Sorry lads, but Dembele……

Only one that ever looks likely to do anything though and can't win every game on his own .Do we really expect to win every game with a sloth upfront .Despite critchleys formation woes we hardly carry a threat upfront and realistically can't expect to reach the playoffs with this squad it's not good enough .We do have a few poor or average players .I actually think critchley is over achieving Carey and beesley are not league 1 players .Don't get the Pennington love in either he constantly gives the ball away and always gets in situations he should do better in and for me is also league 2 standard .Dembele might not have had his best game for us today but he was still the best player on the pitch and we went downhill when he went off and derby came into the game for the first time we just could not keep the ball longer than a millisecond in midfield

I actually agree with this. The fawning over him has been overwhelming and completely unjustified.

A fund to buy him? Some people cannot see the woods for the trees. Yeah he's tricky and can have flashes of brilliance but so can CJ Hamilton. I put them in the same bracket. He has poor first touch, is featherweight spending half the game on his arse and is missing for most of the time.

Reminds me of a talented 12 year old trying to get involved in a mens game.
Sorry to be a pain, Mac, but you've left me a little confused. Even now, I'm struggling to work out how you actually managed it, and I've even thought of seeking medical advice on the matter, but I'm hoping, once you've furnished me with an explanation, I can wash my hands of the whole sad, sorry busness.

The passage causing me such great vexation relates to the line which begins thus: 'Yeah he's tricky and can have flashes of brilliance but so can CJ Hamilton'. The part I'm struggling to come to terms with relates to the section containing the words 'flashes of brilliance', and the name 'CJ Hamilton'.

I'm not going to beat around the bush here, because the issue I wish to raise can be condensed into one line: how is it even remotely possible for the name CJ Hamilton to appear in the same sentence as the phrase 'flashes of brilliance'?
He couldn't even manage a 'flash of brilliance' (singular), let alone manage 'flashes of brilliance' (plural). So, basically, the sentence in question makes absolutely no sense, and so, to avoid the possibility of action being taken under the Trades Description Act, I've decided to wield the editorial axe, and I've removed the offending (not to say wholly misleading ...) text.

Sorry can you type something shorter? I got bored. Cheers.

People need to remember he’s a young player learning his trade, he will make mistakes like any other. Our problem is we have a squad of players brought together to play to a system the manager wants. We don’t have any other player of that ilk or any winger with pace and guile to play along side him or replace him apart from Hamilton. Does that make any sense !
No, it makes absolutely zero sense. Replace Dembele with CJ Hamilton? WTF!!! The former plays on a completely level to the latter, and CJ isn't even fit to tie the young Brest loanee's boots. And, while he might have pace to burn, I think it would be fair to say there is absolutely no demonstrable level of guile evident in Hamilton's armoury, and certainly nothing to compare with what is such a key part of Dembele's overall game.

This is a tough, physical league, & coaches / players know how to quell the threat of a physically small, tricky player. They give them little room & use as much physicality as they can get away with.
Dembele influences a game when the opposition stand off him & let him play. Today, Derby got stuck up him and he spent more time lying on the ground appealing for free kicks than he did on his feet.
He's likely to have more influence on Monday.
Never seemed to bother Wes, or Bully before that and the league was rougher then with less protection.

He is less effective when he only has one player ahead of him and none of the other midfield players make runs to go beyond him.
Play him behind a front 2 with someone like Byers occasionally making a forward run and he will be effective.
It was the negative, static tactics that stifled him today, he can't waltz past 3 or 4 players but if he can get past 1 or 2 and have an option to pass to he will cause problems.

That could be the worst take on a footballer I have EVER read in my life.

I think you’re a good chap and a good poster.

But to keep it simple, that could be the worst footballing post in AVFTT history.

Aye he's that good we're pissing the league aren't we?
I’m going to answer best I can and as short as possible to keep you interested.

Dembele is a quality player. It’s his 1st proper season playing every week. We’ve probably flogged him too much but we’ve no alternative (Apter would have been perfect to alternate with) and if you stop him we’ve no creativity. Every opposition coach has now clocked this. His intelligence and ability to play passes as well as his low centre of gravity to turn and get away from defenders when he’s on song is a joy to watch. The 2nd half at Fleetwood away he was untouchable. There’s been many more moments too. Does he drift in and out of games too much? Yep, but his age and freshness explains it. Does he need to be more consistent? Definitely. Considering half the fanbase knew where he needed to play about 5 weeks before our Head Coach did sums it up.

But to mention his name alongside CJ Hamilton 😂

Dembele’s footballing ability is worlds away from that of CJ, he was in Celtic’s 1st team at 15, whilst CJ only started playing football when he was 12. You can tell.

My o/p, so may I qualify it. Away from home, Dembele gets no protection from Referees. He is routinely knocked over….. in silence. At Home he does better because the crowd howl at the Ref. and he wins a free kick. Nobody is disputing his ability, but the end product is as rare as hen’s teeth. The odd killer pass or goal, a season doth not make ! They may have to just play him in home games, because every ground that we’ve visited has treated him roughly. Players of slight stature need to be able to deal with it, but sadly, he can’t.

Good point

A good point, well made Lytham.
Maybe it's just a case of Kaddy having to toughen up a bit?
A pre match report from the Derby press, highlighted that Derby had to stop Kaddy from playing - and they did exactly that by using Sunday league tackling, without receiving 1 booking.
"Derby’s full focus must be poured into keeping him (Dembele) quiet, although several sides, including promotion chasers Peterborough and Bolton, have found it difficult to contain him."
Reports say that he's attracting plenty of attention from the PL & championship, so those clubs must think they can develop him further & that doesn't bode well for us keeping him.

When Connolly has been played extensively until recently, CJ who got a long contract and has forgotten how to play any form of football and who has never been able to trap a bag of cement, to call out the only player we have that shows any inventiveness or real ability on the ball seems a bit silly.

Critchley’s tactics are destroying our better players just as much as they don’t suit our journeymen players. They need a new approach and a new positive game plan and manager. Get rid of this chump ASAP would be my view.

The only way opposition teams can deal with him is by fouling him . If that game yesterday was being played in the prem the yellow cards would have been out followed by reds for repeat offenders .

Instead he gets little protection from the refs which completely ruins the flow of the game and we don’t see the best of him .

No wonder league 1 football can be a struggle to watch when tricky little players like him are routinely fouled without consequences .

some-one posted his goals and assist stats recently. It sort of dispels your utter nonsense.

He is what i call a luxury player, everyone sees the flashes of brilliance with his skills, deliveries from free kicks, IMO the league doesn't suit him he might be one who moves on to another club higher up and then struggle to kick on, you see it happen all the time.

Some threads on here have me nodding slightly if the point being made is similar to my initial thinking but keeping an open mind I can then take on board somebody posting the polar opposite. What was said by the o/p and then backed up lumping him in with the invisible Hamilton is jaw dropping. Agree with 66 that Dembele has started to come too deep to receive the ball but maybe that's a reflection on the Norburn thread that he rarely drives forward even when space is in front of him. All the negative points made about any of our players, especially after another groundhog day away performance rests at the feet of one man 🤔 erm.
