Sonny Carey

I felt this guy owed us a performance, and today we got it. So many times he just picked the ball up and found someone! I was nervous when he came on for Bridcutt and for a while we were too open. But Carey played so many killer passes that you feel Wright (as much as I like him so far) probably wouldn't quite have pulled off.

Contender for MOM today for me, although CJ (the recipient of so many of Carey's sharp little passes) deserved it.

Edit: or Jerry. Whoever got it. I don't care! 4-2!!! 🥳

He is still so young we don't need to count him in our squad. I really rate him. If he came from the youth team, I feel we would have been raving about him. Great result with the age of Carey and Patino in crucial positions.

Dougall playing deeper with the other two given a platform to roam makes a lot more sense, And Patino and Carey both have enough energy and bite to do the defending a bit further forward.

question. why was the Preston keeper wearing his wifes / girlfriends blue stockings, really not a good look🤢

agreed. Some of his vision and passing were superb today. Shame about the final ball when he did so well going past three or four and breaking,if he had just put the ball in front of Hamilton then certain chance but overall excellent. As was Bridcutt before him who started the game very well aswell.

SC drives forward when he gets the ball in a bit of space. He did that a few times in the 2nd half, beating about 4 players before passing the ball out to CJ. His run and lay off for Patino's goal was excellent, although Charlie will quite rightly get the plaudits

Probably the best I've seen SC play, same with CJ

Well done lads 👏 👏 👏

He had a superb second half.

I was puzzled when Lowe took Woodburn off as he was bossing the midfield until then, but Sonny certainly took advantage of that.

Why, out of interest? I think he's been consistently 7/10 when he's played for us in Appleton's 4-3-3.

I really rate him. He's the perfect profile style wise for the 2 advanced midfield positions and he's the perfect profile age wise for the squad and to come in and out and get minutes.

I talk about shit players but he isn’t one and should be starting. He was excellent especially in the second half. We need to start players who can actually kick a ball and play football on the ground.

I like him too, but I think he's had some very poor games recently. To the extent that I was doubting whether he was ready for Championship football. I think today he showed it was just form.
It also helps when players around him are on top of their game also. Makes life so much easier for the team.

That’s how you force your way back in the team. Lots of great performances today but Sonny and Jerry both forced it to happen, through sheer desire! Amazing performance.

Yes, same as anyone else.

Anyone thinking he's not up to it on the back of a single start and a handful of 15 mins subs surely has to give the lad a chance.

If Carey plays our no10 role up to the WC break and looks out of his depth at that point, then fair enough. But of he believes he can own a midfield like he started to do for the last half hour today we may just have someone who could relegate Wright and Fiorini to backup roles.

I think we got lucky with having to bring him on in the circumstances. Had Bridcutt not got injured we may not have seen him at all. Once he settled he pushed on, turned their midfield often, quick clever passes, presented an attacking option from midfield we wouldn't have had.
Second half he was awesome.

I must admit I was ready to see him subbed.... Then immediately sets up Charlie. What a plonker I was! Didn't he also put Charlie through in the build up to Jerry's second?

I will go and hang my head in shame (whilst still grinning from ear to ear)

It was a great ball through to CJ who the played it to Charlie, but it was a superb pass.

Thought he started a bit on the flimsy side with backheels to nowhere, but he came through brilliantly. Another learning what it is to be a consistent championship player, he has all the talent you need. Promising.

Good response we have to cut some of the younger players some slack, they are improving and bonding as a, team

As I stated a week ago in a previous thread, he has quality but needs games as he has jumped a few levels. If he slips back in our pecking order when everyone is fit, we should loan him out in Jan to a league one side. We should also give him a new extended contract now.

For the first 15 minutes of the second half we could not get out of our own half. Carey went on a number of driving runs and managed to get us back on the front foot.

Did well today, you can see for the Patino goal he receives the ball well and skips past thier player and runs in and lays off for Patino to finish expertly.

What we do have to remember with these young and still quite inexperienced players is they will have dips and are learning on the job.

They do have talent but youngsters can be inconsistent.

But they will improve, grow and they do give you lots of energy.

If we can keep a lot of them together for a while they can become better when they start to develop like Jerry has.

I’m a big fan of SC since he first pulled the tangerine on. He was just starting to get up to speed and getting a regular game up till his injury at Hudders on Boxing Day, he’s got a great future with the Mighty and he had a very good 2nd half today 👍

He demonstrated in his very first appearance for us that he can play a pass, run with the ball and battle with the best of them in midfield. He's a really good player and definite Championship standard imo. I personally feel he should've been starting instead of Wright, although that's not to say Wright's a bad player at all.

Edit to add - our two best performances last season Carey was involved in - Reading and Hudders away.

Yeah he's a good young developing player.

As for Wright he looks promising, but will need time too to settle and develop.

That was his best performance for us by some distance. Like with CJ, the key is setting up the side in a way that gets the best out of players.

Initially he was in a no mans land position where the game was happening around him. In the second half, Kenny dropped deeper and Sonny was able to be forward looking, driving forward into their half with ball at feet.

Footballs a simple game when you just let people do what they’re good at.
