Poveda

Got to wonder why he wasn’t getting a chance, madness really, wasted half a season.

The key now is not to play Gaz, as he limits our movement and ability to get at teams. We’ve now got so many creative players we must get it in the ground.
We’ve had this time and time again though.

I remember when people thought Lavery and Yates would be a lethal partnership.

You always need a Gaz UNLESS we sign a seriously good midfielder who can give the forward proper service.

Seriously?

Nothing new from me, Gaz is over-used and it limits our movement and creativity. Not a criticism of Gaz, he needs to be used more sparingly.

Deadly serious.

Madine is probably the most intelligent player we possess. Your post literally suggested the 'key' for the rest of the season was 'not playing him'
- I agree that with more quality in the front 3 then we should see Yates start as the 9 more often - but if you recall games like Coventry or when Gaz came on against Burnley - he's more than capable of playing football on the floor - he is, in fact, pretty very good at it and you get more out of Madine by playing football than you do twatting it aimlessly at him.

I'm guessing we will be starting with Bowler, Poveda and Hamilton or Rodgers, will Madine have the pace and movement to make the most of what they offer?
Would it be like replacing one of the members of a string quartet with an enthusiastic bloke banging a kettle drum?
That just wouldn't work!
There is a place for Madine or somebody like him but I'd prefer it to be from the bench when needed.

The point is that at times he will create for them - not the other way round. I sometimes wonder if people see the same Gary Madine I do.

Knocking it high and long to Madine to create is a lottery, there are better ways to play the game.
I'm not disputing that he has something to offer but personally I'd prefer it to be plan B.

Poveda fed off Gaz's knock downs last game. Jerry doesn't make those. What's your point caller?
Point is we scored 4 and no headers. We had great movement and were fluid, skilful and pacy going forward.

Another point is, we’ve tried all season to feed off Gaz’s knockdowns and it’s been turgid. We are in the bottom 3. We have more about us than playing off Gaz.

I’m not knocking Gaz, he just needs to be used more sparingly.

The double one-two between Poveda and Madine last week was turgid?

I'm only playing the role given to me. Prime imperative - defend wor Gaz

I said pre-season that Gaz should be plan B. Gary Gamechanger. Making him play every single minute every week is tantamount to cruelty.

I maintain though, that you get more out of Madine playing football than you do playing long ball.

If CJ was fit he should play on the wing before any striker I agree but we now have a couple of options in every position
CJ has his faults, poor touch at times, but he has blistering pace, can provide and has done from crosses for others to score, can score some goals himself.

He scares defenders to death with his pace.

Whether he starts or not he is a useful option in our squad.

A lad came on for us second half today and fitted that description. Number 12.
Dougall in form can do the job up to a point, lovely pass from him today for Hamiltons goal, might be time for Patino to spend a bit of time on the bench.
Just not convinced that any two from Dougall, Patino or Carey is quite good enough. Another centre midfield option would be a big plus.

Tell you who he reminded me of today as he was running at and skipping by the Forest defenders down the centre today - Tony Green !!

Incredibly exciting to watch
This is exactly what was said by a mate of mine in the second half. I have to agree ability wise there are real similarities. However, he has a long way to go to match Tony's composure and humility!

Great observation tho'.

No disagreement from me. He's been under used in the circumstances though. In my opinion.

He’s had a few good games this season but rogers looks like he can play he didn’t have long to show what he can do but had one run at them and I think he might be useful

I i think a better man manager would have sorted the Poveda thing a lot sooner. Surely.
We have no idea of the depth of problems earlier in the season. Suffice to say, we are not the first to have a problem. It seems the player eventually gets his head round things.

Said before a ball was kicked this season that if GM is our Plan A, main focal point, outlet, however you want to put it... then we'd end up relegated. I recall you saying similar. To be frank, it's bollocks that it's taken Apples so long to see the obvious.

Turned up in a Rolls Royce to training late and acted billy big bollocks
If true that might just be immaturity and it needed stamping on
Either way I think we now have one of the most exciting players in the Championship
Add Bowler and Rodgers with the right centre forward and cover and 🍊💥
Add in an experienced championship CDM and that’ll do for me!

I saw him drive off in a Range Rover.

