Just listening to a chat on the EFL podcast about this - have just copied and pasted this from the EFL website - largely for the benefit of the bloke behind me who always asks me about how many subs are allowed at least 3 times as season!!

Following a discussion by EFL Clubs regarding the number of substitutes named in matchday squads, Championship Clubs have opted to use five substitutes from nine named (an increase from seven named) from the 2023-24 season.
Clubs in League One and League Two will continue to use five substitutes from seven named on the bench.
In accordance with the League’s Articles of Association each Division is able to propose and adopt amendments or alterations to a variety of fixture related matters, including the number of substitutes.

Is this going to be a permanent change? I can see the rationale for it thanks to the WC, but that's in the past now.

The whole squad should be available matchdays. In these days of mental wellbeing etc players shouldn't be excluded as this can impact on their mental health.

Logical and a natural progression when you think about it.

That’s how it works - although multiple subs kills a game for me rather than changes one.
Yes just another bit of shithousery used by teams that are leading late in the game. Annoying when it’s the opposition, great game management when it’s your own!!

Also a team can make a sub at halftime and doesn’t count as one of the 3 breaks in play.

Is it still in 3 blocks, ie you can't have 5 single subs?

I still cannot understand why the game has to stop for a substitution to be made. Surely the 4th official could handle that simple task in communication with the Referee

It is ridiculous that you are paying a squad of 22 and yet on a match day you have some of them sat in the stands!
