Sorry lads, but Dembele……

This is a tough, physical league, & coaches / players know how to quell the threat of a physically small, tricky player. They give them little room & use as much physicality as they can get away with.
Dembele influences a game when the opposition stand off him & let him play. Today, Derby got stuck up him and he spent more time lying on the ground appealing for free kicks than he did on his feet.
He's likely to have more influence on Monday.

….Is a waste of space. Absolutely nothing from him…again !
Fuck me, I know it’s polite to respect your elders and all that but you lot are making it bloody hard.

The kid has literally lit up our season. He’s been instrumental in the vast majority of exciting moments, and gets all the fans up on their feet home and away.

He is singled out for rough treatment week in, week out and clubs in the Premier League are tracking him reputedly?

However - nope, he’s a waste of space…. Ffs

I think the number of games he has played and the pressure on him to be our best player has caught up with him.
We simply can't afford to "manage" him any better than we do.

If the club can afford him, keep him and build a team around him,but epeill cost money,we only got £5 mill to spend, that’s including rabbit field and new stand plans again,

First half today, particularly the first half hour, Dembele would get the ball turn & run at Derby. Unfortunately he was getting the ball mid way inside our half, & ain’t going to trick his way through an opposition from there. Dembele needs the ball in the final third.
The getting the ball deep is indicative of Critchley’s persistence of playing 3 centre backs. Play a 433/442/4321 system (2defenders) & you push the team up the pitch - ie giving players like Dembele better opportunity to receive the ball in more attacking areas.

Been poor away from home especially a lot recently but can agree around him isn’t much better.

There’s a reason he’s ended up here this season with us in league one ultimately.

Every team puts two players on him and he gets booted nearly every time he gets the ball. I dare say if he had better players around him he would be more effective. He’ll often be looking to make a pass into space but there’s nobody on the same wavelength.
Championship and Prem teams are tracking him, not bad for a waste of space.

He can’t seem to stay upright

Every team has now worked out if you stop him playing and cut off the supply to him then that’s 95% of our creativity gone.

This is where you need some other options. Just shut down Dembele’s side and we’re screwed.

Yeah I agree. There’s very little apart from him.

He's a good player, potentially very good, cos he's got creative talent and a touch beyond most in this division. However he needs to be in a team that gives him the space and support he needs, cos he isn’t going to make it happen himself. And we sadly don't do that very often.

And we don't have a manager that sets us up to play that way. The Critchley crab football, playing across the back ad nauseum before the inevitable hoof, is what forces a player like Dembele to go too deep just to see the ball occasionally.

Also, he absolutely needs to be at a level where he gets more protection and he'll never get that in this division. Not with the mentality of most teams and the poor quality and consistency of officials at this level.

He isn't perfect. He lacks consistency and over reaches with too many of his moves. However some of that is at least, I suspect, born of frustration.

I like the lad. He and Rhodes have been pretty much the only entertainment value this season. I wish we could give him the platform here that he needs to take the next step up. That just isn't the case right now so he feels like a luxury the side can't afford.

So not a waste of space so much as wasted potential for me.

I actually agree with this. The fawning over him has been overwhelming and completely unjustified.

A fund to buy him? Some people cannot see the woods for the trees. Yeah he's tricky and can have flashes of brilliance but so can CJ Hamilton. I put them in the same bracket. He has poor first touch, is featherweight spending half the game on his arse and is missing for most of the time.

Reminds me of a talented 12 year old trying to get involved in a mens game.

Of all the many legitimate candidates to blame for our woes this season, you single out our Dembele?! Easily our best player. I feel sorry for him and wouldn't blame at all if he threw the towel in at the end of season.

featherweight yes, but poor first touch? A truly farcical comment.

Poor first touch?!!
He’s literally got the best first touch of any of our players. He had a couple of poor first touches at Northampton and the commentators mentioned how unusual it was.

Same again today. And ends up stretching to try and get the ball when he should have controlled the ball. Did this multiple times.

But I actually agree with a previous poster. Whilst I can see Dembele for what he is without rose tinted glasses he isn't the problem in this squad of players. It all falls on the manager.

Spot on post. More evidence that Critchley doesn't know what he is doing.

People need to remember he’s a young player learning his trade, he will make mistakes like any other. Our problem is we have a squad of players brought together to play to a system the manager wants. We don’t have any other player of that ilk or any winger with pace and guile to play along side him or replace him apart from Hamilton. Does that make any sense !
