Stoke v Blackpool Official Matchday Thread 29.08.20

Because some seem to think they know everything about the game and players.

In reality these people are just giving opinions and not very good ones (in my opinion 😁)
The second sentence I agree with, good or bad, I am entitled to it as is anyone else.

Penalties a lottery anyway, draw against a Championship team a positive, two out our five designated takers missed penalties so not just Turton at fault there
Agreed not just Turton at fault, but to miss the goal completely from 12 yards is unforgivable.

Effectively we drew 0-0 with a Championship side in a competitive game and that is a decent result. The stats have us down as 53% possession but only 2 shots on target (although 9 all in total) means we have work to do up front. I would still like to get another body in up front.

I personally take alot of positives out of today. Do we need another CH 100%, could we do with another striker if we can get Nutall out on loan, yes. But we more than held our own against a Championship team that will probably end up midtable. I just want the season to start now, that's the most important thing.

Decent workout for an away game against a Championship team... Things still to work on and probably a couple of additions needed.
Also in this crowded shortened season I will be happier with not too many distractions from the league games.

Well I know who I’d sooner watch this season, thought we played well again and Stoke looked pedestrian and very mediocre most of the game. We’re only going to improve as we play more games, it’s so refreshing to watch after the dross served up by Larry, really revved up for this season! UTMP.

Sounds like we have several decent new players but perhaps still some holes to fill both in defence and goal scorers but definitely some promise of better things to come.

I definitely know that we're getting someone in next week, or maybe not.
If we get him I'll tell you but if we don't I'll make a name up as you'll all be none the wiser who we are or aren't getting next week.
Simples

Stating the obvious, but you could tell from Sarkic's body language that he was going to fail. If Husband had taken the first spot kick we'd have won.

In effect we have drawn away from home in a competitive fixture against a Championship team. I think we would all take that at anytime.

I was actually very impressed with how well a completely new team has gelled. We were by far the better team for the vast majority of the game, and far more entertaining to watch than Stoke. I don’t expect them to achieve anything in the Championship as long as they have Jordan Thompson playing in midfield.

In summary we played really well, it still looks like a work in progress in which the defence needs tightening up and the forward line needs to be more clinical, and It’s nice to watch an attacking team.

A short list off the top of my head of not bad players who have missed the target when taking a penalty......

Roberto Baggio
Chris Waddle
David Beckham
David Trezeguet
Christiano Ronaldo
Lionel Messi

Turton was the 7th option as penalty taker for a league 1 team. Dont just use his inability to take a penalty as another reason to slate a player that you don’t like.

you can make the list as long as you like, still unforgivable.

Thought we missed Virtue - is Kaikai going to be the classic one game trick pony again this season?

Missing a penalty in a cup competition that no one cares about and would have just added more games to an already congested schedule is unforgivable? You have to be trolling, you can not be being serious. The best players that have ever lived have missed penalties for crying out loud. Think you've forgotten that you are supposedly supporting a league 1 team, but with fans like you then who needs enemies.

Quite a low risk strategy that. 😂

Au contraire!! I have informed 3 venerable members of this board with the information in sealed envelopes so they will be able to confirm if I was right or not. Obviously if it doesn't happen, then I will divulge the players name anyway and wistfully go about my business.

Ha ha!

what a totally unforgiveable comparison, you should be ashamed of yourself. this is a football discussion board on which all opinions are free to be aired, just as you are free to disagree. But I, and I hope all right-minded people would find that remark totally abhorrent. end of discussion.
There’s absolutely nothing abhorrent about that remark.

Finally got to watch the game, only got the audio yesterday. We seemed to lack a bit of energy, didnt press the way that we did against Everton and the two previous pre-season games. Saying that i think we were the better side, Stoke look as though they are going to struggle this year, simple over the top for the CF to chase is not going to get them much.

Defensively we still look vulnerable, playing out from the back is dangerous - too slow not enough movement and too tight to one another. all the defenders at one point or another made good interceptions and tackles but all of them made mistakes. Might just be something we have to live with at this level. Also seemed less communication / integration going forward but we created enough to have put one away. Against teams like stoke who play without a midfield it was probably more important we pressed further upfield and put the back line under pressure.

Signs are still looking good though, Anderson and Robson both look the business, not sure about Ward in a midfield three, prefer him further forward, personally would play cj a bit deeper and get him on the ball to run at defenders. Kaikai when he gets it is a handful, Yates huffed and puffed but again wasn't in it for long periods. Maxwell always seems to be in the right place at the right time. bring on plymouth.

Something I don't think has been mentioned, and I'm sorry it's a negative, but CJ can't head the ball.
