Sheffield United v Blackpool Official Matchday Thread 15.10.22

No wonder Sheff Utd were top, they probably kicked the shit out of any team that dared scored a goal against them.

When will the authorities understand that events like today wouldn't happen if their refereeing was competent?

Really proud of our lads today. That wasn't easy and they stood up to the challenge. Even going 2-0 down away to top of the league would've been the end of most teams but we showed we're no pushovers.

Bottom line we'd have snatch anyone's hand off for 4 from 6 out of the last 2.

Two winnable home games now. I'll take another 4.
They would've been winnable had the ref today not caused half our team to be suspended. Not to mention the injuries no doubt picked up because he was too soft to punish the Sheff players conduct in front of the home crowd.

Sadly when you get a ref like this you know it's only going to go one way.Thought a couple of theirs were straight red not given. He would have played another 5 minutes if they hadn't scored, and our fans keeping the ball would be his pathetic justification excuse.

What an outstanding performance from the lads today - certainly the better team.. sadly just giving away 2 soft goals.

That referee was diabolical, potentially, if not the worst I have seen in years. Some of the decisions made were ridiculous. He had no control of the game, certainly towards the end. It's just incredibly disappointing because we deserved them 3 points, we fought long and hard for them. Yes a point at Sheffield going into the game you'd be happy with.. but I feel robbed.

There are some clear learning curves to be taken from this game.

Firstly Dom Thompson - Yes he was fouled, but knowing your on a yellow card to then boot the ball at there player in outrage is just pure stupidity. He played really well initially at the pool, but as of recent he has had to many loose passes and given goals away.

Shayne Lavery had a brilliant performance today and certainly showed glimpses of how good he can be. I just hope we see that sort of performance continue. I believe the red card at the end of the game was very harsh as it appeared he was pushed to the ground and I highly doubt it will be rescinded given our record of appeals.

I admired the desire from the lads right until the end of the game. The energy shown today CANNOT BE QUESTIONED! There equalizer again is a difficult one to take - appeared that Maxi was pushed, but it's pointless going into this as that sums up how the referee was today. Just imagine the scenes if the ref disallowed that one, sadly I don't think he had the nuts to.

Well done the Pool and what a game that was to watch. The support was incredible from the fans compared to the silence of Sheffield.

The ref was clueless but we got away with the handball in injury time. We had 9 hero's today. Maxwell did well after lucking suspect for 1st two goals. The sending off of Thompson might be a blessing in despise as he needs dropping.

Im absolutely fuming with this prick. He has ruined the game. I need to watch this back to see how many decisions this idiot has got wrong thats led us to lose this game. 8 minutes is bollocks. The penalty award is just laughable. Maxi is fouled three times in three corners that werent even corners. Rhys Williams gets kicked in the head and he gives a corner to Blades. He sends Lavery off for getting thrown on the ground. This **.

Good post but the push on Maxwell was a deliberate tactic. Take the goalie out of the action and shoot. That is a deliberate tactic and should be punished. Unfortunately, this ref just wanted a Sheffield goal, however it was going to come.

For their 3rd goal, Maxwell was clearly shoved to the ground and into the goal by McBurnie their No.9. Which made it very difficult for him to recover for the soft shot coming in. A clear foul that the lino should have flagged.

And when the shot came in there were at least 3, if not 4, SU players standing offside in front of our keeper.
Appleton should make it a big issue for this whole team of officials, not just the ref.

But for the ref would of been a quite amazing win, a point under the circumstances away at top of the league with 9 men is still a stupendous effort from the lads in Tangerine. UTM
Fair play to those who went giving them a rapturous send off. They absolutely gave everything and deserved 3 points. 9 players vs. 12.

You'd have bit someones hand off if they'd offered you a point before the game. The manner in which 3 were taken from us was shambolic though and you cant help but be fuming.

He got both sending off right, the rest of his performance was at best incompetent and at worst bent. You could have taken a referee off Common Edge and he would have done a better job of that second half. As for Thompson already on a booking, words fail me. Hopefully Husband will be back sooner rather than later.

Yup - Thompson is a liability at the minute -
That ref needs investigation

Looking back at it Wright didn't come out and block quickly enough. Not his thing perhaps but he will hopefully learn - not blaming him, it should have been a foul on Maxwell anyway. Connolly would have blocked that shot I think. Likewise, compared to Thompson, Husband would have stayed on the pitch and used his nous. All told, we are not getting the breaks but our spirit is something else.

Sounds an appalling refereeing performance, which will in the end probably cost us more than the two points it did today.
A very gutsy and brave performance also by the sounds of it, and I would certainly have snatched someone’s arm off for a point when we went two nil down.
Well done everyone. Hope there’s not been too much trouble outside the ground!

Yep I can't disagree. Very frustrating. One can only imagine if VAR was in play during this game

Agree our team spirit is second to none.
I'm looking forward to MAs interview

If it was then they'd have got a pen from Hong Kong Connolly when he chopped the ball

That said, a ref and a lino missed a blatant foul and offsides for their goal. How can they have players interfering with the keeper whilst stood in an offside position and not see any of it

I'd love to have been a fly on Appletons shoulder...... I bet he is raging

Great point from 2 down but it felt like a loss. Ref lost it in the second half. Ffs that’s 3 more players suspended I wonder who will play at LB if Husband isn’t ready.

Just read the Sheff Utd board and they are saying exactly the same….should have been a foul for McBurnie’s push. Makes it all the more frustrating and annoying….total incompetence from the officials but particular the ref.

It won't be worth diddly squat but I've complained to the FA about the referee.

Good luck with that!

One thing that has never changed in my 60 odd years of watching football is that the officials will always close ranks. Not only that, if anyone calls them to account, clubs will pay for it in how their subsequent games are ref'd. Ask Olly.
