come about because of the lack of cooperation in Europe. It's come about because of a power crazed Russian madman. But you carry on banging your sad old Brexit drum.

Let's see how long it takes for the 27 EU countries to agree a strategy. I hope they're a bit quicker than they are on trade deals.

HAHAHAHAHAHA OK 66.

Good , it’s times like this the world needs a strong world leader 👍Hope she doesn’t get carried away with her writing and forget to make his drinking chocolate, we need him on top form!
Is this the intelligent dialogue you were talking about the other day

haven’t you got cows to kick or something

Well we can’t really influence that any more can we, mind you with a PM more concerned about his own backside and links to Russia and a Foreign Secretary who’s posted her 48th official photograph in a week on Twitter and was shocked to discover her counterparts in Russia have had the cheek to lie to her, there might have been a delay in attending anyway!
