Paul Mariner RIP

Such sad news.
Great player and a very decent person. He was on Radio Lancashire regularly before he moved to the states and came across as a good bloke.
He had the build and presence of a proper English centre forward.
RIP .

Very good striker in the air and on the ball. He had some successful seasons at Ipswich Town under manager Bobby Robson. RIP Paul.

Dear me that’s sad to hear about. Very decent CF. That Ipswich team which won the UEFA Cup in 1981 had such a strong spine, Mariner at CF, the Dutch midfielders, Butcher and Osman as the Centre Backs...

Oh dear, that's sad news and a shock. His time with Hickson on a Friday night was the first time I really listened to R Lancs.

My first visit to Wembley in 82, a friendly with Holland just before the World Cup, when England friendlies meant something. Paul scored at the tunnel end, think Woodcock might have got the other

very sad to hear this news. was lucky enough to share Paul's company at bloomfield rd when he was working for radio lancs. he was indeed a lovely bloke, warm and friendly with a generous sense of humour, typical lancastrian. top player too, of course. RIP Paul.

Verdi Godwin a former pro footballer who worked alongside Tony Waiters as a lifeguard on Southport beach recommended Paul Mariner to Tony Waiters when he was Manager of Plymouth Argyle. Plymouth paid Chorley around £6K for Mariner and then sold him to Ipswich for £220,000. Chorley had negotiated a sell on fee when they sold Mariner to Plymouth and I was told the money they received paid for a new stand. Another Blackpool link was the formidable partnership Mariner formed at Plymouth with Ex Pool striker Billy Rafferty.

Saw him on US tv a few years ago as a pundit. Looked nothing like the player we knew in the 80’s.

Sad news, he was certainty a star name in that great Ipswich team, with Brazil, Walk, Gates, Muhren, Butcher, Mills etc

What a fantastic side that was and Mariner played his part, an excellent Centre Forward and became a decent commentator, but as I recall he didn’t endear himself to Blackpool fans with some of his comments during derbies - but for all that another good Chorley lad taken too soon RIP Paul.

Yeah. He wasn’t liked on Lancs.

Sad news. He was a very good player.
When Ipswich won the FA cup, his marker was Willie Young. I will always remember the banner "Featherlite Mariner slips round big Willie".

Yeah. He wasn’t liked on Lancs.
Remember those days well. Mariner and Richard Dinnis - didn't Dinnis come and work for us for a while under Worthington?

Sad news about Mariner - 68 seems really young these days (especially when retirement is being pushed up to 67!).
