Our 'worst' FA Cup defeat

Which was the one where BSA's balloons didn't take off and they popped them all and in front of the West was just a tangerine rubber mess on the pitch 😆

Any stick out for you? Was it Hnedsford that we lost to under Megson .. that all turned a bit nasty from memory!
Hednesford Town was bad. Only just snuck past Colwyn Bay and Blyth Spartans too in the 90s.

That 4-3 with Spartans was a mental game. 3-1 down if I remember correctly

0-2 at home to Mansfield, 4th round 1970.

I think Mansfield were only one division below us, but after the euphoria of beating Arsenal 3-2 and with the Pool riding high in the league, this young kid was looking forward to a stroll into the 5th round.
The first of many heartbreaks - and the first always hurts the most 😭

The 2009 defeat at Torquay was a rubbish day all round.

Grayson had gone to Leeds, loads of loanees had gone back to their clubs, it was freezing cold and it’s a long way from Hampshire on a train with no heating. I appreciate it’s a lot longer from Blackpool.

We got beat by a Conference team and showed little enthusiasm for the task.

However, I will trade that day for the ones that followed over the next 18 months….

The recent defeat to Hartlepool was pretty bad, not just because we lost, but because we played our first team and ended up with injuries to key players

Was it Husband and Anderson who ended up with long term hammy injuries after the game?

1959 was way before my time, but I can recall a post by @FessParker about us losing 1-0 to Luton when all the other big teams had been knocked out. A big opportunity missed.

Altrincham I think was the first time we had ever lost to non league opposition so that was one hell of a shock but Hednesford trumped that as we'd only missed out on promotion the previous season and we still had some quality in the team. Megson cowering under a table in the dressing room with irate fans trying to batter the door down shows the feelings that day.

I think that was in the 6th round and Alan Brown was playing for Luton. We drew at home then lost at Luton to a Billie Bingham goal if my memory serves me right. Remember being gutted at the time as a young lad.

Weren't we Division 3 and them Division 4 that day?

Yep we were in 3 and 4. But roll it back 18 months before that and we were fifth in Division 2 and they were in the Northern Premier League.

I think lots of people, me included, just thought what the eff are we playing at this dump for? A feeling that became more and more prevalent as we became used to the likes of the shale ends at Halifax and Rochdale and assorted non league nomarks.

YES it would have been . A large crowd gathereed around the managers office. MEGSON OUT MEGSON OUT. I had my son with me. Daddy why are the men shouting about. Going to go with Blyth Spartans . Budgie was in goal for them. early 2000s FA cup eh/

halifax fanzine was called where were you at the Shay.

Maybe not the worst but very disappointing when we played Everton in the fA Cup under Olly.
Big, expectant away following at a northwest Premiership club and he goes and fields a weakened line up, and lo and behold we go 2-0 down before my arse has touched the seat, what a waste.

Yes I was there too but in fairness getting back to the Prem was the main aim that season. As it turned out resting players backfired as we lost at home to West Ham the following tuesday night.

What do you mean? I know,, read it again I said the main aim was to get back to the Pem. I know very well we lost at Southampton the previous season

Nobbers 1-0 Pool. Nov 94. Drove back up the M55 at 100mph+ straight into night shift. Hateful!
Mrs was expecting wizzling No2 at the time and a mate from work leant me his pager incase Mrs went into labour 🤪 didn't have a mobile in them days!!
Shite 1-0 defeat and wizzling No2 didn't turn up for days!!

Frustrating few days for you, but at least you got a great result ultimately! 😉

We lost toLeague 1 side Southampton in our PL season. We loaned Puncheon after that game.
Everton defeat was following season.
Didn’t we beat Liverpool the week after that Southampton Cup game? Remember going all the way down only for Ollie to literally play a team of kids, we got absolutely dicked by an unbelievably good league 1 team….sure it was pretty much a premier league team 2 seasons later

A lot of the main ones been mentioned, Altrincham twice/Hednesford/Yeovil …. Personally the Monday night away FAcup defeat at Nob End. First time we were on sky, big build up with Tony Ellis going back to Dumpdale etc & we bottled it …. Mike Conroy scored (another of those players who always seemed to scored against us)

December 1982 Round 2. Lost away at Nob End 2-1. Terrible day. Took thousands, I was 13 sat in the seats at the side,. loads of trouble around us. The season fizzled out after that and we had to apply for re-election to Division 4. Now that's a shit season. I'm not sure losing at home to Northampton on Tuesday ranks as low, especially after just winning our last two games 4-0 but if it suits some people.

Let’s not dwell on negatives and look back at THE best FA Cup final ever
Wanderers 3 Blackpool 4
Still the only hat trick in an FA cup final and what a crowd
Sadly I was only born the year after but I do have the official match day programme.

On the subject of FA Cup runs, back in 1953/54 as Cup holders we had 3 replays against Luton Town finally succeeding at the fourth attempt. The 4 games were watched by at total of 117,000. Next round it took 2 matches to get past W.H.U. The next round disaster struck and we lost 2-0 to third division Port Vale!! In front of 40,000 Potters. I was outside the ground, my Dad not letting me attend as I was only 9 at the time.

Yep , my first real FA Cup memory. I was having football practice after school at Norbreck when Jim Boucher came and told us we had lost at Luton.
It was Bingham who scored the Luton goal at BR and Alan Brown their goal at Luton.

The year Southampton won the cup '76, we played them away in an earlier round. Long journey down with my dad on a train run by South Shore CC. Included a pack lunch which I hid for the journey home. 3-1 defeat, we missed Blackpools late goal & my pack lunch had been nicked. Long, hungry journey back home.
Bradford City away early 70's. Think they were 4th division & we lost either 2-1 or 2-0. Loads of fighting. I was only about ten.

Gerry Ingram was playing for Bradford that day.
We were pants until last 10 minutes when we pulled a goal back and had a couple goal line clearances for them to avoid a replay. Open terrace in freezing conditions with lots of hostilities!

First away Cup game was in 1966 against Man City in a replay.
We lost 3-1 and were a division below us.
Likewise next season we lost 2-1 at Brum again a division below us.

That Bradford game was my first real encounter with trouble . 4 of us walking back to the station when about a dozen Bradford 'fans' came running up to us and one shouted ' these are from Blackpool'. We scattered . I got away with just a glancing blow before getting sanctuary in a shop, One of the other lads took a couple of nasty hits.
Oh and I was on that Southampton train as well . A long disappointment day , it wasn't me who nicked your butty by the way!

Was a big day for Bradford Fess. Vague memory of a band/group playing on the pitch pre match & Pool fans running on to the pitch & trying to wreck it? The trouble I mentioned was at the train station, think my dad was glad I was there & played the with young kid card. Do remember a large Pool following at the Dell.
