Grimmy - 7/10 made some important saves but not really tested

Connolly 8/10 thought he looked better than Gabriel to be honest, showed great character to edge in front of their defender for the goal. Always a solid performance.
Marvin 7/10 few sloppy passes but should always be in the first 11
Williams 7/10 did his job well
Thompson 8/10 looks quality

Carey - 4/10 poor, not sure what he offered, the game seemed to skip him by, wasn't quick to close people down, Dougall should return.
Florini - 9/10 dictated the game, always looking for a forward pass and always creating space to ask for the ball. Could be signing of the season
Virtue - 6/10 quiet game, did well on the cross for the goal but always going backwards of sideways

Bowler - 9/10 always trying to make things happen, has that bit of special quality, should of scored, hope we can hang on to him
Madine - 4/10 plays like he has a fridge on his back, I'm certain he can't actually run, no goal threat
Yates - 7/10 some flashes and always looks determined but he looked knackered after 30 minutes, not great defensively.

Bowler 8 (my man of the match)

Grimshaw 7 - good saves but I wish he wouldn't try and dribble past an attacker - nearly got caught out
Connelly 8 - a great player- should be the mudfield enforcer though
Marvin 6 - Distribution was shaky, but many good headers
Williams 7 - looks solid- will get better
Thompson 8.5 - Great performance both defensively and going forward
Virtue 4 - Never rated him, and his performance today did nothing to change that
Florini 8.5 - Superb 1st half when he had the run o9f the pitch. Shackled a bit in the 2nd hald
Carey 5 - Very average performance. I don't think him and Virtue should be on the pitch together
Yates 7.5- Great performance from Jerry. He looked very fast today, and ran for everything
Madine 7 - I thought Gary had one of his better games. Held the ball up well and brought his teammates into play a number of times. Also made at least 3 important defensive headers
Bowler 8.5 - If he does go, he must have put a few hundred thousand more on his fee today. He terrorised the Reading left back

Also a special mention for Dougall. When he came on we suddenly had some bite in midfield. I've criticised him a lot for backpassing, but there is still a role for him in this team

Decent team performance, all three new lads made us stronger I thought, which is really encouraging. However, that midfield of Carey, Fiorini and Virtue is very inexperienced at this level, and I can't see that being the regular trio.

No way was Virtue a 4,he was helping to drive us forward and will get regular game time this season.
He has only played a handful of games at Championship level but is not out of his comfort zone. Agree that Dougall will also be an important player in midfield, and 5 subs will utilise our full squad

Carey was utterly dreadful. Not entirely convinced by Fiorini thought he was excellent first 20 then mediocre. The rest were ok, Bowler and Thompson excellent, but its central midfield where we are desperately short. If that’s our midfield three for the season it’s going to be a long one, hopefully Appleton can get a quality midfield signing in soon.

Good performances all over the pitch today, I thought Grimmy could have caught the ball a couple of times instead of punching it, but that’s being picky.

Dominated first 20. Even tho after that we weren’t amazing I thought we still had 3/4 very good chances and it should of been more comfortable.

Reading were very poor so it’s a big 3 points .

Are all these score Vs who we played? I hope they are because if we are honest we played for the first 20 minutes and after that we were on the back foot against a very poor Reading side, who to be honest deserved something out of that game over the 90 minutes.
Very worried for the rest of the season and I can see nothing bar a fight to avoid relagation after that game.
Hoping Appleton has more to offer with his coaching skills because it was bleeding obvious we needed more bite in the midfield from 25 minutes onward.

Agreed, if Reading were a better side we would have lost today.

But they weren't and we didn't.

Apparently if my auntie had bollocks she'd be my uncle, (although presumably she could still identify as an auntie)
Strange comment, we weren't that good, a fair result would have been a draw and Reading are shite.

The whole of the 2nd half we were on the back foot, they had some extremely close chances.

That was by no means a comfortable win, your bias is clouding your judgement.
I was sat in the South and I can remember one decent chance, not a series of extremely close chances.

By contrast we had three golden chances and a couple of others in the same half.

That isn't bias. It's fact.

Grimshaw 6.5. Needs to work on distribution
Connelly 8.
Big Marv 6 Needs to work on passing
Williams 7
Thompson 8
Virtue 6
Florini 8. First half fantastic. Charlie Adam clone
Carey 5
Madine 7. One of his better games
Yates 7. Looking more confident
Bowler 9. So unlucky not to score. My mom.
Ref 5. A bit better than useless

Tangerine Army 9. Bearing in mind a lot were on their Jollies
Away support 2
Chips and curry sauce. 8

Overall day 8... Considering its the first day of the season and still work in progress.
Onwards and upwards. UTMP!

Fiorini seemed to tire along with a few other’s he will get match fit soon, I’m sure it’s the same for other teams.

We hit the post and had three glorious chances to extend the lead in the 2nd half.
They had one shot saved, blazed one over and generally played tippy tappy across our box.
Hardly being on the back foot was it?🤷

Virtue 4
Carey 4
Both poor today. I don’t think we can afford to have them both in the same starting line up week in, week out. No wonder we tried to spend a near record fee on a new CM.
Fiorini played well for the first 20/25 mins.
He may be better with a more solid base behind him, comeback Dougall and Stewart

these marks are generally always influenced by how you rate a player. To give Madine just a marking of 4 makes your post unworthy of any further comment.
just a rating of today's match, if you can't accept anyone else's opinion that's your own bias coming through.

Stewart would be great with Fiorini in that middle three.

Cheese & Onion Pie 1/10 - after a massive disappointment last season I thought I would give C&O another chance. Bad move, if anything this pies career has nose dived, completely dry and tasteless. Inedible so took it back and swapped for a…

Meat & Potato pie 6.5/10 - much better but still not brilliant.. This pie could make a reappearance this season if I’m hungry enough.

As for the players my picks were

Florini 8/10 - wow this lad had some first half, looks to be some player. Faded a bit in second half but think this was due to our style of play changing, think he will be at his best when we are pushing forward.

Bowler 9/10 - unplayable at times, yesterday showed just how important he is to our team. Unfortunately he is probably irreplaceable

Williams 8/10 - solid, solid, solid. Don’t care if he has a tattoo of a sheep holding a flag or of Jon Parkin eating a baby on his ass, he will do for me

Grimshaw worried me a bit. He didn't command his area and stayed on his line too much. There were two occasions, second half when he should have claimed instead of waiting for others to clear.

Tend to disagree about your assessment of Reading there. They overran us in midfield, Ince and the other lad on the right were threatening and several of the balls played across the box only needed a toe-poke to convert them. A better finishing team would have made us pay yesterday. That said, we did have some excellent chances that could have put it to bed.
