Owen Dale to Oxford?

I think most of the time we plac best in a 4-2-3-1 - so I expect him to play left or right of that 3, with presumably Greg Leigh beyond him on the left - so maybe he'll be better suited in our system, given what you lads have been saying. With our injury hit squad, I have every expectation he will start against you lot in 10 days time too...

From Gazette in January, 2022.

Would like to think we got at least 100k (maybe more here) seeing as we could have just kept him here and triggered the extension for another year and this is a Playoff rival.

He’s been decent, but not a world beater this season. With Coulson, Lyons, Gabriel, and CJ there’s no need for a 5th wingback.

When he first came here from Crewe there were high hopes for him and those hopes were justified with some terrific performances in the Championship (Reading away, Barnsley away), but he just never kicked on.

Very mercurial player, but everyone thought playing consistently at Pompey would should how good he was but was very average there.

Still think there’s a decent player in there especially if he’s played on the wing, but am ok with him going and probably think this move is for him to play in a system where he’s a winger.

Best of luck Owen, but not too much luck.

Yeah he's OK. One of very few players who actually pushed for a move here because he wanted to play in the championship at the time.

Behind a striker(s) or playing off the right with a full back behind will suit him better.

He can't be blamed for Critchley putting him in a position that he's never played in his career at left wing back and expecting him to cover both ends of the pitch. That has never been his game before but he's worked hard and done the job the best he can for us.

Played in his natural position he will have more good games than off days.

If players want to go then ok
But why am I the only one thinks this is a bad idea to sell to a team also pushing for the playoffs 🤷🏻‍♂️
Surly you don’t sell to your rivals
Hope pool have a deal where he dosnt start against us

It's funny isn't it that with some fans, players suddenly become miles better when we are selling them. Truth is Dale is average and has a few good games but if we weren't selling him he wouldn't be getting in our first 11 anyway so get some dosh in the bank.

He certainly would be in with a shout as a natural winger. Would have him competing with Joseph in the forward left position.
Hes not a natural winger as hes not fast enough. Or tricky enough. And his final ball is often lacking, or over hit. Can be good on his day, but if competing with Joseph he has no chance.

My issue is , to a team who can pip you to a playoff place , who says Dale scores that vital goal to help Oxford

I'm surprised by a lot of the comments. I actually think he's done quite well this year but he's not a regular starter and has struggled at times to fit into our formation. If the club have decided to cash in on a squad player it's not the end of the world, even if it is to a promotion rival Oxford.

I don't think anyone is going to be building a shrine to Owen Dale tbf. It's going to be more about if anyone comes in and if they're an upgrade. Or if this month is just a cost cutting exercise.

And if we don't sell him, who says some other player won't score two. Football is too complex and there are too many variables in the season's outcome to say that the sale of one player is the defining factor.
Big risk to take if your ambition is to go up , it looks more financial than a footballing decision to me then
ido get your point , but if my ambition is to get back up , then I wouldn’t sell to a rival to make then stronger , yes ok sell to Fleetwood lol
but if it’s a financial decision , then yes you sell as you might not get that price again

I'd be interested to hear how much. Rumour-mill suggests it's a 'bargain' - makes sense with 6 months left, but I wonder what that is? £50-100k?

Your last sentence is probably the one nearest the mark.

i think it’s cost cutting , like Simon said in September to us fans
if we go up , then good , if not then we go again , running the club is more important
stablity

Dale just doesn’t fit into the 352 system. He has only ever been used in the wingback position this season and for me I’d have Coulson and Lyons ahead of him on the left and Gabriel/Hamilton ahead of him on the right.

A slightly different point, I can’t say I have ever seen this message board up in arms when he’s not started. A lot on here will have jumped on this because of their addiction to moaning about the club.

Yes, we’ve sold to a play off rival. So what? I very much doubt that this transfer improves Oxford’s squad. If he plays in a couple of weeks it will be a comfortable afternoon for whoever is directly against him.

If we signed a player now that couldn’t get a game for Oxford then I’d be very disappointed.

Joseph is obviously better but he won't play 90 minutes of every game. Who in the squad will be filling that gap now, Connolly?!!!!!!!

Why wouldn't you get c75k for a player who isn't a regular starter, now when in 5 months he can go for free.....unless it's not your money....

Hardly cost cutting, more likely fund raising...
We paid, a reported , £250,000 for him. He spent last season on loan and hasn’t made many starts this season. He was injured when he arrived and has now gone for probably far less than we paid. If thats cost cutting I’m bloody glad its not my money.

Another fatality of Critch's tinkering..

Made his debut, scored inside 5 minutes, set up a 2nd and was immediately benched for the next game?

Exactly the same happened with Kouassi and Debelle

For me, he's one of those annoying players, who you know possesses alot of ability, but doesn't show it with any sort of consistency. Maybe the Oxford system might suit him more, I don't know, but he doesn't really fit here with the way Critchley wants to play. He was on loan at Pompey last season, and I think their fans were divided about him as well. Good luck to him but not against us obviously.
There are very few players in this squad of I think is quite a talented squad, that critch is getting the best out of.
Daie showing promise as a wing back, getting into decent form scores a few goals and a few assists- dropped
Carey getting into some form - dropped
Marv similar, Kenny similar, dembele seems to have had his feathers cut a bit, Lyons can hardly get a look in, weird selections in the back three, with Connolly favoured over Marv and Casey and Pennington.

You can’t speak ill of Critchley, thats tantamount to sacrilege. Didn’t you know his return is on a par with the second coming.😉

If he wasnt going to sign a new contract, let him go. While he's done ok, you'd have to say we have better.

As a player I liked him, but didn’t think he got enough game time with us. Felt really sorry to hear about his personal situation last autumn as we’ve been in similar circumstances many years ago.
Best wishes to him and his family and hope things work out well for them all. ❤️
