What's happened to just smashing them

To me it was either open foot into one corner/ closed football into the other corner of head down and smash the granny out of it

Does my head in seeing all these fancy dans now

Even the kids are at it, my 12 year old has taken half a dozen pens this season and hasn't done the same penalty twice

Just smash it

I was a successful penalty taker as a youth. I am left footed so it was a firmly hit inside step into the bottom left every time. Hit firmly the keeper couldn't get there even if they went the right way.

Fully agree Phil.
Come the day I'm in charge of the game I serve notice here that I will be outlawing any break in run up. I would also limit the length of the run itself. But then I'd also outlaw running throw ins, player should stand still at the point indicated.

And while I'm on one, if I was in charge of a team and a player of mine missed a penalty by buggering about then I'd lamp the showboating tw@ so hard he wouldn't be taking another anyway.

Who was the full back at West Ham years ago. That was the way to do it.

Ray Stewart?

Don't like it one bit a form of cheating should be taken in one fluid movement.
Goalkeepers are now getting pulled up for their form of cheating leaving the line to narrow the angle penalty takers should be the same.

I can't say anything, whilst all holiday at St Ives I entered the beach football penalty comp. I successfully navigated to the 2nd round and decided the penenka was the one for me. Made a right tit of myself......

It’s a free shot from 12 yards. Firmly struck in the corner will not be saved.

Le Tissier had a good technique. His default was to go to the right so keeper’s left side. If he saw the keeper move to that side he would just whip it into the other corner at the last second. He backed himself to score by putting it in the corner firmly if the keeper didn’t move. He was pretty good at it even if the goalkeepers must have realised his technique!

No need to overcomplicate it!

I can't say I ever made the World Cup but I did always fancy myself as a penalty taker and I was a placer.

There is something being to be said for your smash Phil but without checking - no doubt I'll be crucified by the geeks - I'd say that your good smashers like say Shearer are probably on or around 80% and I'm thinking your good placers would be nearer 90%.

Another thing, given that we are told that Qatar has no time for homosexuality, surely all these players with their silly run ups are risking prosecution ?

What can be more gay than Lewandowski's silly run ups ?

To be fair you may have a point may 12 year old lad has scored all 6 this season so far and hasn't smashed one yet, he obviously doesn't listen to his dad

He could be the next Gareth Bale !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Seriously though, If your lad's banging in the goals and enjoying his football it's all good.

Funny isn’t it, I remember when penalties were first suggested as a way to decide cup ties and there was outrage, now I’m almost hoping for penalties.

Le Tissier was rather unique though, not many could strike a football like he could - from anywhere!

Hate all this stuttering & pratting about , I was always bought up thinking (maybe wrongly) that the penalty taker was not allowed to dummy etc . Some of the penalty taking has been appalling considering they are meant to be world class footballers at the top of their game

Looking at the keeper rather than the ball. No wonder they mishit it.
