R.I.P. Peter Bonetti

RIP “The Cat” great keeper but got slaughtered for his mishap in the 70 World Cup, letting a shot go under his body to allow West Germany back into the game, he never really got over it!

At fault for two if you ask me. If Banks hadn't been poisoned we'd have won that game.

RIP The cat. Couldn’t argue about the first goal v Germany, but Seelers header was the sort of fluke that teams get when it’s their day.

Agreed, it's sad if people remember him for just one game, I think maybe Sir Alf takes a lot of blame for taking off Bobby Charlton as we were cruising to the semi's until that moment, to be fair there is no way we would have beaten an outstanding Brazilian team featuring the likes of Jarzinho, Gerson, Rivelino and Pele in any case. Bonetti was a brilliant keeper who in his prime would walk in to the England team right now.

We had of course already played Brazil in the group stage and lost 1-0 to possibly the greatest international team in history.I remember in particular Bobby Moore having a great game marking Pele but despite a great team performance they were just too good for us and far too good to all others including Italy in the final.

Bonetti was known as the cat for his great agility but we greatly missed the best keeper in the world against the Germans and there have always been questions asked about just what caused Gordon Banks` food poisoning on the day of the match.

Before my time and I generally can't be done with Brazil love-ins but one of the goals they scored in the 1970 final - all the passing and drilled in by the full back - was amazing.

Pele's final pass may have been simple but the weight, one of my favourite goals.

That's my exact memories to Levi.
As he's the only one in the nets, that's always the life of the goaly isn't it? If he makes a save he's brilliant, if he makes 1 mistake - he's lost us the game. So unfair really, but that's reality.
RIP 'The Cat'.

Too true Brett, on a lighter note he once said ” I’ve seen that goal so many times, and one of these days I’m going to save it! Bless him.

R I P the cat great service to club and country , thoughts with family, a time to all think about each other
Indeed. What a great keeper and part of the legendary 1970 Cup Final which was the first to go to a replay for a long time.
One of the Esso World Cup coin collection players for the older fans on here, and definitely one of the better keepers from the new generation that emerged from that era.

Norman Hunter still poorly in hospital at the mo and it seems the heroes of my childhood are being culled by this terrible virus.

Didn't he cost us two goals against Germany? I remember him playing at Bloomfield Road and was getting stick from the South Paddock and being called the Mexico fumbler. I thought he always had a touch of class about him. RIP.

On reading the op I thought “I know that name; from the dim and distant past”.

As you get older I find the names come first and the memories take a while to catch up.
