He's starting and got the number 9 shirt????Doesn't appear to be in Northern Ireland squad tonight.
Has he pulled his hamstring?
Ooops was multi-tasking and mistakenly looked at the "Ireland" team. I blame it on the heat. He's starting and got the number 9 shirt????
Yates best football was played as a partner to Madine.I'm not religious but I'd happily pray that we don't bring in a Madine like player to feature as a first choice striker! I'd settle for a Madine like player on the bench for if we're struggling to break down a strong defence and need to change to a direct style but we need to play our way out of this league, not hoof our way out!
Baffling how teams without target men survive, isn't it? I'd have 2 or 3 Jerry Yates' every day of the week rather than losing one for a target man! Beesley could end up proving to be a Madine upgrade, who knows, but please let's let the target man option be plan B rather than plan A, we've all seen that in action and it wasn't pretty!Yates best football was played as a partner to Madine.
Young runner needs a big man to hold it up imo
But it doesn't suit the Madine haters.Yates best football was played as a partner to Madine.

'... not hoof our way out!' I suppose it's basically just a case of horses for courses.I'm not religious but I'd happily pray that we don't bring in a Madine like player to feature as a first choice striker! Are you sure?Shayne needs to impose himself this next season.
NO...... Yates' best football was played with Ellis Simms. A mobile strike partner with a modicum of skill and COULD score goals. Unlike "the statue"Yates best football was played as a partner to Madine.
Young runner needs a big man to hold it up imo
I would prefer him to do it this season wouldn't you?Are you sure?
Liverpool thought it was pretty enough when they were winning almost everything with keegan, oh yes I almost forgot they also had a target man in Toshack.Baffling how teams without target men survive, isn't it? Hmm. You might be right.I would prefer him to do it this season wouldn't you?
That was a great Liverpool team but it was over 40 years ago! Even I realise that time moves onLiverpool thought it was pretty enough when they were winning almost everything with keegan, oh yes I almost forgot they also had a target man in Toshack.
I was just making the point, which applies as much today as 40 years ago, there is always room for a good big one alongside a good little one. That was a great Liverpool team but it was over 40 years ago! Even I realise that time moves on
I’m not against it myself. I would just employ it as a Plan B or against physical teamsI was just making the point, which applies as much today as 40 years ago, there is always room for a good big one alongside a good little one.
To reiterate we still need, especially in league one, a bit of beef. As you say not necessarily as plan A , but there are times, as we found out last season, when a few extra inches are sorely needed.I’m not against it myself. I would just employ it as a Plan B or against physical teams
With 23 other teams in League 1, I'd hope we have Plans A through WI’m not against it myself. I would just employ it as a Plan B or against physical teams
Dunno. He played left of a 3 for Swindon and scored loads. Salah scores loads from a right position in a 3. Yates is a great finisher but he needs the right set up around him.Jerry is a decent player but it’s clear that he cannot play as a central striker in a 4-3-3 formation as his hold up play and strength is simply not up to it. If he has a foil alongside him in a 4-4-2 or 3-5-2 formation you would get the best out of him.
Critchley though favours 4-3-3 and previously shoved him when de left in a 4-3-3 which reduces his ability to get goals.
He got 13 goals in 31 appearances for Swindon on loan.Dunno. He played left of a 3 for Swindon and scored loads. Salah scores loads from a right position in a 3. Yates is a great finisher but he needs the right set up around him.
Thats fine but hes not Eoin Doyle and cant play that position. It affects his value I think. Whats his brst position? Does he need a specific formation? He got 13 goals in 31 appearances for Swindon on loan.
Eoin Doyle got 25 goals in 28 games that season in the centre forward role.
He scored the majority of his league goals this season out wide in the the three under Appleton up top on his own he looks lost.Dunno. He played left of a 3 for Swindon and scored loads. I suspect clubs looking at him see both his strengths and his weaknesses and wonder where he fits.He scored the majority of his league goals this season out wide in the the three under Appleton up top on his own he looks lost.
So for me 3-5-2 or 4-4-2 etc to get the best of Jerry or if your playing with a loan striker he's better wide cutting in.

Is Yates the 1?Jerry needs a partner or an aggressively forward thinking no 10 to run beyond and exchange with him. I agree I wouldn't use him as the central point of a three. I actually think the oft stated notion that Appleton was a mentalist for playing him wide is nonsense. He scored most of his goals from open play for us this year from that wider berth.
If I had to set up a team around Jerry, I'd go 4231 with the no 10 kind of player as a very attacking one as Jerry is good enough to swap and play a kind of false 9 at times.
Lavs is different. He needs to run off the shoulder of the last defender and chase things. Jerry needs movement and one touch football (or a Gary Madine)
My original point I thinkThats fine but hes not Eoin Doyle and cant play that position. It affects his value I think. Whats his brst position? Does he need a specific formation?
When Critchley first arrived from Liverpool he started 4-3-3 but eventually went rigid 4-4-2 with 2 DM's & full backs supporting the inverted wide men. Ball rarely going into the box, preferably back & across to boost the possession stats. Yes we got promoted & easily stayed in the championship under NC & probably should be more gratefully after last seasons shit show but unless he let's the reigns of a bit can't say I'm desperate for the season to start.Jerry is a decent player but it’s clear that he cannot play as a central striker in a 4-3-3 formation as his hold up play and strength is simply not up to it. He's not a twin if that's what you mean.Is there an Ellis Simmsalike who is out there?
But has the game not moved a million miles from those rather archaic times of the big man/little man tactical approach?Liverpool thought it was pretty enough when they were winning almost everything with keegan, oh yes I almost forgot they also had a target man in Toshack.
Yeah.Is Yates the 1?
I wonder if we might consider 3 at the back? Connolly Marv Hubby.Yeah.
How many times last season have poster’s said, you included, we are being bullied by big opposition players? As I said earlier, this isn’t a plan A, but all sides need a Madine type player in the squad. There are times we need to bully/ out shithouse them back, ala big gaz.But has the game not moved a million miles from those rather archaic times of the big man/little man tactical approach?
I agree, Gaz was a great plan B that was used as a plan A far too often. For some reason he was first on the team sheet when we were up against a big defence when, in my opinion, pacey and technical players are more effective against big lumbering centre backs and Gaz would be far more dominant against smaller defenders. It doesn't seem like rocket science to me but for some reason our recent managers haven't seen it that way. I'd love the opportunity to ask them why!How many times last season have poster’s said, you included, we are being bullied by big opposition players? Which bench?Shayne on the bench.
I think I've got that right tonight.
