Rafa wins Australian Open

Yes he`s extraordinary quite incredible in fact. A heart the size of a lion`s is an understatement. Juust edged ahead of Federer and Djokovic with that 21st major and he was 2 sets down and he`s 34 and he`s been out for 6 months,had surgery and did not think he would even play in this tournament.

He`s unique and quite unbelievable.

Always amuses me when people claim a tournament doesn't count because a certain player wasn't playing.
If you look through tennis history loads of grand slams have star players not playing. Indeed Rafa has missed 10 majors.
Nobody cares in the long run because tournaments are bigger than individuals.

He seems to have made a mess of it but.....still, all over some bullshit covid rules in crazy Australia.

If countries in Europe started kicking out champions league winning teams with unjabbed the competition would be almost worthless.

If sport is decided by politics its a sad time and sport will stop going to places that have such mad rules.
 
Amazing feat, officially the greatest of all time. On the downside I had money on Rafa but cashed out after he lost the first two sets...

exactly. 3 great great tennis players and I think that subject to the world being free of covid and it's restrictions that Djokovic will go on to surpass both Nadal and Federer but his achievements will always be tainted over this incident.

Agree with both comments. The fact that arguably the three best players ever have won 61 grand slam titles means that they have deprived each other of wins as well as everyone else. What an era for tennis we have had. The new stars such as Medvedev, Thiem and Tsitsipas don't have an ounce of charisma between the lot of them.
 
Amazing achievement, I felt for the other guy at 2 sets up he had one hand on the trophy, but that's what separates the greats from the also rans. I still think Federer is the GOAT I just loved the way he played but I'm in the camp of anyone but Djokovic so I'm quite pleased Nadal won. The amazing thing is he is right handed and his uncle made him play left handed as its deemed a slight advantage in tennis. I watched a programme where he was trying to write and catch with his left and he was useless!

You'd say the same if sport was ruined by blocking out players of top clubs for eg for political reasons?

He may have made a pigs ear of it but the initial reasons for him not being allowed in were political.
 
Nadal 21, Federer 20, Djokovic 20. At 4 per year that's 15 years of utter dominance, scarily good all three of them. If Murray had played in another era he'd have won a lot more.

Still a **…and politics has nothing to do with it…he knew the rules and chose to find any excuse to be there.

Maybe, but id rather just see the best play each other, he was no more a risk than anyone else. Australia have lost the plot over covid.
 
The BBC news managed to relegate this behind the England Women’s Test Team news last night. One of the all time great matches; their editorial is just bonkers.
