Points in bag, or games in hand?

Well, we are currently just in the top half of the Championship Table on the first day of the new year. Normally I would be quite pleased with this situation.

However, having played more games than anyone else in the Championship (26), I'm still quite nervous.
5 teams below us have only played 22 games, 3 teams 23, and 4 teams 24.

I know that not all teams below us can get maximum points, but If we have a poor run, like we have just had, ( two home wins against teams promoted with us last season, and a lot of defeats) watching other teams results as they catch up is going to be interesting.

I'd always take points over games in hand.

It's frustrating as we could and possibly should have another 4 points from Christmas/New Year.

Anyway, I hope that at some point we get an extra few days rest at the business end of the season because we are they only team in the Championship and possibly English football to fulfill all our fixtures.

realistically most of the bottom 6 teams are prob going to be in bottom 6 by the end of the season, unless they spend a lot of money during the transfer window. We prob need to get to 42-43 points, so another 9-10, to be sure.

The other teams below us have to win. Three point have helped but those extra six points would have been far better at this stage. Unfortunately if we didn’t earn that pen it might well have been one point.

15 points from 20 games should be enough to keep us up. With the squad and manager we have that shouldn’t be a problem at all.
No nerves, worries or anxiety at all!

Points - except in 1977-78, when we were relegated while on the beach.
But the EFL will insist on all games being played by the day we play Peterborough in our last game. They have broadcast commitments in terms of the play offs and have to meet them. If COVID was to intervene more generally, then we would still finish with a 12 match final day.

I imagine you’ll be changing your username in the morning!

Probably should do I am sure.

Just out of curiosity though were you?
It was a quite incredible and in many ways ridiculously unlucky collapse, and with a very good team, and it was 30 years before we got back to the same level!.

I don’t think I have been able to look at a league table the same way since! I am pretty sure we won’t go down this time though!

Yes I was only a little lad but will never forget my Nan telling me the result from Cardiff the morning after. I suppose it is possible but it would be a cruel twist of fate for lightning to strike twice.

I am banking on Derby, Barnsley and Peterborough not to let us down this time, but after what happened last season and if we get a couple of decent signings soon who knows? A lot closer to the play offs than the drop, but happy with survival.

Points all day long when people do the maths how much teams could get with games in hand their forgetting that teams will take points off each other.

Points everytime. Its the gap and the points per game average to keep your eye on.1978 was a falling knife this isnt.We have just taken 3 points off 2 principal sides below us Peterborough was critical.

Using ppg we could at worst drop 3 places in the table currently and remember for the gap to significantly close upnto 3rd bottom they need to rack up the wins.Wont be easy playing 2 games a week week in week out.Enjoy

Points
All we have to do is focus on achieving a Points total that will see us safe, and not worry about the other teams with games in hand. They mean nothing if you are not winning. If you are looking at promotion games in hand are important if your form is good, but if the aim is to stay in this division, then Points matters more.

Always has to be points.

No use stressing about what others around you are doing, just try to maintain some good form, and our place in the table will take care of itself.

Definitely points without a doubt, that's why we had to play today to avoid a fixture pile up. 3 points from 3 games over Christmas might not seem very good but in the context of the season so far we are doing well. Carry on as we are as a club we will be sound as a pound as they say!

Nervous of what? We're nowhere near to being in a relegation battle, we'll finish above Huddersfield and will make a run to the playoffs.

Feel free to bookmark.

I think (and hope) that Derby will stay up.

If we get 3 points every 3 games ..... we stay up

I hope you're right; of there was ever a club and set of fans who 'deserve' to see the rewards which come with playing in the top flight it's us.

2021 was great; hopefully 2022 tops it 🤞

Yep, works both ways, teams will get injuries and poor results having to catch up games.
We won’t go down, just as we won’t go up. If we can finish above PKE, that’s a big bonus.
Agree & if you go off the last 4 games we’ve averaged 1.5 points per game so the 4 games in hand that the knobs have would mean they have to equal or better that to go above us, that’s them playing 2 games a week for a while with a bigger chance of injuries & the players being as rusty as their ground
Points in the bag all day long for me

I am staggered by the worry of so many of them on here Wiz. This time last season after 26 games we were in 39 points and we only just missed out on automatic. We are 6 points off the play offs having played 2 more games.

A couple of shrewd signings and get some players back fit then surely we should be looking to get as close to the play offs as possible, I’m sure that’s what Critch and the players will be thinking. There is no way we will be relegated this season, bookmark that too.

Points on the board always.
If, & a massive if at that, say Peterborough won all their games in hand they would still effectively 6 points off us (doubt they would make up 20 odd goal difference in 3 games).
3rd bottom this year may struggle to get much past 40 points.
