I intended to spend a few days in Blackpool during the summer and take a visit to the park and zoo but couldn't manage it. What's happening?

Basically the council (predominantly the Labour part) have decided that there is no need for an 18 hole municipal (GOLF FOR ALL) golf course and let a company decimate the part of the course that goes behind the hospital into an adrenaline theme park.

I can't figure why you'd want to wreck a park like Stanley Park this is just pure vandalism in the extreme, instead of trying to enhance what should be a massive asset they putting up expensive stacks and a stupid zip wire next to a hospital wtf ??!!

It's simple ,because regardless of who is running the council ,no fucker listens to people's opinions anymore ,and they keep the plans like zip wire in house so not to upset the natives ,you know that's the people who pay their rates (the ones that actually do)every month for fear of reprisals (government & local councils corrupt as fuck)I lived on mythop road for almost twenty years ,and never once saw a councillor (you know that Marsden fellow),unless of course the local elections were coming up,even then I think the most he stood on my doorstep was once from memory!

To go back to this crazy decision after listening to sir kier starmer s speech to the Labour conference how does the destruction of this famous park fit in with the new green deal or is he not really aware of this bizarre plan.

think the o/p should make it clear he is talking about the golf course and not the actual park itself.

Sadly, the whole park is going to the dogs. The lake is being devoured by weed, the six bowling greens are an eyesore, the toilets are disgusting, the tennis courts are abandoned and the last time I was there a young cygnet had a fishing line and hook stuck in its throat. Our grandparents would be disgusted at the state the council has left the park in.

He's not in power and his party haven't been for 11 years. Any challenge would come from those who are always looking for a fast buck.

Its been in a worse state, lots of vandalism, less maintenance and local parents who dont give a toss in what their kids are getting up to.

This OP is about the Golf course and should say so

Stanley Park is a different subject. I walk in it every day and live across the Road from it. It is a terrible shame how it is being allowed to gradually deteriorate albeit it’s still a wonderful place. Me and my Wife think that it could be restored to its former glory with proper tennis courts, proper bowling Greens, graffiti cleared up etc etc without needing any extra funding.......through sponsorship and free work from local companies (by allowing advertising) and a small army of volunteers....including from schools and colleges contributing to the community.

and also a volunteer force of old fashioned Parkies patrolling the place to stop vandalism occurring and immediately intervening where necessary

Spot on Blood. Seems like the Friends of Stanley Park are not friendly enough to the place.

The Friends of Stanley Park are hard working, well meaning and committed people and in the main quite elderly.
I know three of them. I have no idea of their remit which I would guess is small tbh

The Park requires a bigger commitment by the sort of people that won’t have been asked to help....active, a wee bit younger, people with contacts, people who love the Town, have done well and are prepared to use their expertise to benefit a huge community asset

anyway....

Well it s a start, it's not only the golf course but all over the park as the council are strangely quiet to speak to their population concerning these matters ,they seem to think that by holding on to power that it gives legitimacy to all this utter mess, action needed

I know someone who enquired about taking over the tennis pavilion, restoring it and turning it in to a skaters/dog walkers cafe, they didn't get anywhere as the council were unwilling to talk and apparently it's privately owned?

It's the same story whenever anyone tries to work with them, they're not interested.

agree. A family took over the lease of the run down cafe and turned it into a big success. Then I think the council took it back over and although it seems to be still doing well and very popular credit has to go to the previous tenants.

The best thing to do would be to form a Friends of Stanley Park action group where locals take care of the park themselves instead of hoping to rely on the council. 1 willing volunteer is worth 100 forced men as the saying goes. They could raise money through charity events to help with things like toilet, bowling green or tennis court maintenance etc.

Edit - hadn't read the whole thread so co-incidentally suggested such an action group. Maybe they need more volunteers?

I occasionally work in St. Annes and park on the other side of the park there. I then walk through the park and it’s fantastic, lovely and well maintained.

How come they can do it and Blackpool can’t?

You mean the Art Deco cafe?...it is family run. I’ve been in a thousand times, one of my lads worked there and it’s this current family that has transformed it

I don’t know if it’s common knowledge in Blackpool golfing circles but Stanley Park golf course was designed by Sir Alister MacKenzie, a Scotsman, who also designed Royal Melbourne, Cypress Point and Augusta amongst many others. There is even an Alister MacKenzie Society

If anyone is really interested in saving the course, if it’s not too late, then some local media coverage re this might be worth trying

I’m afraid I’m not interested enough to be that person, tho I did get my best ever 18 hole score on Stanley Park

Other MacKenzie courses have shut in the past and of those left The Park is way down the list. Hope it can be saved but just because the CA was Mackenzie doesnt hold not much weight. I would think an objection from the hospital or / I thought the park was in a coversation area until I just looked and the east side is not covered. Residents objecting, although hundreds or many hundreds have already. It will be North Shore GC next when the council demands the land back early.

People who are against this must let their voice be heard its never too late to give these council leaders an earfull
