Stonehouse.

Yes watched it and remember the story. They seeM intent on making him look totally dim, I doubt he was so thick, but who knows.

Anyone else watched the first episode?

Typical bloke in a high position, caught with his pants down and blackmailed.

Looks like it could be a decent show.
They made it up about him being caught with his pants down though …it’s not what happened.

I turned it off after 25 mins….terrible acting by the main character who acts just exactly like he did in Succession. All pretty unwatchable for a discerning intelligent viewer like myself.

The question I have to ask is:

Who left their clothes on the beach, faking their own death, first?

John Stonehouse or Reginald Perrin?

Answers on a fake passport please. 🤭

yep watched it. Not impressed at all. And as said, the lead role was pretty shit acting.

A strange one. Got through it as I was curious to know what happened. Played without emotion for most of the time, and
almost like a comedy in parts. I presume this is because they were trying to portray him as a fantasist, albeit a crooked one, which might be about right I suppose.

PS according to his daughter (and Blood obviously) the programme was way out of order, full of historical inaccuracies and very unfair on her father and his family. I have no reason to doubt that.

Agree with 20s.
MrsDP wanted to watch it, so I did. 😟
Was he really like that ? I doubt it was a good comparison.
Purely for TV.
I hardly remember him except for the publicity at the time.
He came across as a complete Tosser.

Typical "made for TV and your titillation" mockumentary. While there were elements of truth in it, for the most part, it was pure fiction. They never lived in the country but ina rented townhouse in London. At the time of his reappearance, his two daughters had left home at the ages of 24 & 26, his wife was not the fussy housewife depicted in the programme but a woman who worked full-time throughout the marriage. He had been on Mandrax for years as an anti-depressant before disappearing (Mandrax is now banned because of its serious side-effects). I could go on but that is enough to show that it was a load of nonsense in the main. He was by no means an angel, but not the idiot portrayed here.

Mandrax was prescribed to me as a sleeping pill when I was 27, I took it every night for around two years before they banned it. I was gutted, I wasn’t addicted, I had no affects from stopping other than once again struggling with sleep. I’m 80 now and I still can’t sleep.

Mates, I am 74 and intermittently have the same problem but Zolpiderm does the trick for me.

As you probably know, I'm 87.
I have, for many years, been a poor sleeper.
However, I never resorted to tablets to do the job.
In my years at Luton Airport the shifts were awful.
One particular one was Lates Thursday (Midnight finish), back on at 07.30 Friday until 16.00, and then back at 23.30 for a week of nights.
OK, we were on 20% shift allowance, time and half Saturdays, and double time on Sundays (5 out 6 weeks).
On the max of CS EO salary.
Well paid, but it certainly ruined parts of ones life.

Shifts are a killer Dave

Actually I watched the Real Stonehouse documentary earlier.
The events depicted on the drama might not have been convincingly portrayed, but actually I think stuck pretty close to what was in the documentary. Much more than I would have expected after reading the article by his daughter.

Yeah. That’s what I thought as well. The main difference seemed to be that the documentary made clear the size of the financial hole he was in. The “drama” touched on that but only in passing.

Yes the drama didn’t put any real detail on his business interests, and failed to create a strong enough sense of why he might have felt under such heavy pressure to do what he did.
Basic errors like the age of the children, and the type of house the family was living in didn’t help in adding credibility to their project either. Why do film makers do that??
His great nephew was a big voice behind the documentary (and possibly the drama series as well?).
He seemed to have little sympathy for his grandfather’s brother?
