I know there are a few of us who watch this wonderful sport

I love it. lived in St Helens for a while and it got me in to the sport

What i don't understand is this salary cap, finance thing and how it works

For example how have Leigh gone so bigtime, i know they got their ground paid for, but how can they sign the players they have form such a small starting point

I like the fact that clubs like Leigh can compete but i don't understand how it works and if it would work in football

They have a fixed budget, which is the same for all clubs. They are allowed a couple of marquee signings to build the brand which can exceed the cap.

I've totally lost touch with Rugby League but growing up in Leigh and Wigan I used to love playing it. We had Andy Gregory, Dean Bell and Joe Lydon coach us at primary school - which, if you know yr rugby league you'll know is like saying Gary Lineker, Franco Baresi and Liam Brady came to coach us... I.e. the best players in the world at the time.

A top sport. Humble and hard fought.

But a free sports village that they earn money from every single day of the week
That presumably, they can't just pour back into the team cos salary cap. Ergo circumventing the cyclical problem in football of rich staying rich and winners begatting further winning and the kind of 'big six stasis' that football suffers from.

Maybe.

I don't know enough about modern Rugby League.

I do know I'm more in favour of a salary cap than twatting about with regulation and points deductions and complex shit that makes no sense at all as we have now.

Hilton Park was better anyway.

Also. Aren't Leigh sort of a home for slightly damaged goods? I could again be wrong but I read that they've signed a load of talent but quite a few that other clubs would be suspicious of as they might be a bit 'Nile Ranger'

I honestly don' t get it

I did a few days working on the Sports Village when i was consulting so i know for a fact it cost the club fcuk all

Leigh RMI play there don't they. Or Leigh Genesis as I think they are now.

Who I think I'm right in saying Critchley played for in his illustrious career.

I live 2 miles from the ground…Leigh leopards… Man Utd woman… Man Utd U 19 and U 23 play there.. Kelly Hodgkinson (800 metre) runner trains on the athletics track behind the ground… it’s a really busy complex…. Just don’t get caught coming out of Morrisons as the ground empties…. Total nightmare 😂

Do Leigh Genesis actually still exist? (What was Leigh RMI and before that Horwich RMI?)

Went a couple of times in the early 90s with my mates from Workington, that town bleeds League, no idea what was going on but enjoyed it anyway, they were in the Premier League then but were screwed over when Super League arrived. Third division now.

This has sparked a weird memory - I think I've seen a Blackpool side play there. In my dim distant memory it was against a Blackburn Rovers side. I'm guessing ressies??

I like watching Rugby League on TV. It's fast and frantic compared to union, which I hate. The crowds always seem decent.

I'm surprised we've not got a good team from Lancs (not Greater Manchester) tbh

Having said that, since Super League came in in 1996, there have been the same teams winning it every year. Now and then someone threatens to, but it doesn't happen.

Bradford Bulls (no longer Super League)
Wigan
St Helens
Leeds

That's it. More of a hegemony than the Premier League.

Fair enough. On what rules is the cap constituted - is it based on a league average of income or is it based on individual club income? I e, is it uniform?

I thought it was uniform, set every year. I'll ask my rugby mates.

There are two NRL matches being played in the USA in the small hours of tonight. They’ve done this before attracting pretty much sell-outs.
Strange?

I like salary cap in sports but they all tend to overcomplicate it. The NRL (Aussie rugby league) has a salary cap. I like the NHL one the most as it is simple. It is just the salary of the players and they name say 23 players and have like 90M and all the salaries are disclosed. I.E this players cap hit is 6million.
It is still has issues as different states have different tax laws/rates and also some places are more desirable to live than others. The NBA and NFL are extremely complex these days.

When I was a kid I watched Salford at the old “Willows”.
Swinton were the big team and they gave us a hammering every time!
Like Football many of the then major sides have slipped out of the big time.
The likes of Swinton, Oldham,Rochdale,Hunslet,Bramley, Batley,Halifax,Workington etc.

Watched Blackpool Borough a few times.

It's a strange one for me as I've always followed Hull KR since being a kid, look at results etc but have no interest in watching a game as I just find it boring and repetitive. I don't particularly like Rugby Union but I find it an easier watch . Each to their own I suppose if you like it. Some of the changes made to League over the years have been ridiculous as well, I remember Widnes particularly suffering. I take it there's no relegation anymore from super league?

Love RL. Probably my second favourite sport.

Shame there is no appetite for it round our way. Remember attending a few of the failed Blackpool Panthers games at Bloomfield road in the early 2000's. Shame it never took off.

One down every year

Love both versions of Rugby.

Actually watched it last night over West Brom v Coventry game one of the best games of rugby league I’ve ever watched.

Still cocker hoop from last weeks world club cup final Wigan v Penrith amazing game.

Would love to see some football players playing a game of rugby can you imagine someone like Fernandes in a maul or a scrum? 🤣

Love league, like union.

Watched Blackpool Borough between 1976 and 1980.

Really good mate of mine is a St Helens fan so I saw a number of their big games (mostly defeats against the Pie Eaters) through to 1996 when we saw their win at London Broncos which set them up to win the first Super League. 10,000 at the Valley that night - that and the following year was peak for rugby league in London.

Apart from taking the kids to Blackpool away games, me and them had season tickets at London Broncos for a number of years. 99 quid for me, 25 quid for them. Great days.

Now I still watch the game when it’s on the Beeb. Still a good watch.

On the subject of Leigh, another mate is a long standing fan. I was so pleased for him when they won the Challenge Cup last season. I was also so annoyed at myself at choosing to go to watch Blackpool at Exeter that day instead of going to Wembley….

Part of the NRL promoting that league in the US. I suspect they think there is a gap in the US market for a physical contact sport played in the months when there is no NFL.

The NRL have chucked a load of money at it. We will see whether there is a market for it beyond Aussies travelling for a Vegas trip.

I'm in Vegas at the moment to watch the NRL tonight (only 9:34am here at the moment), should be 2 cracking games.

Regarding Leigh, the salary cap doesn't apply to the Championship, so they spent big on players to get promoted and then had to let some to go fit in with the Super League rules. I don't know, but it's possible the stadium was built in their Championship years to doesn't count, but to be honest I'd be surprised if the cap covers anything other that salaries.

Regarding the comment about NHL salary cap (I'm going to see the Kings, Ducks and Golden Knights as well as few AHL games on my trip), there are always complaints that it isn't a level playing field as some states, Florida being a prime example, with no Income Tax, so the cap goes a lot further there.
