Southgate to extend contract?

Christ, this is a miserable board. We have the most successful England manager since Alf Ramsey, the most successful BFC manager since Ian Holloway, and a new, local, owner who is putting millions of his own money into the club, and all most of you can do is complain. I just don't get it.

Two holding midfielders and Harry Maguire. And as soon as it gets tight we retreat rather than attacking.

He's just a younger Mick Mccarthy.

Other than beating Germany in the Euros he’s had unbelievable luck of the draw at finals to make him look more successful than he is. I know people say you can only beat what’s in front of you but Russia 2018 lost to Belgium and Croatia, basically as soon as we faced anyone half decent. Qatar bounced out straight away to France which is fair enough but doesn’t say a lot.

I don't mind Southgate but I feel he'll have to win this one to stay on for the next WC.

Football fans are generally clueless ** idiots. We've always got DA BEST SQUAD, let's not forget DA GOLDEN GENERATION who couldn't get past a quarter final. Southgate hasn't had a midfielder remotely in the same class as Scholes for example, until now anyway. How many of our squad would make it in to the other top teams, Kane, Bellingham and then who else?

A manager arrives, comes within a whisker of winning something for the first time in two generations but according to internet experts we SHOULD BE SMASHING DEM INNIT. Dead easy to roll over an Italian side innit?

Maybe Southgate should be a bit more shouty, play 442 and grow a moustache, oh and less of this wokey nonsense that's clearly united an England squad for the first time in 50 years.

It's just English lazy arrogance, everyone's forgotten Iceland in 2016 as well, obviously.

We don't deserve to win anything as fans, bunch of gobshite know fcuk alls. At least this time we won't have the chance to smash up our own national stadium before the game's even started

Do you think England had a better team than Belgium and Croatia in those games then or we should beat them because they're 'only' Belgium and Croatia?

Absolutely agree with all of this. Id also add that although we have the umpteenth golden generation of players who seemingly only have to turn up to win something we lack world class central defenders. At the very top end of a tournament that will probably cost us.

Yep, it's why we try to keep possession instead of going tits for leather, Southgate knows we can't have runners against this defence.

Has Southgate been successful? I think most fair-minded people would have to say he has, although we obviously haven’t won anything.
The issue some fans have though is with Southgate’s ‘handbrake on’ approach to games.
The safety first football certainly isn’t always an enjoyable watch and there is a feeling a more attacking approach might yield better results.
Would it? No idea, but it would certainly be more entertaining.
Postecoglu won’t win the league this season with Spurs but the fans are happy because they play front foot football and it seems like he is getting the most out of his squad in doing so.
Southgate divides fans because of his negative approach and that probably isn’t going to change unless we win something.
I would add Foden and Alexander-Arnold to your list of players by the way.

So you seriously think the team is not being built round Foden, Bellingham, Saka, Tent and maybe Madison?
That's just not true.
You are correct, but Southgate travelling to Amsterdam to see Henderson's first game there is a tad disturbing! He and Phillips should at best be peripheral now, and ideally not in the squad. Southgate's instincts are clear, and it's a kind of stifling thing. Too stifling, for me. I appreciate the stability he has brought but the tension has built up around the obsession with such a stifled way of playing the game. There needs to be a bit more joy and expression, which might lift us to a higher level in terms of achievement too. Dare to win, rather than play for penalties.

I think we had a better team than Croatia, they had some good players in Perisic and obviously Modric but they also had Corluka who was in his late thirties at that point. I think we were probably on par with Belgium who had their golden generation

It's a no from me. It's been said above and maybe a bit cliche, but I also think he is not the one to get the best from this young and talented squad. I am not a hater but think his persistence with Henderson might define his exit as he seems to be selecting him out of defiance or blind loyalty.

Can’t see Southgate beating a better team in a tournament. Which is what he will need to do to win one so we won’t be winning the euros.

I think what he did to get players enjoying playing for England again is commendable and was what was needed when he got the job, however if were to progress we need someone who can now get more out of the squad or set up to beat teams that are better than us on paper. He hasn’t shown that he’s able to do this. I hope I’m wrong but I’m fairly certain we won’t reach the final this year.

This will be his fourth tournament, if he doesn’t win it’s time for someone else to have a go.

Wot I said, but better put.

Please, FFS ,no

Here we go .. the resident football know nothing slagging off the best England manager in years. Do you just feel jealous of people doing well in their careers and feel compelled to rinse them on here ???? I remember your obsession with Raheem Sterling. It’s tragic
