Salzburg

Beautiful city, a visit to the castle is worth it but have a general mooch around and soak up the xmas markets. Restaurants are normally very good wherever you go and the menus are very similar but prices will vary depending on where you go. If you have enough time dip into the Alps cold but stunning weather permitting.

Love Austria, we've always landed at Salzburg. It's a good place, although I do prefer Innsbruck.

I'm no real fan of the film, but it's possible to visit all the main filming locations round there: the front and back of the family home (2 different places), the graveyard where they hid at the end, the place she got married etc.

Mozart's birthplace, well signposted.

But if you're there for even only a few days, check the trains and get out into the smaller Tyrolean towns. Kitzbuehl, St Wolfgang, Zell am see, even Berchtesgaden and Krimml falls are all within an hour. Innsbruck and Mayrhofen much longer trips because of what's in the way! But still worth it.

Eagles nest, about 30 miles if memory serves.

Actual site was a bit disappointing but the views were phenomenal.

There's an amazing bit of it though. Shortly before I went there I'd read Band of Brothers - E Company was first in to Berchtesgaden. There's a big fireplace in the main room, they all wrote their names on it, recognised a lot of them from the book.

Admittedly, it's probably not a reason to go from Salzburg alone, but as J says the views certainly are.

The views are over Koenigsee but this time of the year you might not be able to see a great deal due to low cloud and possibly snowing.
