Sports teachers at school

Top bloke and a great coach Jack Quarmby . I played for the the 1st XV for three years and we were very successful. Also did Cross Country in the First Year with Derek Slater who also taught me Latin.
Derek taught me Classics. Gave the impression he was starchy, but top bloke especially on the end of season drinky poos we went on.Great company.

Frank Hessey - the fat canary in his dodgy trackie. I recall he was done for some criminal activity or other? Fiddling a lottery or something?

The best at Baines for football had to be the legendary H. Ellis Tomlinson. Despite appearing to be about 100 years old he would still join in the football sessions. Woe betide if you had no shinpads as he'd boot you with his 1950s style toecap before sending you off. His favourite shouts were " have a dabble" and " shooot"! Not one for the 5 4 1 formation.

In other news he was the Blackpool fc historian and and expert in heraldic design - I believe, responsible for the tower power logo.
Fat Canary 😂 Who came up with that one?

Edit to add - he was involved with care homes latterly although there was also talk of basketball teams.

And as for Toss - I expect you’ll remember Participle Palace?

Didn’t he also become a scout for the nobbers , he sent a couple of lads from Palatine there, also I know one of his daughters was called Wendy .
Yes he was , he sent dave melia there he was a year younger he wanted me to go but i was already on schoolboy forms with the mighty pool . Wendy married pete Edge ( sadly no longer with us ) and i was their best man

Yes you are right re Dave Melia , the other one was Dougal McCloughan . Think you are wrong about Wendy marrying Pete Edge , although he did have a little dabble .
Do you mean Wendy no longer with us , hopefully not Pete as I am his brother & due to meet him at the match tomorrow 😂

Ellis was my ‘honorary’ grandad and travelled to matches all over the country with us. He used to sit next to me and bellow, “FORWARD!” at the top of his voice right in my ear, often resulting in a few specks of spit on my cheek! 😂 He once came to my house with his wife Lynne and helped himself to TEN sugars in his cup of tea!

Pool through and through 🧡👍

Anyone remember Norman Smith & Mr Grice from Palatine ?
Smithy ran the Blackpool town team. I found it funny because he got three of us on Preston schoolboy forms. ( that included the late Michael Robinson who went on to play for Preston, Man City and Liverpool to name but a few ) . Nice guy though as was Gricey.

Can’t remember who who any of my PE teachers were other than one had a lot to do with the CCF at school( a complete waste of time that was😡).
No football just Rugby,Hockey,Cross Country and Cricket in my senior school days and after a fall out , I refused to run the line on a Saturday School Rugby match as I was injured and went to watch Blackpool Borough instead😂,I never played for the school team again thank goodness,it was bad enough having saturday morning school especially after late afternoon CCF on the friday.
But in my Junior School days we briefly had the one and only Jimmy Armfield occasionally take our school football team for training( and he was already an England regular) .He also once stood in for a brief period as a classroom teacher😁.
Absolute lovely man and like Dave Durie( who was also a Methodist Sunday School teacher who would not play on religious holiday days were Blackpool playing ) a very religious person too.Jimmy often attended our local church youth club and I was lucky to have met and talked to him on many occasions.

I got a few cracks of him with his plimsoll a few times, Betsy he used to call it if memory serves me right!
Overated!!! It was all getting a bit hyper before the lesson so he plimsolled the lot of us. On another note there was 4 of us training for the town team relay so each of us individually had to run 100m so our technique could be observed and it turned out mine was the worst so that was that no further advice was given on how i could improve. We did however have an excellent footie team which literally picked itself we got to the interschools final we we played at Bloomfield road we lost 1.0 againts St Toms of Canterbury

He certainly was and such a lovely man too 😀
Funny isn’t it, how certain things stick in your head like the sugar grab! It was actually sugar cubes though…I think I must have been going through my horse riding period 😂

Yep, he was a truly great (and slightly eccentric) fella, and it is funny how may Toss related things I can still remember.

After one under12 game, in the changing rooms in front of the team, he said (bellowed) to me:

"Spudgun, do you have anything brown in your satchel?"

"Yes Sir, my physics book, Sir".

"Well go and look at it, and next time pass to those in brown. They are your side!"

Character building...:)

I remember Dougal think he was year below me, was John Mcphee his uncle?

I was same year as Dougal , good player, remember he had a little Mini Cooper, used to go to 007 club on Water Street. I didn’t know that John McPhee was his uncle though !

Don't know for sure, maybe he was because I think Dougal was a big Rangers fan at the time John Mcphee came to Blackpool, but then again he might not be, it might be me who's got it wrong. Either way they were both good players.

Walter Whitehurst took our year at St Aidens for 2-3 years; lovely bloke and had a connection with Man Utd apparently.

Changed our approach to playing the game; we introduced a sweeper who is a well known poster on here. He was fortunate to play in front of an excellent goalkeeper! 😉
I thought it was Onky mate?

3 I remember from Warbreck
Thorley Snelgrove and Smiler Marsden

Marsden was geography not sport but yes, he was a miserable fecker.

I think a relative of his posts on here and came on when we last had a chat on old teachers, so I'll caveat that with there was far worse teachers and he used to keep himself in trim by running all the time, I think his relative mentioned that he is still running now, he would have to be a good age so maybe he's down to walking ?

I see Dave Barnes quite often at De vere, great fella. I left in 1985 and remember Mr Fallon (basketball guy) and Smallwood. Fallon was bit serious, dour scot for my liking but reasonable enough. As someone said above Dave Barnes destroyed us when we played teachers v pupils in Rugby in year 5

Mr Barnes was a top man.

All the mothers of the kids in his teams fancied him and referred to him as Robert Redford.

I'm still saying Fallon was a James Hunt.

Smiler must have been 60 when he taught me! He was my form teacher too. I used to see him running down Bispham Road regularly

I’ve met Gerry in recent years and had some decent conversations with him and friendlier than the miserable sod at school .
I flagged him up as a sports teacher because from time to time he would stand in for missing PE teachers
