Scoring goals is a problem

As the old saying goes, goals change games. 4 home games and only 1 goal. Jerry not looking like scoring at the moment, TJJ not looking much of a goal threat either. As a team Do we carry enough of a goal threat ? Are we going to score enough goals to keep out of trouble ?

It's no secret that Jerry needs a taller target man to play next to him.
Hopefully Madine will soon be fit enough to start.
When GM has had a run of games, we'll know the answer to the o/p then. 👍👍
The partnership worked in L1, why not at a higher level.

Forwards are not scoring enough, that's for sure but they are being given scraps to feed on. Desperately missing a forward thinking creative player who can link things up between forwards and midfield. All very predictable at the moment.

It’s not just us. Hull Peterborough and us are all in the bottom five of fewest shots on target: 19 for each. Seems like we’re all adjusting and looking to improve in a much tougher league. It’s early days.

I am not a qualified football coach , but I do realise that pumping the ball high into the air , for Lavery , will not create the goals.
But yet we continue to do it, surely in this new style were meant to play you stick to it and improve on it rather than give up as soon as a few passes have gone across the back line.

Its almost like fear of losing the ball stops some from trying passes.

Scoring goals was the issue last season as well until everything gelled.

I don't think it's any coincidence that we are ok countering away from home with the midfield and forward line naturally getting space to operate whereby the pace exploits defences.

It's the surgical passing at home when space is tighter that we lack.

We either don't have that in the toolbox literally or players are still adapting to feed into the front line effectively.

I remember Critchley specifically referring to this last season as the last piece to come together when understanding was established.

You could argue that this came about with the injection of Simms and Embleton as well.

You would like to think that the additions of Wintle in particular Jules and Lavery are this year's solution to that issue.

We have had pre season player changeover plus another within the transfer window.

Only time will tell if what is assembled is enough. That can't be measured here and now.

By definition Critchley must think what is assembled is enough to have us head above water mid season.

10 games in is usually a reasonable guideline as to direction of travel .

Fingers xd

The problem for Jerry, Lav and tale TJJ is that they are not only getting scraps, but when they do get a sniff it put's so much pressure on them that they fluff their lines.

I hope the new untried lads are capable of providing a link between midfield and attack.

Need Mitchell back in but Ballard a big miss, up to now but the main worry is the lack of goals at home

We have players who can score goals, the problem is do we have enough of the players who can open up a defense
or ''Create'' those opportunities at this level, I dont think we have IMO. Stewart Dougall & Wintle are good players but all of the same ilk.

I have made this analogy previously and will repeat it again as I believe it is still valid. Our current midfield players are not what you would describe as goal scoring midfielders. Wind back to 2007 and we had Hoolahan, Southern, Taylor Fletcher, Jorganson for example. How many goals and assists did they contribute during that promotion winning season ? In addition we had the likes of Morrel, Burgess and Parker. Also during that campaign, every outfield player got themselves on the scoresheet. It was a similar story during Ollies tenure, goals from most positions.

For those who were critical of Southern, he is the type of midfielder we are currently missing. Somebody to get the ball in our own half and run through the middle. We also need that creative player like a Hoolihan , Adam or Vaughan.

Our current midfielders are pretty much alike but none of them appear to have that additional special eye for goal scoring on a regular basis. I must say that I get frustrated and puzzled at the lack of any consistency in the shooting ability of most of our players when they have a strike on goal and our set pieces leave a lot to be desired. Practice, Practice, Practice is what they need to do. I’m sure Renaldo still practices every day and he’s as good as it gets .
