Scott Benton

https://committees.parliament.uk/publications/42581/documents/211708/default/ -- page 14, section 59:

"In our view Mr Benton breached Paragraph 11 of the Rules and it was an extremely serious breach. The bar for breaching this rule is a high one but Mr Benton significantly exceeded it. The message he gave to his interlocutors at the 7 March meeting was that he was corrupt and “for sale”, and that so were many other Members of the House. He communicated a toxic message about standards in Parliament. We condemn Mr Benton for his comments which unjustifiably tarnish the reputation of all MPs. This makes it all the more important that Parliament deals decisively with cases like the present one where a Member shows themselves to be unworthy of the position they hold in public life"

A 35 day suspension is very high compared to the usual decisions. The only higher suspension I can think of was the 90 day suspension which was prepared for Boris Johnson, but he flounced before facing the music.

"A suspension of more than 10 days - if passed by the House of Commons - triggers a recall petition.

If 10% of voters in his constituency sign the petition a by-election would be called."

All though it will probably cost him his seat, 35 days sounds like quite a light punishment in principle considering what he was actually admitting to, and accusing others of ??
I have read allegations that what he offered could be considered insider trading? Anyone got any more detail?

That, of course if proven, is a criminal offence.

Another Tory stooge wholly unsuited to represent the area, never had Blackpool's best interests at heart and deep down we all knew it. Just another chancer who rode in on the Johnson bandwagon - god help us if we ever elect idiots like this again. Look at the person not the party.

RICH BOY SUNAK is s;;;;;;g himself. he knows that IF one was called then they would lose the seat. NO doubt the five foot odd jug eared gimp would be coming oop north to sha\ke and bake . its about time this unelected did the decent thing and called a General Election.

WOW!!!

I'm gobsmacked. The radio is actually saying Blackpool South on the news and not somewhere up there on the left of the map.

I assume this has already been proven, if so why isn’t he just thrown out of Parliament and stripped of all his ministerial privileges? Or, is the suspension to allow time for an investigation to confirm everything?
What will be interesting is that he has already stated that parliament is corrupt (which we know) so if he was thrown out then there is every chance he will reveal all so that is why it won’t happen because he could expose people and ruin their careers.
Which in turn simply epitomises the corruption
Parliament (including the House of Lords) really does need a thorough independent investigation and a massive shake up but sadly that will never happen.

He was suspended from The Tory party a while ago. The investigation has taken place and this is the result. It is now up to Parliament to vote on the punishment or not.

if it is confirmed, I urge everyone of whatever politics to vote him out. Surely there must be a decent One Nation Tory who could stand in the constituency on behalf of decent law abiding Tories

Because of the boundary changes I get a vote in a by-election or do they go off 2019 residents.🤔
It will still be the existing boundary surely, otherwise you will be in two constituencies at the same time.

New boundaries come in during the General election?

Why has he not been thrown out? Because they are in the same club. The look after yourself club. Don't question why? Everyone knows why, only the naive people question why. On this OT page there's a thread about Michelle Mone and why did she get 100 of millions in PPE contracts. Because she and the decision maker benefit personally. Another thread about CV enquiry, again questioning former PM Johnson. He and his closest in office benefited. Another about COP28 and why are these world leaders having a luxury trip to Dubai to talk about saving the earth. Whybecause they keep together to cream off for themselves. It's so obvious. Moaning does nothing. The best way literally is ignore them and their BS. Buy a petrol car. Ignore the propaganda from news channels.

He can't be thrown out of parliament for a few reasons:

- because he was voted into place by his constituents;
- because the standards committee are also made up of elected MPs (who should be equal to, not having more power than, Snake Benton);
- because while the process we have is slow, it accomplishes the same thing.

The only way he gets out of this is if the people in Blackpool South are incredibly placid and don't get enough signatures for the recall. They will, and Benton won't be reselected to stand.

He IS being fired. Just in incredibly slow-motion - it's the system we have. There are currently 20+ suspended MPs!

I’m quite sure many others do this, he just stupidly got caught.
Does that make it ok though? My view is they should be going after the others, not just accepting it’s widespread and shrugging their shoulders. There are way too may politicians in it for what they can get out of it for themselves. They have to find ways of stopping it, it’s the only way we’ll get politicians who work for the benefit of the country and its population

Totally agree

Pay them more?

Now look here we can't go sacking every MP who's bent and/or on the make, they'd be none left. Actually that sounds like a good plan. Sign that recall petition.

I was thinking about the data on this, and I love Excel, so....

This government from 2010 onwards has seen the most suspended MPs, ever, with 17. Grift.
The pandemic gave them a licence to print money, and they took full advantage through the fast track procurement.

How anyone can contemplate supporting them for another 5 years is beyond comprehension.
