So how are people wanting us to set up against Portsmouth?

Away to top of the league who are unbeaten. Can we approach it in the same way as we did yesterday?

I don’t see why not and I have a hunch that NC may well think the same. I hope so as it may go some way to stfu some of the negative impatient peeps on this site.

I'm not sure. If we do it and get a negative result, I'm concerned that it sets Critch backward on his road to enlightenment.

Ultimately, we've got 1 tough game, then a run of 8 against sides considerably lower than us, with less resources. I'd be perfectly happy to take a functional point at Pompey if it meant we went at every single one of those next 8 opponents if that makes sense. It's not beating Pompey that defines our season, it's making wins against teams like we played yesterday par for the course.

We beat the bottom 13 home and away (I know we can't now do that cos the season is already a third over, but humour me) and that's 78 points. Another 12-15 points against the top 13 and we're pretty much nailed on for automatic.

What I'm essentially saying is - I don;t mind a masterclass against Pompey at their place. That's the time and place for one. I don't want masterclasses against out of form teams at home.

I’ve always thought attack is the best form of defence so let’s give them something to tink about but will the tinker man tinker again?

A nice blend of realism and positivity.
Get yourself back on the Podcast and show them how it's done.

Exactly the same please. Portsmouth seemingly rely on a strong defence, they've scored less than us, but obviously don't conceded very many at all. Expect them to be quite cautious, a bit like Bolton, defending further up the field, and being aggressive. get them making mistakes in their defensive third.

Equally, if we set up more defensively (which I think we will) and lose he will get pelters from the fans for being too negative.

Yesterday was great and we should definitely be playing like that at home but away to Pompey is a completely different thing and I think it’s naive to think we can replicate that type of approach every single game.

Agree with you in that I’d love a Critchley snooze fest 1-0 Shithouse away win.

ME i am going eight pawns at the back knights sat in the middle of the park rooks bombing down the flanks bishops playing diagonal king in front of goal with the queen taking out any attacking threat. its the double reverse critchstein game. three points in the bag. utmp.

Same as yesterday, let them worry about us. Shrewsbury nearly scored first remember, and Colby Bishop might well have taken that chance. However even if we do go one down there's no need to change things.

Hopefully the performance yesterday can give the players confidence in what we do, go and be ourselves as NC says.

We do need to improve results away and no better place to do it.

Crisp passing, good movement, attacking intent, players played themselves into form, go there to win.

We've some good attackers in form now.

I presume Joseph would be coming on again rather than starting, but he can have an impact hopefully.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Dale drop to the bench at the expense of a defender and Norburn to come in for Carey. It would be a bit harsh on both but I can understand why he would do it away from home vs top of the league.

Personally I just don't want to see Rhodes up front alone as it didn't work at Bolton and I don't think it suits his game. I'd like to see Joseph/Rhodes with Dembele as the number 10 but I think Bees will keep his place after two goals.

Only change I’d make would be Norburn in for Carey to shore it up a bit. I’d even consider Lyons for Dale as he’s a marginally better defender and still a threat on the left.

Depends if Norburn is back.
He's out best number 6 and Dougall has to start that leaves Dembelle or Carey which kind of changes things.

Look at how Charlton attacked them (Gwan Mapp!), I think that’s the way you guys need to go too. Charlton couldn’t of scored more than the two they did, admittedly so could of Pompey…

Could've or could have.

If Charlton and Carlisle can go there and give them a game, so can we.

Thought Carey did exceptionally well, too often he seems unsure of his role, but with Dembele in front of him he was acting as proverbial water carrier.
I am happy to see him in a more forward role, but Dembele behind 2 mobile strikers has to be the way to go both home and away for the time being.

Keep it exactly the same, it worked well. Beesley had a bit more support when holding the ball up and had outlets to Dembele, CJ, Rhodes and Dale. Previously earlier in the season he had far far more work to do.

Go at them and if we lose, we lose. But I don't think they are that special. Good outfit in a very poor league.

Haha, the sentiment was correct, good spot. I hope you do go there and give 'em what for. Chesterfield beat 'em the other week, let's not forget...

But as you point out, Shrewsbury are bloody awful and not a good barometer generally...

Football fans often get carried away after wins, and after defeats. I try to look at how the teams performing across the last few games, what is working and what isn't. I think our side is coming together, we played pretty well at Bolton but without enough threat up front, I think cos Lavery got injured in training he opted for one striker. Since then, Beesley has come in for an EFL trophy game and won himself a place, and we've seen Joseph have a couple of good cameos. He looks sharp already. Marv makes a difference, in my opinion, too. If Norburn is fit we could go to Pompey in good shape. The best shape we've been. The Shrews game provides a good confidence boost ahead of it.

I'd be quite happy if he just picked the same 11 to start as against Shrewsbury, yes, it's going to be a tougher game, but we've got to start picking up points away from home and this would be a great place to start.
We're better on the front foot having a bit of a go than trying to sit back an cling on for a point, show some balls and have a go at them.

Horatio Nelson HMS Victory Royal Navy Ark Royal and the bloke with the bell. Your boyz are gonna get a hell of a beating. 0.4. UTMP.

Luv us to learn and have a go, and not being negative but this is NC picking the team🫣 he will be thinking defensive first and see if we can sneak a goal on the break This is why our points return away from home is so poor, hope to be proven wrong but doubt it. Oh and no point bringing on the attacking players when it’s too late and we are losing the game.

Would take a draw now and a win against the Cobblers on the Tuesday - one swallow and all that and we know how inconsistent we are!

If we try to play defensively, Portsmouth will eventually score, and it'll be an okay performance with barely a shot on target.
Send the lads out with a similar starting 11 to the Shrewsbury match, with Dembele just behind the two strikers, in a Gary Taylor-Fletcher type role, and take the game to them. We would also have Kyle Joseph in reserve to come on when one of the strikers run out of steam.
Come on Neil Critchley, allow Pool to go for the jugular for once, away from home, and let's get Pompey stuffed.

I'd like pace available for the last 20 minutes as they seem to be a side that sees games out.

Nothing but a win please. Let’s take our A-game to them and see how they cope. Would be a great barometer to see how could we actually are/can be. UTP

What does taking out A-game to them mean in terms of tactics/setup though? Not a snarky question just genuinely curious

2 up top (Rhodes & Beesley) Dembele sitting behind, attacking formation and intent to score as many goal’s possible from the off let’s take the game to Pompy.
