Pilley’s sentence……

It’s just something I thought was worth discussing on a boring Monday

My view (having read both cases sentencing remarks) is that Pilleys sentence was absolute top whack but I doubt will be appealable but the sentence for the lorry driver is way too low

Pilley did everything possible to alienate the judge, he should have done everything possible to avoid a trial and do some sort of plea bargain- he might have for away with 4/5 years

The lorry drivers actions or lack of action seriously contributed to those 39 deaths yet he’ll be out of prison in 8/9 year which doesn’t seem right

also the ring leader who knew the risks go 12 years

And, to clarify, the guy jailed today was responsible for the onward transportation in the UK and so didn’t do any of the driving in this particular case. The driver to Zeebrugge got 18 years and the guy who collected the container and drove to Essex and found the bodies got 13 years and 4 months.

Edit to add that the two identified as the ringleaders got 20 and 27 years.

Out of interest, what do you think he'd have got if the migrants hadn't died, and they'd simply been discovered once they got to Dover?

to run concurrent so 13 years so out in 6.5 years he committed a criminal offence for monetary gain
also ring leader who knew the risk gets 12 years and he knew what he was doing i stand by my statement money means more than lives in this country

The half of a sentence = release is not always applicable for sentences over 7yrs.
Again if the judge has specified a tariff, but there is the potential to serve 2/3rd's.

WHAT ABOUT 175 YEARS. which is the sentence handed down to the guy in a FLORIDA jail who was stabbed quite seriously only last night. HE was convicted of sex abuse. with teen athletes. Think i have got that right. correct me if i am wrong.

It's an interesting thread.

I gave evidence against my dad a few years back (hence my kids having no idea he exists)

He got 18½ years, and that was after my impact statement asked for clemency if it was in the gift of the judge.

Even now, I'm shocked at the length of the sentence but there are guidelines for a reason and it ensures the raw emotion is taken out of it.

The judicial system generally get its right.

about the Boeing bunch with the 2 737s that went down 350 souls lost and not even a court case.. Again nawt to do with the pilley thing but the Americans do like to see themselves as the guardian's of world justice.... Mmmm
