St annes cycle lane

Personally I think it's ridiculous and unnecessary what they've done on clifton drive. Do councils ever do anything to improve roads for car users rather than make them worse apart from for a few on bikes?

Does anyone use the Clifton drive route regularly?

Also it seems this guy is right about the dodgy use of figures.

Don't come and live in Cambridge then! It's a ** nightmare, they even close roads off to help cyclists here as well as cycle lanes everywhere, motorists are considered the scum of the earth here. St Annes doesn't need any, the roads are super wide there and they have loads of room.

He is DEFINITELY right about the dodgy use of figures!

Yes it’s bonkers, single lane for cars who all have to go as slow as the slowest driver while hardly a cyclist in sight ,and the country has ‘no money’ !!!!
They could have built / improved the cycling lane, kept the pavement and kept the road as it was, there really was no need to change the road layout and speed limit imo.

They also stopped people parking for the dunes, not sure where they go now, probably around residential areas near Starr gate.

They're completely cherry picking and he's absolutely right to call that out.

Yet all he gets back is some stock statement that doesn't even address the false comparison used to justify the new upgrade.

If that's the level of deception used in their data for things like this then it's an absolute joke.

HaHa I lived in Oxford and it's exactly the same. When you're driving, cyclists are coming at you from all angles, left side, right side, straight ahead. And they always seem to have the right of way.

As for Clifton Drive, the council wanted to stop parking along the sandhills and the new layout achieved that. Great for cyclists though I have to admit. The biggest problem is the construction of unnecessary central traffic islands on the road. They might stop vehicles overtaking but they also stop the emergency services dead in their tracks, unless they drive past the islands on the wrong side of the road. I'd like to know what ambulance drivers think of them.

Talking about cycle lanes, amounderness way from the Eros roundabout was developed at huge expense to create a cycle/pedestrian pavement which is wide. You rarely see anyone walking or cycling and if you do occasionally, the cyclists are on the road

traffic is certainly ridiculously slow moving at times. Out of interest what were the reasons given for wanting to stop parking along the sandhills.

Forgot to say, in St.Annes there's usually a lot of drivers going far too slow as well, which makes things like this even more annoying.

A few things.

I’m all for cycling lanes off to the side of a main road, like they do abroad. They are much safer.
However, those lanes should never be wider than the width of the space for cars. Why does it need to be so wide???! It would have been better as one small lane on the old Pontins side of the road.

I hate the fact you can’t park for free near the dunes. I really used to enjoy that area, now you never see anyone using that space. Forcing people to use the Pay & Display car park 1 mile away is absolutely bonkers.

You might see a bike every now and again, but there are insignificant compared to the thousands of cars that use that route every day. And this shambles has created a jam. Long delays where none previously existed. I’ve been avoiding the area during peak summer periods, so businesses will be losing out. It’s not great for the environment either with all that additional congestion & pollution.

Or London - fines all over the place for cars (LTNs), no vote on it of course, this is undemokratisch UK - cycle lanes galore and they still ride on the pavements !

Just back from Amsterdam and there are more bikes than people and cyclists have priority. We had to carefully watch crossing the road at all times it was a bit stressful The plus side is a cleaner environment/air and litter free. Well worth a visit

It‘s the same in London crossing cycle lanes (rare cyclist) and then traffic

The whole local and National policy on transport is a joke

Get the trains running, more buses (not less) and advertise public transport better eg if you build a new tram line in Blackpool let every potential customer know what the timetable and Improvements are. People also need to know when their next bus or tram is (if that‘s strain that’s a wish list).

Essentially the Dunes are now unused by the public. A disgrace really. Many thousands of us were brought up as the sand dunes being a venue for an afternoon out.

This is why we voted Brexit so unelected Council officials could make mayhem with the roads...oh.

I knew it. Putting a cycle path on Clifton Drive is all the fault of Brexit.

Come and tell the one I saw knocked off their bike on Queensway. Cuts all over her face and ambulance in attendance. Or next door who was knocked off his bike on Clifton Drive- never touched his bike since.

The wider the road the more room for idiot drivers.

You just don't get it do you - they are trying to discourage driving and encourage any other form of transport.
When it becomes un affordable for the common person to have their own transport you will indeed welcome all these wide open spaces for all the cyclists amongs you.
Now if they did the same on Victoria Road West and dropped the speed limit to 20mph or lower I would be all over it, as it is all the nob head drivers driving down there's at +40mph getting tickets would be welcome for me, the cyclists are a lot easier to avoid as a pedestrian.

They upgrade cycle tracks as that's where the focus on grants and projects are from central government. It's all linked to this net zero no carbon stuff.

Who doesn't get it?

I think many know what they want us to do long term.

Something doesn't stack up.

When Clifton Drive North was reconfigured early last year, the reported cost of the whole scheme - road, cycle tracks, the whole shebang - was reported as £1.1m.
With the length being c1.3 miles, that works out at £0.85m per mile.

The article in the O/P says the 270m extension to Todmorden Road is estimated to cost £1m.
That's £5.9m per mile.

Either some contractors are taking the piss out of Lancs CC, or there's been some really inaccurate reporting.

Council Christmas party fund maybe?

Yes, let's hope " obese Britain" gets more like it is over there. I love cycling but there are some bizarre cycle lanes about that seem so ill thought out you wonder if it's just a box ticking exercise for the councils. There are the ones that last for about 5 to 10 metres e.g. near Stanah School at the roundabout, that are both dangerous and stupid, the ones that are so covered in debris (never road swept) that very few cyclists will choose to ride on them so obviously use the road instead... and, my pet hate, the "is it or isn't it a cycle lane?" ones... Shard Bridge... there is a white line on the left hand side that denotes the gutter - lots of debris and drain covers/rough surface - it looks like a cycle lane to some motorists but it isn't and the cyclist always has to choose whether to take your chance in the gutter lane or outside of the white line with cars often driving at 60mph+. Ridiculous. The council could spend money there, easily turn it into a proper cycle lane either side - and still leave motorists with a wide single lane carriageway. Or just get rid of the confusing thick white line either side. As others have said, our transport system is not good for any users ☹️
