I seem to remember MacDonalds opening in Fleetwood and on the Job Vacancy / Recruitment adverts there were a number of requirements that all potential employees had to meet and one was ……. “no visible tattoos” …… I wonder if this would be acceptable now ?
I too was at sea, 15 years man & boy, but I did not see the need to get myself a tattoo wether it be visible or invisible/covered !!!

How times have changed. When I was a Cadet with P &O group I was warned not to have a tattoo.I'm at sea at the moment so thanks to your rules I'm OK to have my tattoos

Yep, guilty as charged...
Don`t mind a bit of body art actually, but full face tattoos are just scary. Saw a fella in Fleetwood who had his full head like a leopard or something.

I used to have a customer at my last pub who I was extremely suspicious of when I first saw him, but who turned out to be one of the nicest blokes you could meet. His face and body were covered in tattoos, including the usual 'cut here' on his throat. He regretted ever doing all this when he was young and foolish. Wanted to look hard but brought him nothing but trouble. He stayed in the local vicinity as much as possible where he was well known and was looked after by some of the 'lads' if there were any problems. Once I got to know him he was a welcome customer.
The old saying goes never judge a book etc etc etc and this fit him, Peter, admirably.

I dropped a clanger at work, we had some contractors cleaning a plant where graphite was used & I just went in & saw a bloke who at first glance looked like he'd been up a chimney. To which I made a throwaway remark, he said nothing. It was only later & probably with my glasses on I realised the error, but decided not to start digging a bigger hole.
