We have plenty to go at so who do you think is Pools best ever goalkeeper?.

George Wood for me ahead of John Burridge.

This will be a generational choice to some extent and I'm sure my father would have opted for Tony Waiters or George Farm to highlight the point.

Gordon West would also be worthy of a mention

As for the years since the late 70s I would plump for Gilks Hesford and Maxwell if this season pans out for him at this level.

Under the radar and better than was given credit for at the time i would probably side with Bob Ward.

Your father would have been right.Tony Waiters for me.

Banksy is the best I've seen, followed by Maxwell and then Gilks.

A bit harsh on Gilks perhaps as Maxwell hasn't faced PL keepers, yet, but Maxwell has been out of this world for the past few months.

Melvyn Capleton. Grace, style and a winning smile.

Very hard for me to call between Banks and Gilks. I'd probably side with Banks but that's probably as much a memories thing as anything else. Maxwell is definitely pushing himself into contention.

So far as I know I am not your father( perish the thought :) ) but he is right and though George Farm was my first `pool goalie and had a high reputation( despite his performance in the `53 final) he was one of the few of that team who refused to sign my autograph book(miserable bugger) so that rules him out.Waiters and West were both outstanding but Waiters with more England caps just edges it. Wood and then Burridge would come next.

Am I showing my age here?

It is a generational thing. I missed Farm and Waiters was around for my only match of the 1966/67 season against Sheff Utd but he didn't play, Alan Taylor did.
When Budgie and Wood were playing I preferred Budgie - when he was playing. When Wood took the jersey for a while, I preferred him.
Gilks was good in 2009/10 and before his injury in the Prem. He came back too soon but given the frightening prospect of Kingson continuing it was understandable.
For me a goalie needs a good defence and, conversely, a defence gains confidence from a good keeper.
My answer?....can't decide.

Hart has to be the best by results/international status BUT….he wasn’t ours.
Delighted with Maxwell and to be rewarded with the captaincy speaks volumes for his character too.

Tony Waiter's ,followed by George wood,John burridge,(to be fair though we've had son great keepers recently too banks, gilks etc & Maxwell is up there with them).

Tony Waiters for me, Gordon West only played 30 games for Blackpool and joined Everton as a teenager. For sheer entertainment it was Budgie for me but Harry Thomson had his moments. Loved the 60s when the England team was announced Number 1 Tony Waiters, Number 2 Jimmy Armfield (captain).

By those metrics, our best keeper is the only one who has 90 international caps for Ghana, was keeper of the tournament at the 2008 African cup of nations, runner up at African cup of nations 2010, World Cup quarter finalist, and was victim of his wife summoning spirits that ruined his career and made him impotent.

As the OP says, what a choice. We have such a strong tradition of quality keepers going back way before I was born.

Sadly never saw either Wood or Burridge, Hesford was our keeper when I started. And a proud time to know that a Blackpool player was being selected for international honours, when a u23 cap meant something.

Gary Pearce. If he wasn't that special then he certainly had the game of his life when we beat City in 84/85.

Of the ones I've seen have to go with Gilks, as he played at the highest standard and still looked as good as previous divisions. Closely followed by Banks.

I can’t speak for George Farm and the like. I’m sure he was good or he wouldn’t have been in a top side like we were back then; Banks saved things no other keeper I’ve seen at Blackpool would have done. Gilks was class and I have no doubt we would have stayed up had he stayed fit. Max is looking great, but if pushed, I’d have to say Gilks gets my vote.

Eric Nixon.

I tried to be frivolous and witty but just typing his name has made me angry so the joke is on me...

😡😡😡

Toss up between Waiters & Wood.
Both excellent keepers.
Always loved George Farm, both as a Keeper and a person.
Not far behind the first two.
IMO

John Burridge for me. Chatted every game, mainly to ask what the time was, every few minutes 🤣

Budgie for me of those I've seen. A real character and still going strong.

George Wood second

Matty McGilks in post Prem era

George Wood was when i started watching he was brilliant, Ian Hesford was brilliant and tailed off, in the modern era (not including loans) it would be Gilks for me, Banks next.

I remember when Gilks was absolutely dog shit and couldn't get in the team due to chubs. Let in a 35 yard daisy cutter straight at him, can't remember who it was against.
One morning he must have woke up and just realised he was actually shit bleeding hot!

Ian Hesfords dad Bob is the only man to save a hatrick of penalties at Wembley. Taught me English at Monty, sad Huddersfield **.
Looked a lot like Jaffa the hut😬

Without sounding all PNE (where David Beckham was apparently their greatest ever player 🤣), you'd have include Joe Hart in there for his role in getting us promoted to the Championship in 2007.
