Portsmouth v Blackpool Official Matchday Thread 20.02.21

A thoroughly organised and professional display. Every player did well and put in a shift. Stand out players being Gabriel and Dougall who were both very classy. The goal deserves a mention for 2 reasons, one it summed up the best of Jerry who rolled his defender, stayed on his feet and produced quick feet and a stunning finish. The other reason being the ref, who did very well to allow play to carry on. I was critical of his weak first half but he had a much more even 2nd. Finally a well done to Critchley who picked the right 11 and made the perfect substitutions, I'm sure it'll make the long trip home all the sweeter.

Any coach worth his salt will tell you. 1-0 is the best win, it shows the whole team have performed. Onward and upward

It's an unexpected win. A bit uninspiring at times, but credit for 100% effort, resilience and a brilliant goal. Hopefully the return of Hamilton and Madine will give us more up top. Up the Pool.
I bet you were gutted Nigel, a few weeks ago you very quick to twist the stats from our form guide. So how many wins is that from our last 5 games and how many points from the last 16 games? 😆

You should note that I've given them due credit for today. They need to keep it going now. If Critchley had signed better than Simms, Embleton and Stewart in January I'd feel more confident.
This calendar year is more to the point P7 W4 D1 L2.

Gabriel was brilliant, he reduced the opposition winger to not even trying to get passed him. Husband played a big part. Mitchell adds a new dimension with his pace and movement, I’d like to see him get a run in the side. Virtue looked off the pace when he came on I thought. Defended well and the goal was a great bag. Just need to improve our attacking set pieces

Shove your credit up your arse . Happiest when were struggling like a few others on here. Constant negatively does my head in. Best ever time to be a Blackpool fan , just enjoy the ride.

Taking it back over a longer period, we’ve only lost 4 out of the last 17!
I am sure an abnormally high number of those games were away.

Best ever time to be a Blackpool fan? Mid table in league 1. How old are you 12?

Gabriel - what a player he’s turning out to be MOM for me amongst some sterling performances
Yes he grew into the game and covered a lot of ground in areas of the pitch you might not expect to see him
I do however think that he still lacks a bit of self confidence. He gets into good forward positions and I'm screamng at him to cross the ball or to carrying on surging forward and he plays the ball backwards.
But he's a Championship player in the making and definitely one that should be on Critchy's shopping list.

I know we're all high as kites after the win but do you sense there's too much playing by drilled tactics? I mean, we were in a great position attacking from the right wing but because there wasn't anything 'on' it was passed back to go across the defence to build again up the left. Can't we at least create something new when we're in a good position?

I thought both our full backs showed something different today.positionally both were improved.Infact the entire back four are in with a shout.
Grumpy Insider here but I was slightly disappointed with Garbs today but on the positive side he was another cog in a great team performance.

Don’t be so bloody negative.

Oh don’t be so precious you big girls blouse. Football is entertainment and everyone has a different view. My post was a gag and for the record I’m not a massive fan of Yates or Critchley and apologies if that’s not allowed nowadays. Good goal though I’ll admit that 👍
It's certainly not funny.

That's a great 3 points, we were the better team first 15 minutes and last 25 minutes, but we reduced them to absolutely nothing apart from the great goal line block from Husband. I thought the back 4 were excellent, Kaikai MOM, Yates never gives up and I am glad we have him. I thought Elliot and Mitchell made the difference with their attacking creative football. They have to be in with a shout of starting on Tuesday. We don't need 2 defensive midfielders, so not sure how he will choose.
I know what you mean about the 2 defensive midfielders but the problem is we keep winning playing that system. Don't fix what ain't broke.

Great away win and I think Dougall and Stewart are a big factor in that because they provide a protective screen in front of the back four. I think Critch got his team selection and subs spot on today by putting Ballard back in and replacing Thorniley with Husband. If Husband hadn't put in that goal line clearance I think we would have struggled to come back.

That is true and it is paramount in the incredible numbers of clean sheets we have, we just need to liven up the attack a bit, I mean tactically so we keep the clean sheets but score more goals.

When we play this way (and we've done it a lot recently with the players we have available), and sit back and soak up the pressure with the two holding midfielders, I can't help think these are the games where Hamilton would have a field day. What a massive shame he's been out so long, not that we're doing badly without him of course.

Obviously CJ will add positivity wide on the right and Madine is better than Simms but other than that I'd still stick with Dougall and Stewart.

Defence excellent 9 out of 10. Midfield 7 out of 10 quite even on the day. Attack 6 out of 10 and would have been lower other than for Yates clinical strike. Simms well out of his depth.

While the match was in progress I thought you had morphed into 62 yrs and counting with your negativity. Oh also disagree with you on Simms he looks a good prospect and far more potent than Woodburn or Kemp.

yeh thats ok. I just think he was a bit more positionally aware today playing a role thats not really where he wants to play and he showed good discipline to do his defensive job more than trying to get forwards.

Didn't comment whilst the match was in progress. That was my post match verdict.

I think Simms has some way to go, but puts more in than Woodburn did. I still Critchley should have gone for a more experienced / proven striker in January.

I think that's right especially considering that Madine is out. We need that streetwise striker if you know what I mean. That said, fortunately we have a striker in Yates that has that turn of speed and a bit of trickery that can get a goal from nothing, like today and against Northampton. That's key when you're creating next to nothing for most of the game.
We're quite hard to judge at the moment, we have significant problems in the goalscoring department but we're so defensively sound that it isn't mattering quite as much as it should.

Spot on, plus we still lack creativity and goals from midfield.
