Q. Re our long run since an automatic promotion šŸ¤”

Our last automatic promotion was 1984/85 - many moons have indeed passed since then my Seasider friends ā€¦.

Have m(any) other members of the EFL 92 had an equivalent or longer drought without any automatic promotions .. ?

Not sure how to phrase this question in Google so thought Iā€™d consult you knowledgeable lot ā€¦

My late good friend was a Coventry lad, used to ask a good question - who's the only team in my lifetime not to have a top 6 finish (he was born 1964).

They've spoilt that one now, so maybe an answer of a number of years good enough to be counted no longer exists, in the clubs outside the top flight?

Prem teams canā€™t really be promoted from the prem can they ā€¦. šŸ™„

Yes Cov until they were League One champions in 2020 - didnā€™t know they were once known as The Swingers ā€¦ šŸ˜®

There must be some other clubs (bar some long established top flight teams) without an automatic in the last 38 odd seasons - maybe not šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

It has also been a fairly long time since we won a league title (outside of the war years). After winning the Second Division in 1929/30 we haven't won a division since. That's quite a statistic when you think that we spent the longest period on record at the top of the First Division.

I'm pretty sure there will be dozens of teams (EFL past and Present) who have never automatic promotion since the playl-offs were introduced in the late 80's. You can only count from then and exclude the Prem who have no promotion as otheres have mentioned. Somebody else can research this so I don't have to.

Sorry but Everton have been relegated twice in modern times and Liverpool once. However, neither have been relegated from the PL.šŸ‘
I was just guessing and I'd add Spurs as well I think. I hate looking up football stats as everyone thinks footy was invented with the premier league.

Close are Tranmere, last automatic was 88-89ā€™, three play off wins since then.
It will take a bit of trawling through the stats to check our record out Bandagem but it would be interesting to know - just curious ā€¦. canā€™t really remember us being top of a division during a season for a sustained period of time, sure for the odd game from time to time, but not often ā€¦

95/96 under Big Sam. 2nd for a long time and seemingly nailed on for automatic
Prem season, top for an hour or so

Youā€™re right about Arsenal, they have never been relegated, so they havenā€™t been promoted.
Also we're never actually promoted in the first place. Were voted into an expanded Div 1. Shamelessly bribed their way into it...

Should be relegated really.

Factamundo.

Thatā€™s what Iā€™m asking.

Just had a search through and checked out the following ā€¦

Bury Orient Peteborough Oxford Crewe Accrington Brentford Mansfield Northampton Wrexham Stockport The Dead End Carlisle Stevenage Notts County Exeter Crawley Portsmouth Wycombe Port Vale Walsall Doncaster Cheltenham Colchester Gillingham Lincoln Grimsby Cambridge Burton all had automatics

ā€¦ā€¦ Wimbledon + Salford + Barrow + Fleetwood + Newport + Morecambe (only lower leagues but still automatics) ā€¦ā€¦

Still not found one šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø never mind dozens ā€¦. šŸ¤£

UTP šŸ‘ āš½ļø - but only through the play offs šŸ‘šŸ‘šŸ‘šŸ¤£šŸ¤£šŸ¤£

I hope you arenā€™t suggesting that a huge wad of money buys success or special treatment or influence in the upper echelons of football hierarchy. Tut tut, you should be ashamed of yourself for even entertaining such thoughts.šŸ˜‰

Rochdale played in the bottom division (the 3rd, then the 4th) from 1921 to 1969. That's 48 years without any promotion. They then followed that with another 36 years till their next promotion....

Even though they are not currently in the 92 Rochdale were promoted automatically from Tier 4 on 2 separate occasions since 2010 mate ā€¦

Where did I say they weren't?
See what u mean TD - apologies old son - the Dale certainly had long runs without any automatic promotions.

Iā€™ve not found a current club topping our current 38 years though ā€¦ might be on to something here, what do you think ?

It's a great question!

That's why I went to Rochdale as I can't think of anyone who beats us in this respect and I knew Rochdale were famous for not getting promoted at all for ages so they're possibly the all time answer...

Barrow were in the bottom division from 1921 to 1967 before getting automatic promotion to the third division so we're a few seasons off the record.

In the premiership year after year, sold out state of the art stadium, European jaunts year after year, occasional trophies, no realistic chance of relagation, some of the best players in the world.....need I say more.
Iā€™ll bet 80%, at least, of the rest would swap with them.

Barnsley haven't been top of a table at all since 2006. We're not in the top 20.

That only deals in data up to 2016... Barnsley went up automatically in 18-19 and were only 3 points behind Luton so it's a reasonable bet that at some point they topped the table.
