Squad Comparison

So this is the team that lost to Tranmere

Team: Maxwell, Feeney, Heneghan, Moore, Husband, Macdonald, Virtue (Spearing, 45’), Ronan, Dewsbury-Hall, Delfouneso (Ward, 84'), Nuttall (Gnanduillet, 45’).

Who from the current squad ( other than those here still ) makes the team ?

I’d say 2-3 max

The real difference are the loanees

They have to be better than what you have and almost beyond the reach of signing

It was the same in 2009-10 with Coleman / DJ ( albeit the Prem allowed us to sign the latter )

Recruitment of loanees will be key

The loan players are 4, Maxwell Virtue and Husband are still here, that's 7, Fonz and Nuttall were hopeless, Mitchell and Garbutt are better than MacDonald, CJ is better than Feeney.

We somehow got 3 very high quality loan players in. But we were hopeless nonetheless.

Patience is what is required. We don't yet know how things will turn out. People's minds are made up by the last ten minutes of football they saw. It's a team game, and our team hasn't come together yet. Like in the promotion season of 2006/7. When our team comes together it may be stuck in mid table for all I know. It may be in a relegation battle. But I'll wait and see.

Not sure you can say CJ is better than Feeney after so few games, remember Feeney was POTY and has had a significant career at a higher level than CJ

Not talking about his career, talking about now. CJ has also scored more goals already than Feeney did in 2 years. Feeney had one season in which Gnanduillet made him look decent. No super striker, no assists. :)

Well said, All - I really don't get what Voy is basing that on at all.

I'd rather have CJ. No contest for me.
Too many people are fawning over Hamilton. I hope he proves to be the star you think he is. I'm still to be convinced. He's a lot to work on in terms of putting some decent balls into the box. So far, he's been pretty dreadful. And he's playing as a winger. To counter that, so far he's pretty much the only forward that looks a goal threat.

Nice contradiction. ;)

Cross to who? Eddie Yates?

I’ve said the same myself, there’s a whole load of hype around CJ. I really hope he comes good but I can’t help think there’s a reason he’s been playing league 2 football for so long, probably inconsistent performances

I'll tell you who he's been crossing to.
The first defender, the guy in the stands behind the goal, and the subs warming up on the other side of the pitch.
And it's not a contradiction at all. It's stating his obvious weakness and what so far has been his strength.

3 goals in 5 games is hardly dreadful. Needs the rest of the team to step up to the plate and he might get some space to work, at the moment he is seen as our only threat and double marked.
Take CJ over Feeney every day of the week.

Think you've misread my post

No I didn't. I made the point about his crossing and said so far he's been dreadful. Ie his crossing has been dreadful. And then read the last sentence where I put the opposite side of the coin by saying he's the only one that looks a goal threat.. I wouldn't be saying he's dreadful if he's the only one that looks a goal threat would I?
His crossing is dreadful but he's scoring goals. A point I make in a later post but perhaps you choose to ignore that. He's a lot to work on with parts of his game.

The crux of this thread for me is that (as Ollie back in the day proved) that in any league - especially the lower leagues - the ones that are successful are charismatic or characters with a real leadership quality.

Whilst clearly none of us know what NC is like with his team, the signs from the matches on video look like a very pleasant man stood looking worried with his arms folded on the touchline.

Not sure where Grayson fits into charismatic or leadership qualities, and he’s not done too bad in this league

Feeney's crossing was good but his finishing was dreadful. They are different types of players. I'd take CJ every day. Look at preseason too, he looked twice the player Feeney did. Take Gnanduillet away and he's suddenly got nothing. CJ is a threat regardless of who else is playing. Quicker, beats players, and can finish.

Not recently. He had a bit about him back in the day after his playing days. He just morphed into being seemingly miserable and uninspiring.

And regardless of my obviously generalistic post there will always be the odd blind squirrel that finds a nut.

Permanent players are much of a muchness I’d say. As OP states the key difference is the loanees. Put say Taylor Moore and KDH in our team today and we’re a totally different side.

I’d take him scoring goals over putting crosses in. Our team is very short.

Feeney won it on the strength of his form early doors. He was terrible last few months of the season.

Yep, that makes sense. Not. Feeney is a traditional winger whose job was to put in crosses for the centre forward and you want to take the centre forward out of the equation. Look, Hamilton is fine, he's had a decent start and as I said he's the only one who looks a goal threat. But he's still a lot to work on on certain parts of his game - ie his crossing/balls into the box. You were so dismissive of Feeney and what he contributed last season. A point you needed putting right on.

Feeney had more assists than anyone other than De Brunye last season

You couldn't leave him or Gnando out of a ' best 11 ' of both squads
Agree and as you and others have said you'd have both Feeney and Hamilton in the team. SO based on the front three I'm not sure how anyone could argue against two from last season and one from this. Feeney, Gnanduillet and Hamilton

To be fair after our first couple of friendlies people said he could run but he wont score goals...he has proved them wrong to the point where most of the time he is the only one who looks like scoring...he needs to improve his delivery but may well do so...he is the only one of our signings who would command a decent fee at the moment

Not at all. Feeney had a great season and I have said so before quite a few times, he played well in a side that didn't have balance, and he made chances for Gnanduillet. But we needed to move on from that IMO, not least because Gnanduillet was determined to leave. Feeney would offer us very little now, this season, IMO. I'm mainly taking issue with you dissing CJ the way you have done, when he has been a real threat for us and scored our goals and warranted mass attention from the opposition. He was mugged by the Ipswich heavy mob every time he got the ball on Saturday. Feeney could cross a ball but he never scored and he rarely beat a defender, or got to the bye-line.
We have probably both exaggerated for effect and it's a pointless argument, but I'd rather have CJ than Feeney, personally. If you offered the fans the choice now, it would overwhelmingly CJ.

I've simply dissed Hamilton on his crossing ability, that's all. I readily acknowledge in my posts that he's a goal threat making the point that to date he's the only one.

We had one plan last year pass it To feeney cross to grands, unless you would want all the talent just passing to Feeney to cross it then I wouldn’t have feeney in my team.

This squad now shits on that squad
As a squad maybe, as a team well we'll see. I hope you're right though. I'd probably take Moore, Dewsbury Hall and Ronin from last season and put them in this team. Add in Gnanduillet and Feeney and that's five. I'd make a case for Heneghan too making six although to be fair I've not seen the two new centre halves yet or these two latest signings..
I'd certainly hope we've not seen the best yet of some of the other players.

20s, I agree with you completely. Hamilton is a good player for us and it's worth having him here. However, his crosses do let him down and that matters when you're a winger.