Surely the point is that suddenly from looking worryingly like a relegation team, we now look like a squad with exciting options in most of the key positions. Not "X is crap" and "Y is dogshit" and all that drivel? We know the owners are serious about holding on to our status and we've signed players who get the fans out of their seats. We're on the up. It's a reboot.

One other point. I noticed Kenny went down the tunnel pretty quickly at full time today. Hope he's not being moved on.

Give some credit to Appleton in turning the situation around. The Poveda for most of the first half of the season was on his way back to Leeds in Jan, that could still happen if somebody makes a bid for him but hopefully we will have Poveda on loan for the rest of this season,

The forward options available to Appleton are very exciting for the rest of this season — Poveda, Bowler, Rogers, CJ, Madine, Lavery Yates and Beesley. If only the same was true of our midfield options.

He's been brilliant

Credit to Appleton for getting the lads head straight and playing him as a 10
Appleton this season has also had a positive effect on Yates (10 goals so far this season and apparently Jerry is now worth £3M to £5M in the transfer market), Thorniley, Connolly, CJ, Madine especially since he became captain, Ekpiteta since Appleton took the captaincy away. Rogers couldn’t wait to rejoin Appleton and Bowler was very positive as well. I keep hearing Appleton has lost the dressing room, which dressing room is that as it cannot be Blackpool’s dressing room as the players have never worked harder, despite the results, and the team spirit is excellent. Hopefully this result today plus the addition of Bowler and a few others will turnaround our season, the Manager, the Blackpool players and the Blackpool fans deserve it.

Top post 👍🏻🧡

Tony Green …….. my best Blackpool player after Alan Suddick !

Poveda looked up for it today and played well ……… what did let him down (in my opinion) was on about 20 minutes he got clattered and ended up on the astroturf near the southwest corner …… rolled around and rubbed his calf until he realised the game was going on ……. that’s OK on the pitch but not off if !
Did well !
I enjoyed the game !

Not sure I agree. Appleton has played Beesley on the wing instead CJ and that is simply wrong. Hopefully today Appleton has learned a lot and these stupid team selections are a thing of the past.
Those options were all he had at the time. Poveda playing behind the central striker makes him so much more effective than stuck out wide. That was Appleton's switch, by the way.

We've tried all season and Gaz has knocked them down when there's been noone anywhere near him. Poveda switches to play behind him and suddenly we look a lot better. Who would have thought that getting near our best player at holding up and bringing others in would be successful?

The thought did cross my mind that he knows this is the month where he can move if Leeds were to recall him.

Yes which I have given him credit for. To say Poveda would be less effective on the wing than strikers, for example Beesley, is bizarre. Both CJ and Poveda would be more effective than Yates.

Yates should be upfront instead of Madine as today proved.

Not sure about this.

Madines my player of the season so far, with his hold up play the wingers will thrive

When has it been successful?

We shouldn’t aspire to be a long ball team with Madine holding balls up. Yates will make runs in behind, put pressure on defenders and create chances from nothing.

Surely after today it’s obvious? Yes Madine is still valued but as the poster above says, he should be used in certain moments.

Point is, we don’t need to knock it up to be held up. Today we’ve scored 4 with fluid play without knocking the ball up. We need to play to our strengths and it’s plainly obvious we have an abundance of creative, skilful and pacy players.

Completely agree. Absolute no brainer for me. We just haven’t been using 4-3-3 very well. In an ideal world you want attacking full backs and somebody who will work the space and make the runs upfront. We have been far too easy to play against. Hopefully with the new players and Poveda like a new signing, we can do things much better from now on. In my opinion, Yates simply has to start upfront after scoring three today.

If this is the kind of performance we're going to see from now on, and the role we'll be playing him in going forward, I'd be making his transfer a permanent one if it were at all possible. He's single-handedly transformed this team to something completely unrecognisable. Him and Bowler in the same team is a very exciting prospect.

The one concern I have about Poveda is the possibility of being recalled by Leeds to bolster their squad or to be loaned out to a promotion seeking Championship club.

I was having the Pele Ronaldo Messi Maradona debate with Chopper McPhee last week and we disagreed over Ronaldo and Messi but then he said, "but Tony Green was probably better than all of them!" And I thought, yeah. 😄
I presume this must be another Chopper McPhee that I don`t know of as the real one got dementia and died in 2015?
