Tactics against Barnsley

A pound to a penny Barnsley will look to peg back our wing backs from the start and pressurise our back three on the ball. That will be where it gets interesting. Will we go unchanged (I hope so). If Dale plays, how will he cope with that? Will we go over the top for CJ to run? I just hope we stay on the front foot and keep the momentum going. It's our best and only hope.

I'd pick the same team if they are all fit. but please don't play a solid all round defensive player as a wingback.

No chance will it be the same. This is Critchley.

I can hear the post match interview now....

So why did you change it Neil?

Well, Barnsley like to play 3 1/4- 4 1/2- 2 1/4 so we had to match up which proved tricky in training for the players, so we reverted to trying to catch them still laughing when they saw Call at LWB.

Just maybe, the exact same approach would produce different results away to Barnsley than at home to Reading? Who hadn't won in 15 away league games prior to Saturday apparently.

The one thing that is for certain, is that Critchley will have done his research on Barnsley in absolute detail and will have left no stone unturned in his preparations for the game.... Whatever he comes up with it will be done with the very best intentions and will be analysed, fine tuned and improved upon as we move forward.... And that's precisely why I trust the bloke to find the right formula for success (Home and Away) at some point.

Obviously a win away at Barnsley would be a fantastic result, but I'd be plenty satisfied with a solid point and a decent performance.

The good thing about teams trying what the OP said now, is that because we have a physical presence upfront and players who can retain the ball, we can clip it into the front men and play from there.

As @BFC_BFC_BFC says, Critchley solves problems that arise over the course of a season very quickly. It's a proven track record.

It is always a good idea when teams use full backs as their only width to keep them occupied in their defensive duties. It becomes a game of brinkmanship as to who puts attack before defence. If Barnsley have decent wide men willing to work hard it will test us. Or the could have a Callum McManaman who allowed CJ the run of the right hand side.

Same team; barnsley, apart from the port vale game havent been massively prolific in front of goal but do concede quite a few, theres only seven teams that have conceded more. the interesting thing is portvale are above them in the table, so that one game might have been a bit of a flash in the pan. i think it will be more like the wigan game, cant see them sitting back.

the balance we had on saturday with midfielders in the centre, two wings to exploit, one very good striker whos on his game, and another who if he plays the same way will really bother the barnsley defence.

If they try to nullify one winger then we have another, they will have to pay quite close attention to rhodes and kouassi, rather than just one striker, and even if they can keep those four quiet we have King Kenny and virtue consistently making good runs into the box and driving forward.

its just a matter of critch having the confidence to let the players play. Could be quite a high scoring game though.

If they sit back and let us play at 2mph, we will struggle. If they press high, knock it long to the big lads up top.

mad-link = football tactician guru

Ps will be a tough game, please don't implode if we lose. Win however, and our season may just be getting in gear. Our away form needs to change and sharpish.

Barnsley won’t sit back. Heard only 800 tkts sold. Poor showing unless there’s a late rush.

I will give you 100 pounds to your penny that they dont give a fuck about our wing backs

Expect more of the same as we saw at Exeter, Lincoln and Wycombe. We'll play 5 at the back, try to dictate possession and hope we nick a goal. 😞

Play defensively we will probably lose
Play positively like Saturday we have a chance to win
Ticket sales reflect the previous tactics for away games

Critch might be keen to ensure we snuff out the Barnsley crosses if he's seen this.

thats some outrageously bad defending by port vale for almost every goal, we've been exposed by teams getting crosses in as well. i think our back three would deal with those crosses better. best way to keep their delivery players quiet is keep them on the back foot.

But there will be space behind our wide players and Critch being Critch he may decide to change things to stop/ limit the number of balls in from those wide areas.

That's what I expect, hopefully we are wrong. Gabriel and Lyons away from home as your wing backs it might work on a regular basis. Playing Hamilton and Connolly it will fail on a regular basis. Starting with Dale and Hamilton would be a win some lose some bold move.
I'm good with options 1 and 3, hope I never see option 2 again but I fear the worst, Connolly as LWB is such a bad watch and consistently doesn't work.

i could almost understand connolly on the right and a naturally left sided player on the left if its a defensive set up trying to stop opposition wide players. but a defensive wing player even trying to tackle on their wrong foot seems an invitation to either give away free kicks or just let the wingers pass and get crosses in. The inverted shisser ONLY makes sense if we are on the front foot and taking the game to the opposition, which we havent been until saturday. Obviously im not a tactical genius like his baldrickness but surely critchley can see this.

No-one's mentioned Kouassi yet. For me he's a must start. Let's go with some muscle up front alongside Rhodes.
Suspect we’ll find out away from home that he’s an immobile lump. Hope I’m wrong but wasn’t massively impressed, he should play Lavery with Rhodes if he’s fit. Play football on the deck

Kouassi played the ball on the deck to Hamilton when he was brought down for a penalty.

We do better when teams come at us usually.

But if they sit back were more prepared now to go long and mix it up.

Nothing proven about Critchley yet. He’s had a patchy career at best as manager.
