Right Back

Yet again we start the season without a right back, hopefully Gabriel is close to a return though
Surely on his second half performance Jack Moore has earned a start on Sunday
Going forward he was very effective and seemed comfortable defensively
If not Sunday when will he get a chance to prove himself
Another option could be Tharme
I think he has been used in an earlier game in that position, but I can't remember how well he did
He had a good first half at Salford as centre half he was competitive and didn't seem to lack pace
Connoly and Virtue are good enough to compete for the midfield places where their strengths lie
Appleton knows his formation, tweek the players in the right places and we will be more than a match for anyone

Personally I’m surprised Apter hasn’t been played at RWB yet. I could have sworn his preferred position was on the RW so just moving deeper would have been more natural than LWB. That being said - he’s looked good wherever he’s played. A new Danny Coid perhaps ? (Only without the injuries hopefully!)

I think Moore deserves at least 45 minutes on Sunday - he looked comfortable and I’d much rather a natural RB plays and then plays second fiddle to Gabriel once he’s fit (unless of course the Irish lad arrives). Tharme also looks to me like a more natural RB than either Connolly or Virtue.

Jack Moore has potential but it’s a big ask too expect him to step up to Championship level with limited first team experience. Gabriel’s fitness record needs to improve to be honest.

agree. And it's the same with Apter at left back too. Think there's a time and a place to give these youngaters a chance but for me it's not the first game of the season in the Champioship. Especially either in defence or a position which is not their favoured one.

Apter is not a defender and is just helping out while we try to get Garbutt and Hubby fit. Not great that our 3 senior full backs are all injured...

Stand corrected but I thought Apter was naturally left sided player. He played down the left for the youth team when I saw him.Puts a decent cross in aswell didn’t know he had that in his locker

Maybe the whole inverted winger thing has me confused ! Either way he’s a great talent.

Yes. When we played Leeds, Moore was pushed around by physically stronger and bigger players. The Championship will be no different.

As the Specials said, too much, too young.

I wonder why it is that every left footed player is expected to be able to play left back?

Apter doing a job at right back speaks to his talent. I hope he gets his chance. I'd like to see if he has a Wes-style killer pass in him. All I've really seen is neat and tidy so far, which is fine but might not see him in our first team any time soon.

Agree with this
Moore and Apter need game time to progress.
Virtue needs game time in midfield in the Championship after his long injury, and I do not think any will let us down.

I remember slating Tharme at RB against Southport. Totally changed my opinion of him now I have seen him at his correct CB position but please, no, not RB against Reading.
I know Ince is useless but you are not telling me that Reading aren't going to incessantly attack down their left unless we get the RB position bolted down. I think it was important to have got a RB in place early - if we are actually going to buy one, as the back 5 incl. keeper need to really understand each other. I am disappointed that we now have only one friendly left - and that is in 72 hours time. Not much time even if we bought a player now for them to gel. I know we can buy up to 1st September but we need to look at 3 point bankers and I think everyone would agree that Reading at home should be one of those.
Rob Apter isn't the answer - cracking player but not strong defensively. Jack Moore, again looks quality but may need a few pies like Apter does.
Connolly is a possible but he has looked very good as a CDM.

Connolly will start there.

Makes it difficult for Bowler as he needs an overlap to create space when he’s doubled up.

Connolly will be solid defensively but it’s our current Hobson’s choice

Agree. It's more important for the first game that we are solid defensively so Connolly should be the man at right back. He did well there against Rangers and he's physically a strong player. We've also got options for central defensive midfield player.
I think we should go with Holloway philosophy
You can score but we will score more
Do a Birmingham on them

agree. Bowler works better with Gabriel as an attacking force but Connolly is solid defensively and thats what we need fr the first game. Hope that's Appletons thinking too. Barrow in the League Cup is a chance for Moore and Apter perhaps.

Sometimes tho that's how your promising youth team lads become first team men. Risky, granted but we've had a few players bought in recently who ve surprised many on this board

I think Wiz makes the key point earlier in the Thread. From what I've seen, Jack Moore is a very good footballer, but he'll need time to get used to the physicality and intensity of first team football. It's a big ask for the kid to do it in the Championship and probably unfair on him to even think about it.

Connolly will start at RB as it's clearly the right first team option.

If we can and do get the young Irish lad in then at least we know he’s match fit and ready to go. Whilst it’s not ideal he won’t have had much time with his teammates he’s not playing catch-up like some have in recent seasons.

*also believe his birthday is August 2nd so may just about meet the U21 rule for this season meaning he won’t count against the squad size limit.

If that deal happens, I think it'll drag on into August, I wonder if it might be worth bringing in a loan to give cover in the position, and also strengthen the club's negotiating position.

Can’t see that? He’s stuck to 4-3-3 all pre season barring that first game where he tried a 4-4-2 second half.

To go 3-4-3 he’s going to have to deploy against Everton to test it.
He might?
Looked like he played 3.4.3 second half against salford

The season hasn’t started yet…

If nobody arrives before the start of the season it will have to be Connelly at right back, which is doubly disappointing as he would do a good job as CDM and it means we still haven't signed another right back even though we know we have needed one since last May!!

The season may not have started but the preparation for it has
Friendlies are a way to assess new players and get players match fit
It is not so easy when players are moved about to fill other positions rather than their own
The post was more about giving young players an opportunity to shine

Unfortunate that Gabriel is injured but
Connolly, Virtue and Moore can cover, so RB is not my biggest worry.
I would really like a winger who can cross and a forward who can score

There are 3 or 4 in the squad that probably need to move on and there are 3 or 4 positions that need strengthening. The two positions you mention are definitely areas that need improving.

I would be very surprised if we don't bring one in on loan or maybe even push the boat out and buy someone in. However Sterling was class last season and this could be an Achilles heel.

I think what he means is, the season is now 8 days away and whoever comes in will not have had a pre-season with the new manager and tactics.
This is true but it's true for all clubs to some extent. The system is not easy to navigate. Two transfer windows and squads of contracted players. Clubs hanging on to players until they find a cast iron replacement. Clubs competing for the same players. The rich clubs trample all over the situation and just take what they want. Appleton is actually in a more fortunate situation than any previous manager I can remember at Blackpool is a way, he has a full squad of players who comfortable stayed up last season and with a few choice additions could become play off contenders. So we are in a position to wait for those few players who will make a difference. The full back position is unfortunate, with the 3 we have all injured. That kind of shit happens to all clubs occasionally. We are well stocked for GKs, CBs, midfielders and strikers. Fiorini is a good addition in a position we needed to strengthen.

It's all up to Appleton now. Can he build on the base that Critch put in place?

Critch put nothing in place………lot of luck and amazing player commitment! Plus the North, West, South support!
we need to unite"
