Riga

I've been a couple of times but only for flying visits to a certain banker

Will be pretty cold then

Think it's better in the summer

If I was you I'd head somewhere warmer - Seville / Cordoba / Granada

Went there on the pre season tours. Great city but may be a bit chilly in March.
Stayed in the Albert Hotel which was fine.
War museum was fascinating, lots of good bars and restaurants though watch out for the mafia run clubs !
Recommended

Don’t mind cold, we did Bruges this year in March and Iceland last December, just back from turkey last Fri at 38 degrees so like to do both.

One of the best city breaks I had was in Valetta
Loads of great history and also the opportunity to visit Gozo
Can also recommend a host of German cities, the Spanish ones referenced above and Budapest

16 of us went for my 50th birthday, end of October. What a lovely city.
As others have said plenty of nice squares, bars and restaurants
The beer bike was a fun experience
We also went to watch Riga FC play

As others have said stay away from the touts who will try to persuade you to visit the more seedy places

Overall highly recommebded

My personal favourite city break is Porto, maybe take on other northern Portugal towns such as Braga, Guimaraes or Aveira or the beautiful Douro Valley

Also trying to do different countries each time, heard tallin in Estonia to be nice
Old town and square in Tallinn, definitely worth a visit. Admittedly, was there back in 2010. Superb olde worldly bar in one corner of the huge square, serving strong ale in steins, by attractive serving ‘wenches’. Estonian women, are (IMO) some of the prettiest in Europe. 👍🏼

We are starting a road trip on Friday and will be in Porto next week ( Maia, actually). We have booked the Duoro valley train and will also take the train to Guimaraes- was last there in 1976 when the trains were still steam-hauled! Then back into Spain via Braganca and the mountains. Really looking forward to it.

Guimaraes is absolutely gorgeous
Make sure you take the cable car (or walk) to the church and castle area which towers above the town

Yes,we walked it 47 years ago, but it will be the cable car this time. It is the Duoro trip I am really looking forward to. We will have a day in the city and go over to Matsosinhos as well.

I would give a shout to Prague for a city break, you can still get some fantastic deals. As usual don’t eat in the main squares a few blocks back and some great places to be found.

Great stuff KT. I live about an hour from Porto, know it well. Have a great time!

If you want a really nice, short and very cute, lovely train ride, come down to Aveiro, where I live, and take the Vouga Line(Linha do Vouga). It´s the last remaining 1m gauge line in Portugal, old-fashioned, stops at little hamlets that time seemingly forgot. Go to Àgueda(lovely river there). The last 2 stations after Agueda are very small villages(Macinhata and Sernada do Vouga). I ride up there on my bike and get the tyrain back. It´s delightful!

Yes, the Pocinho train from Porto São Bento(a beautiful entrance there) is really lovely , especially in the Upper Douro Valley.

About 20 years ago but loved it. Bought some Russian leader Russian Dolls and Putin's one of them which tells you a lot about Russian democracy.

Went in Winter but it seemed to suit the place and you get to walk on water when the river freezes.

You will probably get off the train at Pinhao, very nice place though small. You can take a boat trip further up the river from there
There’s some good wine tasting options in that area

Matasinhos is fabulous for seafood and fish restaurants. I was there in May

As Brazil says Aveiro is nice though a night or two there is enough

Plenty of nice places between Guimaraes and Aveiro- special mention for Amarante, well worth a stop for lunch and a wander around. Brazil May know it
